Vehicle Detail

1965 Chevelle Malibu Convertible Description Just completed frame off restoration of a 1965 Chevelle Malibu convertible. A detailed list is at the end of this description, but to summarize, nearly every thing on the car has been replaced or rebuilt. The goal was a stock restoration with a few deviations discussed later. The driving experience is smooth and comfortable. The transmission shifts smoothly and with the overdrive and 3:36 gears cruises nicely on the free way. The exhaust is louder than stock because 2 ½ aluminized exhaust pipes with turbo mufflers were used. The sound is noticeable without being too loud or any objectionable harmonics. The interior is completely redone with new carpets, seats, door panels, dash pad etc. Only the kick panels are reused. The car is in very nice shape and could be shown in car shows without being embarrassed. However, there are a few imperfections in the paint that makes it less than perfect. The paint is driver quality, not trailered to a show quality. Quick Specifications Paint: 1965 Corvette Silver Pearl (code QQ) base coat, clear coat Interior: Two tone dark/medium Saddle, buckets in front, bench in back Engine: 1968 307 Transmission: TH700 overdrive with lockup torque converter, console shifted Rear end: 3:36 open differential Power steering, power drum brakes Manual convertible top Details Engine: 1968 307 cleaned and machined at local machine shop with rebuilt or new components. Bored 0.040" over with a mild upgraded cam. Stock exhaust manifold, intake manifold and Quadrajet carburetor. Transmission: TH700 rebuilt at local shop with all of the TH700 upgrades to make it stronger than stock. Set up with a slightly stronger than stock shift program. At part throttle it shifts very smoothly but has more positive engagement than stock at full throttle or when manually downshifting. The transmission has a lock up torque converter set up to engage when the car is in over drive. Suspension: is completely rebuilt with new stock springs, bushings, ball joints etc. and slightly stiffer than stock shocks. The rear lower control arms have been boxed and fitted with a rear sway bar. Front sway bar has been upsized for better handling. Frame corner braces for a manual transmission car have been added to stiffen the frame in the rear differential frame cross member to side frame rails area. Front camber and caster have been set for good handling and tire life with radials. Body: Rusty panels have been replaced and repaired as required. Panels replaced include the floor board, trunk floor, quarter panels and wheel housings. Wheel housings have been undercoated. Front body fenders and hood are original, rust free donor panels. New grill, emblems, bumpers, and mirrors, were used. Also all trunk lid trim is new. Windshield frame and convertible top pinch weld trim is original and has been polished. Brakes: The brakes were refurbished with a rebuilt master cylinder and power booster. New brake lines are used through out both steel and rubber. New wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware is used. Two drums were turned, and two are new. New wheel bearings, seals and grease were used to reinstall the wheels. Wheels: The stock wheels are used. They were cleaned up and repainted to match the body color as the factory did. Either dog dish hubcaps or wire wheel hubcaps are available with it. You decide which ones you want and I will sell the others. Look at the pictures to see the difference. Stock size radial tires were put on the wheels for good handling and fuel economy. The trunk has a new spare tire on a freshly painted stock rim. It also has all of the jack parts. Convertible top: The convertible top frame was cleaned and painted in preparation for a new top with new rubber seals. A new convertible top well liner was added as well. The top is a manual top and operates smoothly. Interior: New carpet, pad, door sills, welting, door panels, seat covers, dash pad, glove box, and sun visors were used. Dash frame was repainted and a new dash carrier was installed. A new front windshield was used with the side glass being all original. New door seals were installed. The heater system was removed and rebuilt with a new heater core, cleaned and painted ducts and controls. The vent doors were cleaned, painted and had new seals installed. New window felts were used on the doors. It has the original AM radio and speaker. The radio doesn't work and the speaker cone is deteriorated. The glove box is new. The convertible top, pads and well liner are new. You get to choose between the stock steering wheel and the sport steering wheel shown in the pictures, so look carefully. Fuel System: New steel fuel lines, new gas tank, new sending unit. The fuel gauge reads 3/4 on a full tank. Wiring: The forward lamp harness, rear lamp harness, engine harness are all new. The intermediate (flat cable) body harness and dash harness are original. Non Stock Items: There are a few things on this car that are not stock which I will point out for a full description. Tires are radials and not bias ply. The air cleaner and valve covers are not stock. The car came with a front bench seat which I have converted to buckets with a console (I still have the refurbished bench frame). The automatic was initially a power glide, but since it didn't come with the car I put in a TH700 (much nicer than a PG anyway). I used the motor that came with the car, a 1968. I have set it up correctly for a '68 which is better than a '65 anyway since it has a PCV valve and the '65 used a road draft tube which didn't scavenge harmful crank case vapors very well leading to shorter engine life. The '68 engine also has a Q jet carburetor which is superior to the Rochester 4GC or 2GC. Also note that the exhaust is 1/4" larger than stock with turbo mufflers. The clock was dead so I put in a reproduction tachometer in its place. Purchase Terms: A cashier's check or cash can be used for the purchase but the cashier's check will have to clear my bank before releasing the car and signing over the title to the buyer. If you don't pay within two weeks I will re-list the car unless other arrangements are made with me ahead of time. Once I have received payment I will notify you and mail the signed title to you via registered mail unless you choose to pick it up in person. My reserve is lower than the NADA price range of $23,300 (non V8) to $30,290 (327). I will provide the winning buyer with a full list of parts and services performed on the car as well as build pictures if desired. Thanks for looking and good luck on your bidding Shipping: Buyer is responsible for either driving the car home or in arranging transportation for it. I will be pleased to be available to have the car loaded on a carrier or picked up as needed.
