Vehicle Detail

1972 Volvo P1800E 1-owner Oregon car from new Original, unmodified example Great choice for a Practical Classic Here up for bids on eBay is this very original 1972 Volvo P1800E.  This car was bought new in Springfield, Oregon and has been in the care of one owner since new.  Always garaged, the car is well preserved and completely solid.   The paint is mostly original and shows some areas of fading.   When I bought this car I intended to have it repainted but later reconsidered in light of its originality, so I'll leave this decision to the new owner.   In spite of its paint flaws the car still presents well, showing a patina that reflects its 40 years of age.  The body on this Volvo is rock solid, with no rust issues anywhere, a classic Oregon survivor car.   Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page.   The only paintwork that I've found on the car is on the passenger side rear quarter, the original owner explained to me that this was due to a parking lot mishap where the quarter got scraped.  I've inspected the inside of this panel and have seen no body damage at all, assuring that the mishap was indeed superficial.  The body panels are very straight throughout the car with the only real dings showing up on the side trim strips.  Panel fit is good, the doors hood and trunk lid all close precisely.  Tires are matching Yokohamas with good tread. All of the chrome of the car is in good original condition with no pitting.  The passenger side headlight surround shows some tarnishing, otherwise all of the chrome on the car looks very good. All of the glass is original, including the windshield, all of it in good shape.  The car has areas of paint fading and rub-through on the hood, roof and trunk lid. Volvo marketed the P1800 as a Frua designed car, later acknowledging that it was actually penned by Pelle Petterson.  His design has held up well over the years, with distinctive lines that have now become iconic. Here's a photo of the inside of the rear quarter panel, I removed the cardboard liner to inspect this area, it shows no damage.  The trunk compartment is all original including the weatherstripping.   All of the car's weatherstripping is original, all of it still pliable and in good shape. The interior is very well preserved, a testament to the car's garaged history.  The only element showing wear are the leather seats, which have taken on a well earned patina.  These could easily be re-dyed by any competent upholsterer, although to me they resemble that leather chair at home you settle into with a glass of scotch, and a cigar.  Perhaps some things are best left the way they are.  All of the carpet in the car is original and very well preserved with no areas of wear of fading.  The steering wheel is perfect with no cracks. The center console is mint with no cracks or damage.  Back seat area is very nice, rear parcel shelf carpet shows no fading thanks to Oregon's mild climate and mostly cloudy skies. All gauges are working, including the clock.  Lights, signals, wipers, horn - all working, no gremlins to chase down in this car.  Both upper and lower dash pads are excellent with no splits or shrinkage.  Usually you see one or two right behind the steering wheel, none on this car.  The car has not been smoked in, the interior still smells like leather.  An Alpine cassette has been added, the original Volvo (Bendix) radio is included. Nice door panels with no wear.  Windows wind smoothly, all locks work.   Underdash area is clean and original.  The headliner and sunvisors are in terrific condition. The car comes with the original manuals, partial tool kit, and original radio.  All of the warrantly booklet maintenance entries are checked off, the work was all done according to schedule by the owner himself, back when you could do that sort of thing with your new car. The motor fires to life easily and runs very well.  It has the correct fast idle on startup, doesn't smoke, makes good power, shifts great and brakes well.  The overdrive engages as it should, making freeway driving a breeze.  The car rides down the road straight and true with the feeling of quality that Volvo is known for. The car has been recently serviced and tuned, along with fresh fluids in the transmission and differential.  The motor oil carries a ZDDP additive, something ALL old cars definitely need in light of EPA restrictions on this additive in off-the-shelf motor oil.  Read more at www.zddplus.com The undercarriage is dry and rust free, showing perfect pans and rockers.  These Volvos were heavily undercoated, the last 2 photos show where the undercoating has worn away in the front wheelwells.  The bare steel underneath gives you a glimpse of this car's integrity, an Oregon survivor, garaged from day one.
