Vehicle Detail

The Basics: 1980 MG MGB (LE) Limited Edition - Convertible with approximately (55k miles) 1.8L 4 cylinder 5 main B-Series engine. Engine Code 043045 4-Speed Synchronized Manual Transmission - New clutch within last 2K miles. The vehicle has current NC registration & inspection until 8/12 with clear North Carolina title in hand. The vehicle is currently located in the Marietta/Kennesaw, Georgia area (NW Atlanta metro) due to relocation. Vehicle was driven to Georgia from North Carolina and is exercised regularly. Vehicle has always been garaged during ownership until recent relocation. The Rest of the Story: The LE model is one of the final approximately 6500 cars inported into the US. These cars were all prepared similarly by dealers to mark the final batch of imported cars. The early cars typically had tan interiors with some of the later cars having black interiors. Otherwise, the cars were very similar with special dealer installed options and/or accessories (steering wheel, badges, side stripes, luggage rack, etc.). This particular car is an early LE model with a build date of 8/79. I purchased this vehicle in 1999 as a milestone birthday present to myself. Through a great local MG car club and knowledgable mentors, I became a student of this Marque and have been able to maintain the vehicle myself along with the completion of a number of upgrades and modifications to keep the car roadworthy. For anyone with exposure to our club and events will know that this vehicle was active in club events. I am the 3rd Owner of this vehicle which originated out of Virginia before passing through the Raleigh, North Carolina area to my ownership. This vehicle was purchased with approximately 42K miles and has been driven approximately 1K miles a year since for car club activities including attending regional shows and gatherings. Due to significant life changes it is time for me to find this worthy car a new home with a caring Owner who will enjoy as much as I have and hopefully maintain on the road. I no longer have the accomodations and time to keep this car well maintained and hate to see it subjected to constant weather exposure and deminishing use. Modifications and Repairs: When purchased, this vehicle had recently experienced an engine bay fire related to the original Stromberg carberatur that left a paint blister on the hood. The vehicle was converted to a 2-bbl Weber downdraft carb and was driveable when purchased. Due to problems in meeting emissions testing requirements in my area, the vehicle was converted to a twin SU carb setup with functioning emissions equipment. Due to the conversion components used, the emissions setup is a hybrid system of early and late 70s components but is fully functional and maintains the majority of period correct emissions components for this year model. The setup has been augmented with components from the 73/74 model year setup and tuned per that model specs for timing, etc. I no longer run the air pump via belt due to vehicle no longer having to meet local emissions testing. The vehicle does run well with good power range. The following is a partial laundry list of additional service and/or modifications made during ownership: New steering rack gaitors and steering rack adjustment New tie rod ends New steering column universal joint New fuse block New engine bay hoses and seals New radiator, colling fan motors & blades New thermostat and bypass sleeve Relatively new front headlamps Aftermarket aluminum valve cover and gasket Conversion to late 80 model year stock electronic ignition/distributor New heater valve New Alternator New SU Fuel Pump 2 to 1 stock MGB exhaust downtube feeding aftermarket Monza exhaust system New upgraded intake/exhaust manifold gasket Coated stock exhaust manifold to control heat Twin SU carbs from 74 MGB model year with new heat shield and K&N tapered conical filters for clearance Manual choke setup Rebuilt emissions twin carbon canisters New (rebuilt) front shocks Rebuilt front suspsension and braking system with urethane bushings all around New clutch/pressure plate within last 2K miles. Transmission front and rear seals replaced when clutch replaced New clutch slave cylinder New brake master cylinder Rebuilt rear suspension with urethane bushings all around and replacement stock rear leaf springs. Moss lowering block kit installed to improve stance. Rear tube shock conversion installed Rebuilt driveshaft New replacement seat tracks and seat webbings Mesh windscreen currently installed behind seats (Moss aftermarket accessory) Battery cut-off switch installed Relatively new Optima battery installed Rebuilt center console with new armrest cover and hardware Period correct AM/FM 8-track radio installed. Aftermarket radio antenna installed Aftermarket speakers installed (in vehicle when purchased) Aftermarket outside mirrors installed (on vehicle when purchased) Replica "Libre" style aluminum rims (powder coated with polished edges) with Falcon Zeix low profile tires of moderate age and mileage. (This combination helps with traction and weight but does provide a stiffer ride than stock with slightly heavier steering) Tires offer excellent traction when heated. This rim style was used extensively on Datsun competition cars during the 70s. (Sorry, I no longer have the original LE rims for this vehicle) The vehicle has a matching spare rim/tire combination due to required use of unique lug nuts for this rim type. Carpet type logo spare tire cover included All gauges, lighting and electrical system components work. The stock in-dash clock works but is not able to be reset for time due to broken adjuster wheel. Future Projects: The dash pad does have the typical split in the dash pad cover over the air grilles. The vinyl convertible top does have one growing rip in the vinyl above the driver corner rear corner view panel as seen in the photos. This rip cannot be easily patched due to location and stress on material. As far as I know, this is the original top and is due for a replacement. The top has only been used regularly in the past year or so. Prior weather protection was from a full tonneau cover that comes with vehicle. The vehicle did come to me with a black carpet kit installed in the boot. There are 2 know oil leaks that need attending to. One is from a broken oil pan bolt at the front of the engine and will require engine lifting and/or removal to correct. Minor leak while under pressure during driving. Does not drip on pavement. Second is from engine side cover seals below intake/exhaust manifold. Will require intake/exhaust manifold removal to replace side cover seals. Minor leak while under pressure during driving. The paint is believed to be original and does chalk with weather exposure. Paint finish does restore well with a minor compound buff and good wax application. The interior is also believed to be original. I have always used the full fabric seat covers to help preserve the original seat material. No known rips or tears in the seat covers. This vehicle is a solid driver and I would not hesitate to drive most anywhere. It has served as my daily driver for the last 2 months and easily held its own in Atlanta metro area traffic. It is a perfect candidate for a rolling restoration to maintain as a driver or as an advanced starting point for a full restoration. Please review the images closely for a good representation of the condition of this vehicle. I will pass along a number of maintenance and repair manuals with the vehicle.
