Vehicle Detail
The Triumph TR8 is an eight-cylinder version of the "wedge-shaped" Triumph TR7 sports car, manufactured by British Leyland (BL), through its Jaguar/Rover/Triumph (JRT) division. Because of its phenomenal performance, the TR8 was often dubbed the "English Corvette" or “Mini-Cobra.” Think of the famed Sunbeam Tiger (valued today at over $50k), a Sunbeam Alpine with its Ford V8 engine, and you get the idea. The TR8 used a Rover V8 engine that was derived from an early 1960s Buick/Oldsmobile all-aluminum 215 cu in V8 unit that Rover acquired from General Motors in the mid-60s. History has shown this engine to be an extremely reliable, flexible, and robust power plant. They have been used in Range Rovers for decades. TR8s were initially fitted with twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors. The stock carburetor model was rated at 133 bhp but with a 4-bbl carb and high rise intake as is fitted on this car, the TR8 can deliver 0–60 mph times in the 7 second range. In a car this size, that is fast! Other differences between the TR8 and TR7 are upgraded brakes, revised axle ratio, battery moved to the trunk, alloy wheels, leather steering wheel, etc. The Michelotti re-designed TR8 Convertible was introduced in 1979, and all subsequent TR8s were convertibles. Total worldwide production is only around 2750. In the U.S., the TR8 originally sold for around $11,000. A current rough estimate of the number of these cars remaining is around 750, making this one of the rarest Triumph sports cars. This car has been owned and maintained by the same local British car expert and restorer for over 20 years, but it did not require restoration. It was repainted once many years ago, and if you look closely, you will see some evidence of the clearcoat crazing and a couple of minor dings that could be paintlessly removed. The interior is amazingly original, which attests to this car's gentle use, although the car does have a brand new top. The mileage is an original 36k and she runs as the expression goes, “like a raped ape.” There is no rust or body damage, so this must be one of the most original, low mileage examples around. The NADA book value of this car is between $9000 and $15,000 (look it up yourself), so this particular car represents an excellent bargain for someone interested in British motoring with blistering performance. Just the sound of this car will get your blood rushing! Whether you drive it as is for many years as is, or have it repainted now or in the future is up to you. In either case, my only advice would be to hold on to your hat. I will be glad to answer any questions I can at 347 585 4200 or at michaelfracz@gmail.com On Nov-03-11 at 19:15:25 PDT, seller added the following information: I have been told that I am color blind and that the car is NOT Gold, but in fact, SILVER BLUE. Okay, that makes sense, as the interior is a complementary blue-based plaid (original). Also, the reserve has just been lowered within the permissable limit, so someone is very close to owning this exciting car! Good luck and happy bidding.
