Vehicle Detail

1973 Triumph TR6 CF/4540-U Body # 4606-CF Engine # CF/4648-UE British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate # 2011/22965 Build date: 12 January 1973 Ship date: 9 February 1973 via Navyard Wharf, Harwich aboard the vessel “Madam Butterfly” to British Leyland Motors, Inc., Jacksonville, Florida I acquired this remarkable TR6 about 18 months ago from the widow of a fellow who spent about $28,000 (receipts available) in restoration expenses between 2006-2009. The car was repainted prior to that owner’s acquisition in the original Carmine color. While the exterior had been resprayed, the interior and mechanics were more or less original up to about 2006. The prior owner, who unfortunately died prematurely, then embarked on a complete mechanical and interior restoration which was accomplished at Specialty Sports Cars, Inc., in Columbus, Ohio. The engine, transmission, and differential were removed and completely disassembled and rebuilt with new parts. During this period, the car was sent out to have the engine bay and frame repainted. This work was done at an odometer reading of 59,XXX and the car currently has approximately 61,600 miles. While I can’t confirm that the mileage is accurate, I believe it to be so. In addition to the complete rebuild of the engine and drivetrain, all collateral equipment such as the radiator, alternator, battery, water pump, fuel pump, and carburetors were renewed or rebuilt. The suspension and steering were also rebuilt, including the steering rack, tie rods, engine and transmission mounts. The brakes and related hydraulics were overhauled, as were the clutch master and slave cylinders. A tube shock conversion kit was installed, along with new front and rear springs and all bushings. Any and all mechanical parts were either renewed (in most cases) or rebuilt (in a few cases) rendering this car essentially as good as new in terms of mechanical condition. The tires are the original style 185R14 Michelin Red Lines with about 3,000 miles of wear. There is about 2,500 miles of wear on the car since this work was completed. The black interior was completed redone: seats, carpet, door trim, etc. The only part not renewed was the wooden dash which is original. The black convertible top is new, and there is a full toneau cover and a boot cover. Three-point seat belts with retractable harness were added. Copies of the receipts detailing all work are available to serious buyers In summary, the mechanical and interior restoration of this car was accomplished without sparing any expense, and it will be a reliable and fun classic British sports car for the next owner. I reluctantly part with this car in order to make room for a recent acquisition, a 1935 Ford coupe with a concours restoration. On Feb-02-12 at 06:42:23 PST, seller added the following information:Any buyer who decides not to purchase this car upon personal inspection will be released from contract less $250 listing fee.On Feb-03-12 at 19:05:28 PST, seller added the following information: Notice the red warning light between the tach and speedo .. the shop that did the mechanical restoration wired this light to the oil pressure system so that if you have an oil pressure failure, this light will illuminate and be easily noticed. The original system had no "warning" of oil system failure, other than a "0" reading on the oil pressure gauge which is not something you're looking at normally. Nice upgrade. On Feb-04-12 at 05:13:45 PST, seller added the following information: Typical of the mechanical restoration work accomplished (this was done about 3000 miles ago): Install a tube shock absorber conversion kit on the rear suspension, remove/refit the fuel tank to gain access, replace front shock absorbers, replace the front and rear springs and collars, replace upper ball joints, upper and lower control bushings, swaybar mounts and bushings, and lower trunnions and trunnion bushings in the front suspension, replace the front brake pads and rotors and clean and repack the front hub bearings and replace the grease seals ($1,190 - Specialty Sports Cars, 620 Oak Street, Columbus, OH) This is $1,190 of the $28,000 in receipts that I have for the (primarily) mechanical restoration. You can see the level of restoration sought by the previous owner. This is quite unusual and probably would not be found in more than 1% of the TR6s for sale on Ebay, in my opinion. On Feb-04-12 at 05:28:33 PST, seller added the following information: Another example: Remove & refit the differential for repair. Replace the front and rear mounts, replace the stub axle and pinion shaft seals and gaskets. Refill the differential with fresh lubricant. Clean and refinish the housing ($595, Speciality Sports Cars). Another: Remove/refit the engine for overhaul. Disassemble, clean, and inspect the engine. Send