Vehicle Detail
1979 Porsche 930 Turbo... Mint and Unmolested! My description is going to be a little long but those of you who are actually interested I suspect will appreciate it. Considered by many the most desirable year for the 930 Turbo. The last year the 930 was available in the U.S. This model was outlawed in the U.S. until 1986 when it was brought back a little heavier, a little slower and with the new pollution control requirements etc.Not to mention power seats and some other "Gucci" B.S. This year of the 930 is the most "Beast like" and radical of them all! Get in this car and it will feel like the fastest car you ever sat in. A little turbo lag and Holy #!%> what a pile of fun. This is the year that everyone wanted one. This is the year the poster was made, selling for tens of thousands of dollars over the dealer list price of $50k. The real reason why they were outlawed was too many rich kids and Hollywood people were killing themselves in this ridiculously fast car. Any 930 sold in the U.S. between the years 1980 to ‘85 is grey market. Who knows who did all the work to legalize it for the U.S. market. Be careful and understand they are worth far less and of no interest to the collector. The 1979, 930 was the fastest, the most radical of any year and was as close as you could get to the track version. Entirely uncivilized and crazy fast. In fact, it was the fastest production car on the planet when it was made and for many years after. Zero to sixty in under five seconds was ridiculous in 1979 and of course the most iconic super car of the era with beauty to match it’s performance. Ferrari, Lambourgini, Aston Martin, you name it, nothing could touch it. Off the line, top speed or on the track this car ruled and for the un-initiated this was also the era of Porsche reliability. The most bullet proof and reliable super car still available today. As reliable as your Toyota Corrola. Cost of ownership is extremely low and as an antique if you keep the mileage under 5K your full coverage insurance is around $275. (American Collectors Insurance). This particular 930 is the best one you have ever seen. Further to that, I am the guy you want to buy your 34 year old Porsche from. I am one of those anal perfectionists, just like the guy before me, and that why this incredible car has remained perfectly intact. Even the OEM Cassette Stereo, though it works perfectly it is amazing nobody went to "upgrade it’ shows you the type of care this car has received. Not put back to factory stock but it has always been that way. This car has seen nothing but respect and understanding from a few men that know better than to "F" with it. Get out your Q-tips and she should win any show you enter. The most sought after and timeless color combination of silver on black, never out of style and thank God not Guards Red! (How could Porsche repeat such an ugly color of red for so long?) But then again Porsche did some weird stuff. The most complicated factory heat and A.C. system you will ever know. It works perfectly but I still have to pay attention to all the controls to get it right. I suppose that is one of the reasons why I love Porsche so much! Maintained and cared for so obsessively I can only imagine how the wives of the few men who cared for this automobile hated it. It garnered more attention than they did. For example, right from day one, aftermarket floor mats cover the originals which preserved them as new, they look like the day they were made and they are not replacements. Sheepskin seat covers have preserved the seats which are remarkably perfect, without the shoe polish and usual BS you often find (after you bought it and your jeans turn black). This car is original and unmolested in every way. I am not even going to say things like "no rust", assume perfection. I know you have heard that before but you have to see it to believe it. Even the factory cassette storage rack is in the console (pops out to make room for whatever). Owned by a Pilot for the first 20 something years of it’s life. I thought I was obsessive but this guy was nuts (just the way you want him to be). I have all the maintenance records (stacks of them) including the Pilot’s log book, page after page where he recorded every detail of his obsessive relationship with this car for more than 20 years. This guy talks about different oils, logs the brand and the weight, the date etc. It reads like a diary, when and where he did anything is recorded in this book. This 930 has had a couple of owners since who have kept the obsession alive. She has not been put back to stock, it has always been there. No BBS wheels or Sub-woofers, no "up-grades" to the engine. No A-hole has ever owned this car, or has dis-respected it! Not only has it been stored properly, but also out of the light. The dash is perfect and original, no warps, the headliner too is like new as is the carpet and the dash. Sit in this car and it looks and feels like new but without having been renovated. Nothing looks tired, there is little evidence of its age. All the factory options are on this car including the Hela H-4 headlight upgrade, (the brightest high beam I have ever seen) as well as the rare at the time upgrade to the polished Fuchs, which by the way are perfect (not a scratch perfect paint) and guaranteed original to the car. Eight out of ten Fuch’s you see on 930's are not original, not forged, not polished. Easy to spot for those that know. I can’t remember the last time I saw a 930 with original polished Fuch’s on line. At the time the polished wheels were rare as everyone wanted the new blacked out look, not the polished alloy look of the early 911's. Yes you have to polish them, no clear coat no shortcuts. A time consuming yet satisfying project for a couple hours every spring. Unless described otherwise consider the overall condition of this 930 to be to the same high standard of condition as everything thus far described. The previous owner had a mishap in his garage that required the drivers side door to be re-painted, but like everything else it was done beautifully. You can not tell unless you are told as the previous owner disclosed to me. Third gear has that little crunch if you speed shift like they all do, not really a condition issue. I mention it only for those who are not aware that it is expected and found on all 930's of this era. The required puff of blue on start-up and yes a few drops of oil on the mat after a workout. It just wouldn’t be right without them. The previous owner had a new clutch installed and there is a little flutter at a certain point in the pedal. I never bothered to look into it as I quickly got used to it. The A.C. system I had overhauled after the forward condenser had a melt down. I decided to overhaul the whole system but was careful to have the original compressor re-built by a specialist in Florida at a cost higher than replacement. Every nut ,bolt or part of any kind is to the best of my knowledge 1979 OEM. The forward and rear condensers were upgraded to modern day specs and make a big improvement to the cooling. They are