Vehicle Detail

1941 Plymouth P12 Special Deluxe Coupe 53K original miles Bone Stock example Rare A/S Coupe configuration Here up for bids on eBay is this sharp 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Coupe.  This particular car was manufactured with fold down rear seats, an extremely rare option in 1941, its official designation was billed  as an "Auxiliary Seat Coupe".  This feature offers all the utility of a business coupe with the added option of  increased seating capacity when needed.  This car is a very well preserved survivor with 53K original miles.  It features almost all original paint, an amazing original interior, and a beautifully straight body with no rust issues.  It has had recent mechanical freshening and is ready for touring, showing, or simply enjoying ownership of an original unaltered A/S Coupe.   Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page.   The body on this Plymouth is simply arrow straight, sighting down the sides you'll see smooth unbroken reflections.  As you probably know, black cars show flaws, you'll be impressed with the body on this one.  The paint appears to be all original, I haven't noticed any overspray, tape marks or blends.  It certainly does show its age, with some micro-blistering on the top surfaces and touched in chips scattered about.  The car is the proverbial 20 footer, and probably looks perfect in the photos, but be advised there are age related paint flaws.  The body won't disappoint, but the paint might.  Take a look at the close up photos of the front and rear emblems to get a visual on that.  Overall, this car looks awfully sharp running down the road, and at 71 years old, has a well earned patina. The grill is in terrific condition and is a testament to the car's low miles.  It's totally straight and crisp, still with good lustre. The front bumper is likewise excellent.  The fragile cloisonne emblem is in perfect shape. All of the stainless trim on the car is super straight with no dings or tweaks.  The car's chrome shows light pitting on some pieces, still presentable though and in line with the rest of the car. The rear bumper has been rechromed and the apron panel was repainted at that time.  The car has nice fit and finish throughout.  Running boards are all original and in super condition.  I have inspected this car from top to bottom and found no bubbling or blistering anywhere, this is an extremely solid car. All of the glass is original and in super condition, even the windshield.  Tires are older Goodyears but are in sound condition, long range touring will probably warrant new rubber.  The hubcaps and trim rings are in stellar condition on this car. The trunk is in the same state of preservation as the rest of the car. The interior is like stepping back in time, it's exactly as it left the factory 71 years ago.  The seat upholstery is in amazing condition, showing almost no wear.  From the rubber flooring to the windlacing, this car is a time capsule. The instrument display is in great shape and all of the gauges work correctly.  The radio powers on but has no sound.  The glovebox door still has the factory flocking surface intact.  At the top of the dash is the wiper switch, and they do work.  The horn isn't working, I suspect it needs a new relay. The back seatback folds up to reveal the auxiliary seats, one or both of which can be folded down, a pretty clever system really.  The upholstery back here is just as nice as the front, again, all original. The rubber flooring is in great shape.  Lots of fantastic little details found throughout this interior, part of the allure of low mile cars. Steering wheel is nice with no cracks.  The detail piece on the column shifter signifies that this car is "Powermatic Equipped", which was an optional vacuum assist system.  The beautiful woodgrained dash and garnish moldings have held up very well, showing only minor flaws.  The car was optioned with the Deluxe Heater, it operates very well. The headliner is in terrific condition with no rips or water stains. You will like the way this car runs and drives, it's a real peach.  Starts easily, doesn't smoke, and has a super smooth balanced idle.  It rides down the road with a good solid feel, the Powermatic column shift has a short throw and is the smoothest, most precise column shifter I've run across, a real pleasure to use.  The gauges show cool operating temperatures and great oil pressure, the car brakes well, tracks straight and is basically just really easy to get along with.  There's no substitute for a low mile car. The previous owner can be credited with getting this car back on the road after a long hibernation.  Receipts for the following work are included: Cleaned and sealed gas tank Carb rebuilt Fuel pump rebuilt Radiator rebuilt New master and wheel cylinders, new brake shoes New axle bearings and seals New differential gasket and pinion seal All fluids changed Also included with the car is 1941 sales literature and a factory service manual. Solid and original undercarriage tells the story of this 71 year old survivor. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
