Series 40. 107bhp, 248 cu. in. Buick 'Dynaflash' overhead valve inline eight-cylinder engine, this one has a 2x 2 barrell carburator bringing the hp 141bhp at 3,600rpm; Gearbox: three speed manual , independent front suspension with coil springs, semi-floating rear axle with coil springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 122"In 1938, Buick offered a diverse model line that included a very wide selection of wheelbases, engine output, and body styles to choose from. Their convertibles were attractive and sporting, the coupes and sedans were practical, while the limousines and custom- bodied cars offered luxury, style and distinction. Despite a general market slump, Buick still managed to sell over 170,000 cars, moving it all the way up to fourth place in American automobile sales. This success can largely be credited to the growing influence of Harley Earl's Art & Colour Section throughout General Motors, as well as Buick's General Manager, Harlow Curtice. Another major contributor to Buick's success was Charles Chayne. As Engineering Manager, he attended to the mechanical details; for 1938, these included refinements to Buick's advanced overhead valve inline eight-cylinder engine, an improved frame, and the introduction of full coil spring suspension ' an innovation that would not be seen on most competing marques for many years. The 1938 Buick Special Convertible offered here is a very fine example of these sophisticated automobiles, complemented by a handsome light Black paint finish, very good brightwork, and a delightful rumble seat. The Special continues to display a complete, 'body-off' restoration that was performed several years ago, and features dual side-mounted spare tires with body-color cases, as well as front and rear bumper guards, and body-colored steel wheels with bright hubcaps and trim rings surrounding period-style wide whitewall tires. The handsome interior features an abundance of attractive red leather upholstery, with a matching rumble seat, and is further enhanced by a wood grain dash, a unique instrument cluster, and a large 'banjo' steering wheel. Meanwhile, passenger amenities include an AM radio and a heater. Underhood, the 'Dynaflash' eight-cylinder engine is well detailed and attractive, featuring period correct finishes, components, and lettering. Recent mechanical work includes new brakes and a new water pump, as well as a new generator, starter, voltage regulator, condenser, spark plugs, and breaker points. Reported by the current owner to be a very good performer that is fun to drive, this attractive and enjoyable 1938 Buick Special Convertible remains a fine example of Buick's advanced engineering and design.
