1976 Austin Mini 1000 Comprehensive restoration Runs and drives excellent Big fun in a little package Here up for bids on eBay is this eye catching Austin Mini 1000. A decade ago this car was rotisserie restored, top to bottom, reduced to a bare shell and built back up piece by piece. Since that time the car has traveled just over 15,000 miles and remains in excellent condition. These pre-BMW Minis have a lot to offer - fantastic mileage, easy maneuverability for parking, great club support, and of course the thrill of driving a car with an 80 inch wheelbase. Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page. Needless to say, this car gets a lot of attention. Something about its diminutive size combined with the bright, bright yellow color just makes people smile. The car is also impressive on closer inspection, showing a quality of finish that's levels above most other microcars you may run across. Coming from a total bare metal restoration, the paint finish on this car is first rate - glossy, glass smooth, and totally absent of orange peel. I'm the picky type when it comes to paint and can say that you'll be happy with the paint on this car. Body panels are arrow straight, panel gaps are all good, door click shut precisely. The fog lights in front are not wired into the harness, I see no reason why they wouldn't work with some wiring and a switch. The tires (tyres) are by Sime and show good tread, the 12" wheels are terrific, showing no road rash and zero flaws. The driver and passenger side door windows show some light scratches, and the windshield has a chip up high, out of the line of sight. That said, the glass on this car actually presents well, the aforementioned flaws don't stand out readily. All of the glass seals and weatherstripping on the car have been replaced. All of the chrome on the car is in great shape with no pitting, the door handles in particular look great. All locks are functional on the car. These are pictures from the restoration, as you can see it was a big job. Any rust that was found was cut out and replaced with new metal. The car was then primed, blocked, and primed again. All mechanical systems were rebuilt before being assembled back into the car. These pictures, along with about 200 others, will be included on a CD for the new owner. This Mini has held up very well over the years and still looks fresh. The trunk carries a Michelin spare and a high end audio system. The car is titled as a 1976 Mini and has a clear Washington State title. The interior is very well done with all new materials. The seats are by Mini specialist Cobra, they are very comfortable and add a nice touch to this car. The seating position is just right and once you're settled in there's actually quite a bit of room. All lights and signals work, horn works, the heater and fan work, as well as the rear defroster. Very nice steeing wheel by Astrali. All gauges are operating correctly and show good readings. The wood veneered dash is in great shape with no spidering or clouding. It does seem to squeak quite a bit but I've learned to block it out. The more ambitious may want to track down the source of it. In the meantime there's an excellent sound system for use in this car, along with an I-Pod jack. A 12V outlet was wired in adjacent to it. Nice looking door panels, tidy back seat area and headliner. Front passengers get retractable 3-point belts, there are 2 lap belts for the back seat passengers. This Mini fires to life instantly and runs strong. It gets right up and runs down the road with authority, when you get behind the wheel you are driving a car! No texting, no daydreaming, this is like track day everyday. The car runs cool, shows great oil pressure, doesn't smoke, and really doesn't even leak. The car brakes well, tracks straight, shifts well, and of course handles like it's on rails. The undercarriage shows about 15,000 miles of use.
