Vehicle Detail

1933 Plymouth PD 5 window coupe Bone stock example Rumble seat, Freewheeling Excellent mechanical condition Here up for bids on eBay is this desirable 1933 Plymouth rumble seat coupe.  This car benefitted from a very high quality restoration in the 70s, but is now showing some signs of aging.  Recently serviced, It remains in excellent mechanical condition and is ready for the road.  Cosmetically there are some areas that need help, but the overall picture is a pretty good one.  This car is exceptionally solid, with excellent original body panels and undercarriage.  A great starting point to return it to its former glory, or just enjoy it as it is.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car appears to have received a bare metal, nut and bolt restoration, I have seen no signs overspray of tape lines, whomever restored this car did a quality job.  The body is very straight and panel fit is all good.  I have found no filler anywhere on the car, this is a really solid example.  The paint is beginning to display fogging and light crazing in areas, it's possible that some of this could be improved with color sanding.  The Firestone tires are old but have good tread and no sidewall checking. All of the chome on the car is in very nice condition with only minor flaws. Not shown but included with the car is the original jacking equipment, plus a Budge car cover and an original owner's manual from 1933. The worst area on the car is at the right quarter, see the 1st photo below.  Something must have fallen on the car at some time and you can see the various dings, dents and scrapes that resulted.  If you're handy with body and paint you could really bring the car up a notch just by giving this area some attention.   The grill is in great shape with straight fins and a very nice shell.  Foglights are Mopar branded, the one on the right has a cracked lens and needs a new lamp.  Headlights are both in super condition.  The winged mermaid mascot and cloisonne emblem are both in exceptional shape.   The driver's side running board shows some wear.  Headlights and brake lamp function correctly.  Door handles and mirrors both look good with no pitting.  Driver's side window has an small area that's cracked, visible in the 4th photo. All of the car's weatherstripping is in good condition.  Good panel fit throughout.  Both doors close perfectly with a precise "click" - pretty impressive for a 79 year old car. The interior is in good shape, again, presentable but not perfect.  Its biggest flaw are a couple of small burn holes on the seat from a cigarette.  That must have happened years ago because the interior has no bad odors.  There are seatbelts for 2 up front, plus 3 installed for the rumble seat passengers. Nicely woodgrained dash.  Instrument lighting looks great at night.  All of the gauges are working correctly.  This car runs cool and shows great oil pressure readings, about 70lbs at hot idle. The knob above the steering column controls the freewheeling  feature, which works correctly. Clean door panels with very nice hardware.  Windows wind smoothly.  The knob visible in the 2nd photo is for seat adjustment.  Garnish moldings are in excellent condition throughout this interior. This Plymouth runs and drives very well.  After sitting for a number of years the car was recently brought in for a blank check overhaul to ensure that all systems were operating correctly.  The brake system was gone through, including a new (NOS) master cylinder and all new wheel cylinders.  A new water pump was installed, the carburetor was rebuilt and new axle seals were installed.  Finally, all electrical issues were rectified including a complete rebuild of the generator. If you look past the dirt you'll see the incredible fidelity of this undercarriage.  Never hit, never rusted, you can tell that this was a good car to start with. Now in need of some cosmetic TLC, the new owner can drive and enjoy this Plymouth right away, while improving on it as time allows. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
