Vehicle Detail
1986 Jaguar XJS 3.6 70K original miles Rare factory 5 speed Excellent example Here up for bids on eBay is this sharp 1986 Jaguar XJS. This car was imported to the US by InterCorp Europe in 1986 and delivered to a customer in the Seattle area. Always garaged, the car is a good of example of the benefits that come from Pride of Ownership. With just 70K original miles, the car is very well preserved and is an excellent performer on the road. As you know, what sets this XJ apart is the Getrag manual transmission. 5 speeds were not available for the US market and it was worth it for the original owner to jump through the regulatory hoops to bring this car in legally. The 5 speed really transforms this car, fulfilling the promise of its original design as a sporting 2+2 coupe. Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page. The paint on this Jaguar is mostly original, the exception being the hood. I suspect it was repainted due to rock chips, as I have seen no evidence of damage underneath or anywhere on the nose. The original paint shows some age related flaws here and there but for the most part looks pretty good. Expect to find a few door dings, some touched in chips and some discoloration to the factory applied beltline sticker. The car does make a strong impression but after 25 years it's not perfect. For a silver, it has a very fine metallic flake, almost imperceptible, which makes the car sometimes appear as a true gray instead of silver, it's very unique. Having original paint means you don't have to be concerned with overspray, sloppy tape work or poor prep - what you see it what you get and this car has no stories to tell. The body on this Jag is very impressive, having zero rust issues, you can tell right away that it's a west coast car that has been garaged. The sought after Pepperpot wheels are in excellent, unmarked condition. Tires are a matched set of Michelin MXV4's. Malcolm Sayer's design has withstood the test of time, this car looks great from any angle. The door jamb contains the data plates relating to the car's importation. The speedometer was changed on June 30th, 1986 from kmh to mph, and unlike some imported cars, the mileage reading at the switch was only 81 kilometers ( 50 miles), assuring that this is indeed a low mile car. All of the glass on the car are original Triplex pieces and they are all in excellent condition, with no scratches, chips or hard water marks - just crystal clear throughout. The interior is all original and in terrific condition. The leather seating has taken on a nice patina with no rips or cracks. The carpet is in great shape and all of the weatherstripping is still like new. The car is water tight in the rain. All of the electrical components in this car are working correctly. Horn, wipers, rear defrost, lights, signals, trip computer - all working. The power windows work well and the car has remote locking and an alarm. The climate control works at all settings but I can't vouch for the state of the AC this time of year. The radio works but the power antenna doesn't, limiting signal strength. The wood trim in this car is like new with no clouding or cracking in the varnish, really in terrific condition. All of the gauges operate correctly and show good readings. All warning lights work. All interior lighting works. The dash pad is free of cracks or splits. Both door panels are in great shape. The trunk contains the original spare and jacking equipment. The 3.6L inline 6 combined with the Getrag transmission produced a weight savings that brought performance levels on par with its 12 cylinder siblings, a fair trade if you ask me. This motor fires to life instantly and runs excellent. The car runs cools, brakes well, and shifts smootly in and out of all gears. This is a super road car, cruising 60mph in 5th gear at 2000rpm. It's also at home on back roads, with a suspension that's absolutely neutral when cornering, I can tell you that the handling characteristics of this car are grin inducing! The car's AC system has been converted to R-134. This undercarriage is rust free, showing no signs of accident damage or repair. Perfect pans and rockers, original factory exhaust, really just the way you want to find them. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
