Vehicle Detail
A very nice 1998 Mercedes Benz S420. I flew to Florida to buy this about a year ago and drove it back to Pennsylvania without any problems. It had a bunch of annoying cosmetic problems, most of which I have fixed. Examples are: I replaced both exterior mirrors and the interior rear-view mirror. I don't remember what I wired up and what I didn't. I do know the outside mirrors need to be wired up, because I never had the time for that. I have a brand new front bumper which is still in the box, and never had the time to play with that either. A couple of the windows had mechanical issues, so I replaced the entire motor/gear units and properly lubricated the sliding mechanisms. I installed new vanity mirrors and lights here and there where the old ones either looked bad or didn't work properly. I have a replacement steering wheel for it, but again, never had the time to play with it. The original steering wheel was not covered while being driven, so I think it looks like hell. Someone apparently replaced the rear window, but never installed the exterior trim... so I bought the trim but never put that on either. The plastic trim around the inside of the sun roof was ugly, but I never had a chance to get a replacement for that. It also has a brand new headlight switch. I'm sure there's more, but I cannot recall all of what I did or bought for it. I bought this more as a toy but then got a little too caught up in some big projects that were more of a priority. Ultimately, at this price I am losing lots of money on this car. The bumper alone was a few hundred. Each of the replacement mirrors were over a hundred, as with the internal mirror. I've spent over $1500 just on parts and upgrades for it. Not a bad deal for you. When I applied for the title, I had to go in to the DMV in Queens for an interview (because I applied for a NY title). Unbeknownst to me, this thing had apparently been reported stolen at some point in the past, which might explain the back window being replaced and the reason I had to replace the mirrors. So, they did some sort of history check on the car, told me it had been reported stolen at some point, and then reassigned a new VIN number for it. Hence the strange short VIN number it now has. It has a New York title by the way, not that this matters in any way. It has some small spots of rust near the sunroof, but not many. I put some grease on them a year ago to stop the rust, which worked well. Some touch up paint might have worked just fine, but I had visions of repainting the whole car. Of course, no time. What else... I seem to remember replacing the MAF to resolve some strange problem, which it did. Other than that, mechanically it worked great for me. By the way, I have the service manual on DVD, which I will give to you. If you have some other questions, please feel free to ask. I will go take some photos now and then come back and post them. Thank you. OK- the ebay system will not allow the current VIN to be used, clearly because of its length. The ACTUAL VIN today is: NY69696. There is a new New York DMV sticker which reflects this. It still has the old Florida stickers on the door jam also. The VIN undoubtedly shown somewhere on this page is the old VIN, which I would assume to be the original VIN. I just went to look over the car and noticed that the sunroof stopped working. No idea what's up with that, but I've seen entire replacement units on ebay for around $250-$300. I was intending to replace the whole unit anyway, because of the missing trim on the existing unit. Maybe you might want to do the same. I have lowered the asking price accordingly. Also, I forgot to mention that I installed a whole new interior map light assembly, and replaced the incandescent bulbs with the much nicer LED lights. The front blinkers are also brand new. Also, there is a center storage console on the rear dash that was ugly, so I replaced that also. There are a few indicator lights currently illuminated. Two for low fuel, one for washer fluid, one looks to indicate a bad sensor on the coolant (because it is full), and the last is the SRS light. I am led to believe that might be indicative of a seat belt switch or air bag sensor. No airbags have been deployed by the way. I did drive it just not, and it still runs just fine. Oh, I also bought new brake pads but - as you might have already guessed - never had the time to replace them. I don't even know that it needs them. I just liked to buy things for it. (Wife not happy) Tires are good, by the way. I do have the passenger seat control switch panel that is not shown in one of the interior photos. HERE IS A VIDEO OF THE ENGINE RUNNING Anyone interested in a 2002 Ford E-350 bus with a working handicapped lift? It runs great. I only used it for one job, and its been sitting ever since.