the cylinder head, crankshaft, and crankcase to the machine shop for repair. Reassemble the engine and replace the following: main and connecting rod bearings, pistons, and rings, wrist pins, thrust bearings, timing chain and gears, camshaft and lifters, valves and valve guides, valves springs, rocker arms and rocker shaft, thermostat and fuel pump, replace the exhaust manifold with a good used part, overhaul the carburetors, replace the clutch pressure plate, disc, and release bearing, replace the pivot fork pin, replace the transmission front seal and gasket, replace the oil and air filters, install a fuel filter between the tank and the pump, refinish the engine and components in original colors, install a rebuilt alternator and replace the drive belt, replace the emissions and breather hoses. Tune and adjust the engine ($3,825 (labor only), Specialty Sports Cars). On Feb-05-12 at 14:47:19 PST, seller added the following information: Ownership information: We know the car was delivered to Jacksonville, FL, per the British Heritage Certificate. A North Carolina title (copy available) was issued to Owner A on 9/19/79 (mileage not indicated). On 5/12/04 a NC state inspection was accomplished and the receipt shows mileage of 56,197. I'm not sure who the owner was at that time. We have receipts paid by Owner B in Delaware, OH, in August of 2004. So the car relocated from NC to OH in 2004. I have contact information for Owner A and B. Owner B sold the car to Owner C in May 2006. I bought the car from the widow of Owner C in the summer of 2010. Owner C immediately began an ambitious mechanical restoration. Owner B had the car repainted in OH between 2004 and 2006, to the best of my knowledge. I have the new title issued to Owner C on 5/22/06 with mileage 57,780. There are numerous OH state documents issued to Owner C available. Owner C had the Michelin Red Lines installed on 6/16/06 at a cost of $886 (receipt available). These are the tires currently on the car, so they have about 3,500 miles of wear on them. Owner C took the car to Specialty Sports Car, Inc, on 05/25/06 and had a mechanical evaluation accomplished at mileage 57,905. A long laundry list of repairs was recommended. Thus began the roughly $28,000 in mechanical and cosmetic restoration for which I have receipts. This work was accomplished in the autumn of 2006 forward at mileage of 58XXX to 59XXX. There are additional repair and maintenance tickets available thereafter, including the performance evaluation of the engine and related work 500 miles after the major work was done. Owner C enjoyed the car for a short period of time before dying prematurely. His spouse kept the car for awhile and had some additional periodic mainteance accomplished at Specialty Sports Car, Inc. The car spent most of the time in her garage. Realizing she would not use the car, she put it up for sale in the summer of 2010. I purchased the car on 7/08/10 and registered it in VA with mileage 61,382. My 1935 Ford five window coupe arrived today from Leander, TX, and I'm reluctantly selling this car and a 1999 Jaguar XK8 (also on Ebay auction) currently to create space in my garage. I can't imagine that there is a TR6 out there that has a better mechanical pedigree than this car, and as you can see the string of ownership information is pretty good. If it does not sell for a reasonable price on this auction I will probably store it nearby and use other more traditional marketing venues such as Hemmings and various classic car sites. The price will likely be higher. On Feb-06-12 at 15:52:38 PST, seller added the following information: More updates & reliability for the next owner: @ mileage 59015, replace the clutch master and slave cylinders and flex hose; replace the rear brake wheel cylinders; replace front & rear brake hoses; flush & refill the brake hydraulic system; replace the broken spring clip in the driver's door check (Specialty Sports Cars). Total repair tab $1,007. Some of the engine rebuild details: Clean and pressure test the cylinder head and crankcase. Bore the cylinders. Resurface the cylinder head. Replace the valve guides and seats. Grind and polish the crankshaft (sublet to local machine shop). Repair tab $847. Coat inside and outside of exhaust manifold. $245 Remove the components and wiring harnesses from the engine compartment. Clean and refinish these parts and reinstall them after the car returns from the body shop (where the following the firewall and engine bay were refinished/repainted at a cost of $2800). Paint the frame prior to engine installation and install a new front spoiler. $1700 (The glossy high quality paint finish on the firewall and engine bay is the perfect complement to the comprehensive rebuild of the engine and related components. I've NEVER seen another TR6 engine bay with comparable appearance & detail).
