Hot Red Hot Rod: 1936 Chevrolet Pickup Pickups and hot rods are quintessential American modes of transportation. Combine the two and you have a sure-fire crowd pleaser. Old pickup trucks with modern drive trains have long been accepted by serious collectors. Even at glitzy auctions like the Barrett-Jackson spectacle, you'll find your fair share of updated and "massaged" pick-em-ups selling to enthusiastic bidders. A V8-powered pre-war truck is light and nimble -- really the funnest little hauler imaginable! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) To build a pickup like the one shown here is not an easy task, though. First, you have to find a pre-war PU that's in good condition. Then, you have to restore it, and after that, you'll be installing enough modern bits to actually make it safe and fast enough for use on today's busy highways. Count on having to spend a bundle of cash on such a project. A much better idea is to find a truck that was built by someone else, and buy it for pennies on the dollar. Just make sure you find a good one, one that has been fully sorted. Here's such a truck! Just 60,546 commercial 1/2-ton "cab & box" trucks were made for the model year, and there are not too many clean, rust free survivors to begin with. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This particular example didn't need much body work or rust repair. After some smoothing and careful prep, a glossy coat of Fire Engine Red was applied to the essentially stock coachwork, many moons ago. Paint has a few little imperfections, such as small, touched up rock chips, but still looks exceedingly nice. There are no rust bubbles, dings, scratches, or dents. As the truck was used as a shop hauler for the owner of a Central Valley chain of lube stations, the company logo was painted on the doors. We like it, but it could easily be removed and buffed out. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A set of expensive CENTER LINE billet wheels was installed, wrapped in COOPER Cobra radial rubber of the sizes 215/60-15 and 255/60-15, respectively. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Engine compartment looks very clean. A 1968-vintage Chevy 327 cubic inch mouse motor--producing about twice the horsepower of the original stovebolt six unit--was carefully installed, backed by a TH350 auto trans. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The engine starts instantly and runs perfect, with a whisper quiet idle. Apart from the polished M/T alloy valve covers, the polished, vintage intake manifold , and the EDELBROCK 4-barrel carb with chrome air cleaner, it appears basically stock. Heads are the desirable camel hump units. the truck also received a dual master cylinder power brake safety upgrade. A power steering system was installed, the stock front end configuration was retained. No ugly coil overs on this baby! Custom radiatior features electric fan; there are absolutely no overheating worries. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's look inside now. Interior is very cozy. Former owner had a large collection of Show Rods and he seems to have had a professional upholsterer in his employ. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash features full set of black-on-white DOLPHIN gauges; apart from the voltmeter, they all work perfectly. Leather-clad GRANT steering wheel is mounted on a tilt Chevy column. All lights and switches work, and the heater does, too! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Late model chairs have been expertly clad in bone-colored leatherette. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Excellent burlap fabric headliner, custom overhead storage. There's a nice Clarion stereo system installed. Check out the smooth tailgate and California blue-and-gold license plate. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Another highlight of this truck is its beautifully finished bed. Hand-picked birch wood slats were installed with stainless and alloy hardware and covered in many coats of clear varnish, then polised to a high luster. Bed has never seen any abuse, looks super clean. Undercarriage is as clean and dry as you'd wish for. This life-long California pickup has never suffered from rust attacks. Frame rails are straight. Note dual exhaust and 10-inch Chevy rear end. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) For those used to driving stock pre-WWII trucks, chauffeuring this upgraded Chevy is a revelation. Power steering and brakes make such a difference! This pickup handles as good as it looks, and there's plenty of power to boot. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Thanks to good sound insulation and careful assembly, the '36 is not another rattle trap. It's a comfortable, quiet ride. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Freeway speed, no problem. check out the beautiful instruments. The indicated mileage on the odometer--1,204 miles--is the total mileage the truck covered since it was restored. It's fun to drive, doesn't display any bad manners, and can be used as a daily driver in modern day traffic. Around town, everyone we encountered waved and smiled at the classy (and cute) looking truck. It's a great conversation starter! This one's ready to be enjoyed; it's pining for another 76 years of faithful service and will outlast most other vehicles on the road today.
