Vehicle Detail

The nicest, most original example of an extremely rare and desirable last year body style full size Nash. The Nash Kelvinator Company was result of a union between Nash and the Kelvinator appliance company (see the Kelvinator trim influence on the doors). N-K President George Mason was an outspoken supporter of aerodynamics in car design, and the Ambassador is best remembered for its enclosed front wheels. Nash bestowed the Ambassador name on its plushest models. When Nash rolled out its Airflyte body style, they featured fully reclining seats that could turn the car into a vehicle capable of sleeping three adults, earning it the dubious distinction of being the make-out automobile of choice for teenagers coming of age in the 1950s. In an effort to make the Ambassador “the World’s Most Beautiful Car”, the Pininfarina Studio (of Ferrari styling fame and widely considered the Grand Master of automobile styling) to pen the exterior lines and Madame Helene Rother of Paris to style the interiors. The Country Club Coupe was the sportiest body style and in Ambassador trim was the top of the line, most luxurious Nash. Considering that 1954 was the swansong for this design, this particular example is significant and highly desirable. It features a Super Jetfire 7-bearing engine coupled to a 3-speed plus overdrive transmission. The car has only 58,000 miles on it, which is explained by its long (indoor) storage. As mentioned above, this car features dual Airline reclining seats that create twin beds or simply recline for comfortable driving. Some of the other exclusive Nash Ambassador features of this car are the “Road-Guide” fenders for parking and passing; the widest windshield and rear window of any car, Airflyte-built body-and-frame construction, two-tone paint, Solex tinted glass, special leather and needlepoint trim and tailored interior,, continental rear tire mount (with 6th spare in trunk), Electronic clock, Courtesy light, Direction Signals, Duo-Coustic Radio, Pullout Glove Drawer, Clutch Pedal Starting, Cowl-type Fresh Air Intake, One-piece Curved Windshield, Firestone Wide Whitewall Tires, chrome wheels discs, plus an assortment of original advertising literature and owners and shop manuals. This particular car was owned by one family for decades, stored safely away in a parking garage in New York City. When the family estate was settled, the car was carefully brought back to perfect operating condition, with a carb rebuild, a Renuzit gas tank treatment, new fuel lines, and all fluids flushed and changed. It started right up, and runs and drives probably as well as it did in the day, that is to say, beautifully. It shifts smoothly, rides comfortably, stops and steers well, starts on a dime. The car appears to have had one repaint in its life and still shows remarkable well. The interior is original and in outstanding condition for its age; only the carpet was replaced. The floors are solid and a layer of sound-proofing was installed under the new carpet, contributing to the silent, silky-smooth ride. The radio has not been repaired as yet, but probably just needs tubes. A few pieces of the chrome are lightly pitted, but can be easily removed for re-plating. The car is way too nice to restore and, at the advice of experts, more valuable as is due to the excellence of its original condition.
