Vehicle Detail
You are looking a well cared for rare 86.5 Porsche 928S"3" 5 speed 5.0 4Cam 32Valve . I bought this car 7 years ago from an airline pilot who had it since 1990. He had a mountain of receipts we went through but i ran off and left them when I bought it. I was not too concerned about resale and I’m not a receipt horder so I don't keep that stuff, besides, even though he showed me 30k worth of receipts, the car still had some bugs. The previous owner had maintained two homes on both ends of the country and most of the miles on this car are from him or his wife going back and forth until he retired. I have put about 13500 happy miles on it, mostly to Las Vegas, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Arizona and love to drive it. It’s a great highway and around town car and has never let me down. Smooth as glass at a 100+ mph-and there is still two gears left!. The 928 has mixed reviews depending on maintenance and care. This car was well taken care of over the years and I have worked out most of the existing bugs that these cars are prone too. A low mileage car is fine, but will eventually need everything that I have done to this one. Thanks to great online support and clubs dedicated to these cars, they are a joy to own. Thank you Rennlist. Cars have always been my hobby, and I have had a lot of fun with this one, but I am looking into my next build. A T-bucket maybe. The primary concern with these cars when purchasing is the maintenence records (which I mentioned I am lacking) because I do my own work, and the intricate timing belt system. The following is a list of what I have done to the car and list some of the things one can expect to be wrong, or eventually go wrong with one of lessor adequate care. Timing Belt Water Pump: I replaced the timing belt, cam gears, oil pump gear, crank gear, tensioner, bolt, and timing belt light electrical at 148K, I check tension every spring-its perfect. Motor Mounts: New at 148K These collapse over time and creates a very rough feel. Replaced and very smooth. Cruise Control: The boards go bad due to weak soldering. I had the board resoldered and it works fine. Lights Control Relay: The lights will start doing some strange things, its usually attributed to dirty or faulty relay. fixed and works perfect. Dash Lights Dim: I did not like the original dash lights, I installed speed hut reverse glow gages, can switch to blue or green variable brightness Very nice at night. Shifter Coupler at Trans: Replaced shifter coupler at transmission to tighten up the shifter feel at ~150K. Dual Clutch Disks TO & Master cylinder: Clutch Discks new at 141K master cylinder at ~150K. Very strong grip. Manual transmission: Works fine, no grinding, up shift or down shift at virtually any speed. Air Conditiong: Previous owner spent $4000 a year before I bought the car. It uses modern 134a. Works great, even has rear A/C works great. The body paint and interior is in good shape, this car is a driver, not a show car, but I guess you could show if you wanted to. The interior is all black and all leather, it even has the desirable stitched leather dash and console. The seats are showing some wear at the driver side outer bolster from getting in and out, mostly because they are so far forward, but this style seat (also desirable) just hug you and are very comfortable. I just never got around to fixing the leather because there are no decent shops in my area. Glass is in good shape and tinted, radio antenna is in the glass. I replaced the electric window motor on the passenger side last year. Fuel Injectors: Two years ago it had a dead fuel injector and it failed smog, so I replaced/upgraded them to the motorsport blue tops. Exhaust: I installed the dual rear muffler bypass so it sounds really healthy. This doesnt affect smog or the catalytic converter, all that functions as it should and cleared last year. The only warning light that is on is the ABS light, this is from a faulty wire on the front right to the wheel sensor. I fixed it once about five years ago but didn’t like the way the anti-lock brakes felt-so I unfixed it. This car has great brakes and will stop on a dime. All the pads were replaced 2 years ago and the rotors turned. The previous owner used synthetic oil in the motor, so I continue to do the same. The Engine is very solid. When I had the injector problem I did a compression check on both banks, it had 174 to 180 PSI across both banks. Thats not bad, not bad at all. I believe the use of synthetics has allowed this engine to stay young and perky, one would never believe the mileage on the odometer. I have tried to explain the car as well as I could, if I didn’t mention anything, then it’s because there is probably no issues with it. I have seen many 928's and this one truly stand out. Some that are not maintained-reciepts or not-can really show their age and give you a lot of problems. A person could fly into central California and drive this car home to Miami right now. Its a real gem in my opinion. I have probably did some things I forgot to mention but feel free to ask. It’s only been in the rain a few of times and always garaged. I have a couple oil filters because I ordered a box when I first got the car. The pictures should cover most of what I didn’t mention. I took the photos in the bright sun so you could see every detail. Any orange is just glare. The paint is fine. I have not waxed it this year but it still looks pretty good. This car has personality and loves to driven. Any way you want to. It’s a great mild mannered cruiser, it’s a fine looker, and will blow most of the cars out there into the weeds. Very modern performance for a 25 year old "antique"..!!! Oh, it needs a door jam button on the passenger door, easy fix, and I just put a new battery in it. The reserve is fair. I would rather lose the listing fee than give this car away. Thanks for looking. The 2nd and 3rd owner was the same person registered 1st on the east coast, then changed to California. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJWIBDZMufEOn Sep-25-11 at 13:24:57 PDT, seller added the following information: Walk around and start up video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2tC6Z_zoxMOn Sep-25-11 at 13:49:18 PDT, seller added the following information:
