charvetmagic Store 1953 Packard Clipper Coupe - 36,000 Mile Original Time Capsule! 1953 Packard Clipper Special Coupe - 36,000 mile original time capsule! On February 19, 1954, Mr. Charles V. Thompson visited Robertson and Perry Packard in Eugene, Oregon, where he purchased a new 1953 Packard Clipper Special Coupe. (Packard actually catalogued this model #2601-2695 as a "2 Door Club Sedan for 6 passengers".) Mr. Thompson was very practical and purchased the car from the showroom floor in Regimental Gray color with the 3-speed manual transmission, "Easamatic" Power Brakes and heater/defroster. It was indeed a rare model, with just 6,370 built. Mr. Thompson drove the car sparingly until his death, after which it was kept by his wife, Dorothy. The car was always garaged and meticulously maintained (with seat covers over the original upholstery since new.) In 1990, after 36 years of ownership and with just 32,000 miles on the odometer, Mrs. Thompson sold the Packard to legendary Portland auto dealer and collector, Guy Carr. He was attracted to the Clipper because of the low mileage and the rarity of the body style. In 1993, Mr. Carr sold the Packard to the current owner, a member of the Oregon Packard Club. He and his wife drove it to club events and on local tours, adding approximately 4,000 miles to the odometer, which now reads 36,350 actual miles. Today, the body still wears its original paint, which is in very good overall condition. Because the car has been garaged from new, the frame, undercarriage and body have NO RUST. Please see photos of the rocker panels and other details. The chrome is presentable for a driver but should be replated for show. All of the stainless trim is excellent. The tires are older bias plys (I believe the original spare is in the trunk.) Recently the owner removed the back seat cover to reveal the beautiful original striped wool fabric in amazing condition. While the front seat cover has not been removed, there is every indication that the upholstery is in equally good condition. It is truly a time-capsule vehicle. Note that the car was not detailed when the photos were taken. There is a scuff at the front of the passenger side door caused when it rubbed against something in the garage. I am sure this can be rubbed out easily, there is no damage or dent in the metal, but I do want to point it out. Also note that the car includes all documents from new, including the original bill of sale and finance agreement (30 monthly payments of $45.50 a month! Imagine car payments like that today) as well as all maintenance receipts from over the years. A great archive that confirms the low, original mileage and the care this car has received from new. Mechanically, the car runs as a Packard should: smooth, quiet and powerful. Of course, with 36,000 miles, the 288 cubic inch straight 8 is like new. There are no unusual noises, smoke or other issues. The 3-speed manual transmission shifts well and while not equipped with overdrive, the car runs easily at freeway speeds. It is a veteran of many Packard Club tours and has always performed flawlessly. Recently, the owner dropped and cleaned the gas tank and installed an auxiliary electric fuel pump to ease starting after long periods of sitting. In fact, that is his only reason for selling: he has not been driving it recently and would like to see the car go to a new owner who will drive it as it was intended to be driven. For touring or showing as a preservation-class vehicle, this is a wonderful car in a seldom-seen and desirable body style. (When have you last seen one?) A reasonable reserve has been placed on the car, in keeping with its condition and rarity. Please bid accordingly.
