Vehicle Detail
Up for auction here is a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ which is largely original and currently in working condition. The drive train is entirely stock and has not been modified, so you are dealing with a clean slate (most cars of this vintage have long since been altered). It is equipped with a Pontiac 301 engine and a TH350 transmission, both of which still function well. All the lights work, as does the heat, the power windows, the horn, and most other items. The front end seems pretty solid overall, but I would expect some wear here and there. Bear in mind that the car is 35 years old and does have 108 K miles on it....although it does cruise very nicely on the highway. The car does need its share of work, but it's at the point where it is very much worth saving. The body is decent but does need attention (it has some rust, but nothing too scary). The interior is in really good shape, although I'd have the driver's seat cushion recovered. The rest of the driver's seat is fine (back, sides, etc.), so this is a very inexpensive repair. This is a gorgeous car, and with some effort it could really turn its share of heads. Here is a run down of what I know about this car: THE GOOD: An unmolested drive train, no strange noises from the motor (no valve tap of any kind), no oil burning, transmission and rear are good, ALL NEW brake system, including master cylinder and booster, metal brake lines, calipers, wheel cylinders, hardware, shoes, etc., the trunk has been protected from rust, the floors appear to be rust-free, pretty good quarter panels, power windows work well, heat works, has a new alternator, driver's side power window motor is new, the rubber hoses attached to the gas tank have been replaced, tires are only a couple of thousand miles old and have plenty of tread on them, car drives straight and handles well. THE BAD: Some relatively minor rust issues in various spots (the front bumper guard retainers....NOT the bumper itself, but the small rubber blocks that attach to the front of it; the rear bumper brackets, which have since been repaired well enough.....this is a VERY common problem on GM cars of this type; some spots under the vinyl roof, etc.); power trunk release does not work (could be the switch); power locks work, but not very well; blower motor works well on all speeds, but will only turn off completely when car is shut off (possibly a relay); needs a vinyl roof and some paint; could use an A/C compressor (the bearing is on its way out); carburetor could use a rebuild (looks like it was never removed); the e-brake does not function the way it should. Although far from perfect, this car has enormous potential and is worth restoring if you have the means. It should be noted that these Pontiacs share MANY parts with other GM cars from the same time period (Chevys, Buicks and Oldsmobiles in particular), so obtaining what you need should not be difficult. Lots of items are still available right off the shelf at major stores as well, so they are certainly within reach. The car will be available for viewing and/or test driving so long as arrangements are made in advance. I will tell you everything I know about this car and will answer any questions you have regarding its history to the best of my ability. In addition, if you wish to transport the vehicle after purchase, I will do what I can to assist you in this process. Be aware that I offer no warranty whatsoever with your purchase, but I will give you all the available information regarding the car and will be as helpful as I can when it comes to addressing your concerns. Good luck and happy bidding!
