Vehicle Detail
1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60, 149,300 MilesIn Exceptional Condition with Original Paint and Upholstery I purchased this Land Cruiser last year as a gift for my wife after spending many months searching the United States for a rust-free unmodified low-mileage FJ60 (I prefer carburation) with original paint. I did not have, nor will I ever have when acquiring an older or vintage vehicle, any interest in wondering what lies beneath some new coating. As the former manager of an exotic-car service center I have seen far too many rust and/or damage cover-ups to trust any paint job I did not personally order. When a seller says "no rust" in regard to a re-painted vehicle, he can legitimately do so when no rust shows, but "never any rust" is a different--and far more valuable--matter. This FJ60 is exceptional because it has been cared for to never have needed restoration, renovation, or rebuilding. Which is to say it is OUTSTANDING with only washing and waxing, or the perfect candidate for achieving Land Cruiser perfection if so desired. I initially insisted on locating a one-owner vehicle, but the second owner (from Seattle) was a friend of the first owner (from northern California), and he represented the vehicle's complete history with such affection and accuracy my insistence became moot. There has been only one modification to this Land Cruiser's original design concept: a sensible 2" lift accommodating 33" tires for the off-road use to which the vehicle is so well suited (but, until on my driveway last fall, had never experienced). The factory-original red paint is in very good condition; the factory-original tan upholstery looks only a few years old, sans even the typical driver-entry/exit fabric tears and foam breakdown; the factory-original driver-and passenger-area carpet is in average condition for a conscientiously cared-for vehicle with 149,000 miles; the cargo-area carpet is appropriately worn, but functional; the tailgate carpet is very worn. The dashboard has no cracks, the factory-original door upholstery is as fresh looking as the seats, and the headliner is without tears or damage (although it would benefit from a cleaning since the original owner did occasionally have passengers who smoked). The sun visors are fully functional but the interior foam has broken down. There are no after-market speaker holes cut into any part of this vehicle, and the factory tool kit sits in its niche under the driver's seat. The front seats are presently covered to preserve their cleanliness. The body of this 'Cruiser is in excellent condition. The vehicle has been driven off-road fewer than 100 miles (last summer, once a week up the gravel forest-service road that accesses the trail to my home). There are several minor dents: one is a ~6" crease just behind the left edge of the front bumper, one is just above the left fender beside the hood, there is a small ding on the right-rear quarter panel, and there are two recent dents in the tailgate, one on either side of the license plate (the result of being rear-ended at a stoplight by a big Dodge pickup: the Dodge sustained $7400 in damage, the 'Cruiser got two dents in the tailgate). All fixed-glass gaskets, window squeegees, and door rubber is in excellent condition. The engine is the original 4.2-liter 6-cylinder 2F, turning Toyota's steady and reliable -- if none too racy-- 4-speed manual transmission; the original carburetor (recently rebuilt) feeds smooth and clean. All factory smog equipment is intact and working properly, with no alterations, and even with the complete/original California-compliant EGR/air-pump/catalytic-converter system this 'Cruiser averages 14mpg around town and 17mpg on the Interstate. All ignition components are new. Engine oil has been changed every 3000 miles, and all fluids -- engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials -- are fresh synthetics. The cooling system has recently been flushed and a quality block heater installed. The newly installed power-steering and smog pumps are remanufactured A1 Cardone units; the starter is new. Steering is tight and responsive. The oil-pan gasket has a slow seep when the engine is running, but it has never leaked enough between oil changes to warrant a topping-up. The transmission and transfer case both shift decisively and accurately. Though the compressor is operational, the factory-original air-conditioning system blows only ambient-temperature air. I cannot say whether an R-134a conversion or an R-12 seal-and-recharge would be best. Winter lasts seven months in this part of Montana and summer barely two, so I have not pursued an AC upgrade or fix. The heater, however -- front and rear -- blows hot. The mild (i.e., practical) lift on this Land Cruiser was achieved 14 months/3,000 miles ago with the professional installation of Old Man Emu long leaves and heavy-duty HFS greasable shackles with poly bushings, Heckethorne Nitro shocks, extended brake lines, and a set of five new BF Goodrich 33 x 9.50 Radial All Terrains. New brakes and wheel bearings were installed at the same time. (I have the original (good) KYB shocks and Toyota shackles in case the winning bidder prefers a family-wagon-type 'Cruiser.) The photographs taken of this vehicle were not prefaced by pre-sale detailing. The engine compartment is always kept clean, the interior dusted, the carpet vacuumed, and the paint waxed. I will take specific additional photographs upon request. When I am purchasing a used vehicle from afar, I always ask of the owner (with the hope that he will reply honestly and with the knowledge that his needs are likely different than mine): If you were to keep this vehicle, what would you want to do for it? If I were to keep this Land Cruiser (my intention was never to sell it, hence permanent registration tags), I would shampoo the headliner and restore the sun visors, replace the passenger-area carpeting and pad with a quality set in tan, swap out the cargo-area carpeting for something more suitable than carpet, smooth out the tailgate dents and either do a touch-up or re-paint that panel (ready access from inside the 'gate), locate and install an Australian Land Cruiser tilt gauge (occasionally on eBay), and add fog lights. * Although I would rather not sell this FJ60, the price I am asking reflects its nationally researched objective value and my knowledge of the merit and rarity of a straight, rust-free original-finish vehicle with outstanding low-mileage components -- not my preference not to sell it. I am advertising it for sale locally, as well, and reserve the right to end the auction immediatately upon such a sale. I am not in a rush to sell it, and will advertise until it sells. I live in a remote area accessible in winter only by tracked vehicle, and have transient Internet connectivity. Please allow up to 24 hours for questions to be answered: I will reply to every inquiry, but I occasionally do not have a strong-enough signal to go online at my convenience. The vehicle is kept in my garage three miles away. A deposit of $500 is due within 24 hours of auction close, with the balance to be paid in full within seven days. I can arrange with the successful bidder to have this Land Cruiser shipped, or I will consider driving it to its destination (depending on the destination and at my discretion). I have full confidence in this vehicle's readiness to be driven anywhere, from here to Florida or Alaska, and I would, actually, enjoy driving it anywhere before parting with it. Thank you. A note on "reserve"-price auctions: I do not care to bait or test bidders by posting a starting price that I have no intention of accepting. My starting price is simply the minimum dollar amount I will accept for this Land Cruiser. On Jan-09-12 at 20:09:24 PST, seller added the following information:*** I was asked today by an eBay member if I would provide a photograph of the cargo area. Since I have already posted the maximum number of photographs available to me in an eBay listing, I will gladly send cargo-bay photos to the email address of any interested eBayer requesting them. I will not use any member's email address for any other purpose. If you would like photographs of the cargo bay, please just ask and I will send them. Thank you.
