Vehicle Detail
For Sale: 1999 Chevy Cavalier Dual-Fuel Vehicle. I purchased this car several years ago from the state of California with the intentions of installing a natural gas pump at my home. The pump company went bankrupt and I changed my plans. The closest CNG fueling station is ten miles from my home. I would fill up with natural gas when ever I was driving close to the station but I found my self often going out of my way to get CNG. I have four vehicles and the Chevy has to go. When I purchased the car the passenger-side fender and door were damaged. I re-painted a used fender and installed it. The door damage has not been repaired. (See photo.) Other than the serpentine drive-belt breaking, which I replaced, I haven't had any problems with the car. The car does start better on gasoline than it does on CNG, however it has always started. (I read on a CNG users post where someone installed a switch so that he could start the car on gasoline and then switch it over to CNG for driving.) Seemed like a fairly easy project. The expiration date for the CNG tank is 2014. It holds the equivalence of about 5 gallons of gasoline. This car will always run on natural gas unless you manually switch it over to gasoline by pressing a rocker switch on the dash board. If the natural gas tank is empty, or the car fails to start on natural gas it will switch over to gasoline. There is natural gas currently in the CNG tank and it will start and run on CNG. The car is a basic government vehicle. No power windows, locks, heated seats, CD player or what have you. The Air Conditioner works great. Of course a vehicle this age and with this many miles does have some issues. They are: ABS light for the brakes is on. The brakes work fine without ABS so I haven't even looked at what the problem might be. There's a six-inch long crack in the dashboard near the windshield. As mentioned the passenger-side door has a small dent. (I have paint that matches the fender that I'll include with the car.) When the car is set to run on gasoline, the fuel-gauge won't register below 1/2 a tank. I try to keep the gasoline tank full but since I am almost always running on CNG it hasn't been a problem. (The gauge works fine when running on CNG.) There's a few nicks and scratches on the body. Nothing major. The car shakes a little when driving. It seems to happen at lower speeds. It really isn't that bad. Just wanted to mention it. I would rate the tires at 50%. If you know much about natural gas vehicles, you probably know the engines will usually last a long time because they burn so cleanly. I recently saw a CNG Crown Victoria with over 900,000 miles selling on ebay. Since I have so many vehicles and I don't want to pay the current insurance and registration fees, the car is currently registered as "non-op". With gasoline prices going up I'm probably going to regret getting rid of this car. Hopefully someone out there will appreciate it. bgaup