out of sight and don’t count at Concourse events so I thought this was a reasonable and practical upgrade from factory stock. All else is entirely correct for the year. Every and all functions and features work perfectly. You name it, the clock, everything! There is nothing to be attended to...anywhere. The usual and expected minor hood chips are there , she wears them with honor (it would be suspicious if they weren’t there) but even they are surprisingly few, as if it was never driven too close behind anything . The tires are at 75% B.F. Goodrich racing Potenzas. All the glass is original and the rubber seals are like new and as far as I know original. The electric windows can be a bit slow on colder days but nothing that will bother you. The sun-roof is perfect and fast with the original back up hand crank still in the glove compartment. The complete and original tool bag, air compressor, original spare, the rarely found plastic envelope with plastic tarp, gloves etc. manuals and a box full of 30 + years of maintenance records are all included. There is nothing tired, worn, or not disclosed .It’s a 34 year old UN-RESTORED all original car that is ready for the "Concourse de Elegance". I have seen a lot of 930's, most of them much newer than this one, many with lower miles, but somehow look tired compared to this one. I have never seen a better example than this 930! Though I am trying it is difficult to explain how good this car is. My local chapter of The Porsche Club of America knows full well this car. If you know someone give them a call. This car has been chosen 3 out of the 4 years that I have owned her to be the lead car on our local tours and annual 140 plus mile spirited rides through New England. I never entered her in any show as that is not my thing. Now the next owner if he wishes can bring her fresh onto the judging scene. The only gap in the maintenance records is the owner before last who apparently had the engine disassembled and rebuilt. He is the only guy in the short lineage of this car I worry about (2 years). Who spends that kind of dough, does it perfectly but does not preserve or forward the records? My mechanic says there is evidence of the work but I have no paperwork. For this kind of money I fully expect and welcome your inspection. Please send your agent or come yourself. Nothing beats up close and personal. No mechanical issues... None. My local mechanic is one of those grouchy Guru Porsche guys who lives and breaths Porsche. Speak to him. I have never known him to love a car until he got to know this one. She will sell to the highest bidder, down to the final second! It is for sale locally only until a bid is made at which point I will remove her from sale locally. You can rely on me and the auction process. A promise, or should I say gentleman’s agreement is entered into with your bid. No molestation, no stereos, no "I can make it faster", no wheels, no pipes, this car is in such rare original condition you will kill the value and forever be remorsefull if you mess with anything! I know it’s easy to double the HP on these cars, but find another one if that is your plan. I do not need to sell her but do so only because I am moving and can no longer provide the ideal environment in which to house her. But if the right buyer doesn’t step up I will. You have probably figured out by now I love this car! I don’t give her up easily. I have driven her regularly over the last 4 years and put about 1400 miles a year on I purchased her with 58,000 miles. Stored in a garage with a cover and one of those blow up bubbles with a fan to further protect her. "Porsche In A Bubble" as my friends like to tease me. She is number 31of 1200 built in 1979, a very desirable early production number. Found in Oklahoma and brought to Cape Cod Massachusetts. Always stored properly for winter. Who drives a Porsche in the winter? Never taken out even with a hint of rain in the sky, (got caught once though). I guarantee all numbers, all everything to match. I guarantee my statements and promise you have had full disclosure. Again, please send your agent if you can not come yourself, I can make arrangements for accommodations and would look forward to showing her off. The reserve and opening bid to take her off the market locally is $35,000 just to get the bids going. Again, it is not about the money as much as it is about who is worthy to have her. I keep an eye on the on-line scene and can honestly say there has never been a better early 930 offered that I have ever seen. I hope you sense my passion by now. Can’t stop talking about her as if I need to find a way to feel ok about giving up something that is very special to me. I have been as obsessive about this 930 as I have been about writing this ad. If after mutual inspection you don’t want this car, fine with me, pay the E-bay fee’s and walk away. If it was my error or my decision I will pay the fee’s. You are going to have to give up some cash (refundable) up front, so I know your not a flake, $5000 at closing of the auction. I would be happy to answer any serious inquireries directly. Just email and I will provide my cell phone number. Please talk to me if you have questions. I love to talk about my car if you haven’t yet noticed. The mileage quoted may vary slightly as at very least I will have to say goodby properly! My daughter and I will be taking her out for a final spin on your dime. There are only a few of you out there that fully understand this car and how rare it is. Feel free to comment so that I may post your observations in the listing. It has also been recognized that the early 930 is the most undervalued and up and coming of all Porsche’s regardless of year. The1979 Porsche, depending on your point of view is one of the best cars they ever made. Recognized now as one of the best investments in the affordable super car world. Nothing faster, nothing more reliable and certainly nothing as beautiful to the knowing and unknowing eye as the 930. Clear title, and good to go. On Apr-06-12 at 09:46:17 PDT, seller added the following information: Though the exhaust and air filter system are original to the car I should disclose that at one point in it's history for a short time it did have a performance exhaust and K&N filter system installed. On Apr-07-12 at 09:51:03 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had a number of interested buyers inquire about making an offer to purchase the car prior to the auction end. However tempting that may be, you can rely on my statement in the listing. It will sell to the highest bidder down to the final second. Good Luck On Apr-07-12 at 10:55:33 PDT, seller added the following information: Having done some further investigation with the cars history I was able to determine that she was not re-built but rather disassembled and re-sealed. Which makes a lot more sense as these engines are so bullet proof it is usually around 125000K before you might think of a re-build. Sorry about the mis information. I am very proud of this car and want to make sure all is disclosed to the successful buyer.
