Vehicle Detail
1971 BMW 2002 This car is a 1971 BMW 2002, VIN 2572582, manufactured on April 21, 1971; delivered on May 4, 1971 to the US-importer Hoffman Motor Corp. in New York. HISTORY I bought this 4 speed, sunroof, BMW 2002, (after it was donated to a church auction by its original owner, George C. Reinmiller), on January 12, 2003. It had been cared for and kept garaged in Portland, Oregon. There was no rust from the sunroof. The only rust was on each door toward the rear, where almost all of these cars will collect water, even from washing, and some rust on the front lower panel, and a minor amount in the spare tire well. All this was repaired during the restoration process, which included changing the color from Sahara to Verona. You can view pictures of the restoration by going here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/indiandale/sets/72157603029691084/ The paint shines like it was painted yesterday. FEATURES Everything works on this car. With a lot of help from the various members of bmw2002faq.com and Chris and Danuel at Skip's Foreign Car Repair in Conway, Arkansas, this car is in great driving condition. It was voted Car Of The Month in February 2010 by members of bmw2002faq.com. The engine had a new short block #5473598 installed by the previous owner and has a Weber 38 with electric choke and modified stock breather, and Petronix ignition (starts right up without fail). The head was recently rebuilt and a 282 cam replaced the original cam (idles great and really does help). A tii header was installed at the same time. Redline fluids are being used in the Metric Mechanics 4-speed tranny, (which shifts beautifully) and quiet differential. The car DOES NOT have air conditioning! The interior is original vinyl (drivers side is new World Upholstery cover) re-sprayed with SEM camel dye. Since the headliner is original, it does have some areas that show minimal wear and tear. The dealer installed original AM/FM radio has a tape player and even the clock in the radio works. The manual for the radio is in the glove box. Two Sony X-plod speakers are in the rear shelf. The sunroof has new cables and works as it should. The drivers seat is "heated" and has high and low settings. The typical crack in the dash was professionally repaired by Vinyl Doctor. I also removed the knee trim and front side marker reflectors and added euro flush turn signals. It has a maplight rear view mirror, and door side pockets. The spaghetti seat belts were replaced with new retractable "bluedevils" belts. I also replaced the gauge cluster with the silver dollar gauges and added XM radio. CONDITION The odometer reading is NOT accurate. My estimate of miles is that the odometer has rolled over. However, this 1971 BMW 2002 has always proved to be very dependable, attending multiple car shows and drives yearly. You can see a video of the car by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvEH70dmOG0 The car will smoke on deceleration during heavy driving as can be seen in the video. However, until it gives up the ghost, I'm doing nothing to it. Just add a quart of oil after spirited driving of the NW Arkansas twisties. Though I cannot offer a guarantee, I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere. (The longest trips were a continuous 9 hour trip to New Orleans for Cruisin' the Coast, and a 7 hour trip to Nashville, Tennessee.) If you like, I'm happy to provide pickup from the Little Rock or Hot Springs, Arkansas airport.
