Vehicle Detail

1976 Volkswagen VW Vanagon Type 2 (II) Westfalia Camper Van I purchased this car in January of 2011 for an epic driving trip across South America (starting in Buenos Aires and ending in Mississippi). Unfortunately, the company that was supposed to ship the vehicle went out of business and never delivered the car (don't worry, I got my money back). Anyway, the trip still happened, just in another vehicle, and this van spent the ensuing 6 months sitting in a shipping yard in Houston. I'm moving back to South America now full-time and need to sell the van. A brief (recent) history of the vehicle:I bought the vehicle in Atlanta in January, 2011 half-way through a complete restoration. The gentleman who sold it to me didn't have enough money to finish the restoration so sold it to me in mid-restoration; it was in near perfect condition mechanically, but definitely far from perfect in the looks department. Prior to his purchasing the car (in 2010), it had sat inside a garage in Decatur, GA (Atlanta suburb). I'm not sure about the history before that, but judging from the lack of rust on the undercarriage, most, if not all, of its life has been spent here in the Southeast. I put in a new windshield, got a new paint job, pop tent, four new tires, Sony MP3/CD with four new speakers, new clutch and also made some minor aesthetic improvements. The vehicle is not in perfect condition, but as you can see from the photos it's getting there. I've put about 1,500 miles on the vehicle driving it across the Southeast US (Atlanta>Nashville>Jackson>Houston>Austin>Dallas>Little Rock>Jackson) and apart from replacing the clutch, have had no problems. I've gotten her up to 90mph on the highway on a flat with no problem but usually keep it around 65mph for safety and so as not to wear out the engine. Obviously, when it's windy, you have to drive a lot slower. The vehicle was fully inspected by Volkswagen of Jackson (the local VW certified dealer) earlier this week. You can call them at 866-927-1760 if you want to confirm any of the details or ask them about the vehicle. It turned a few heads while it was in there, so I'm sure they'll remember it. The following items in the vehicle are brand new (same as above):- Paint job- Pop tent- Windshield- Sony MP3/Aux input CD Player + 4 new speakers- Four new tires- New clutch ($1100)- Just changed the oil Complete results from the inspection by Jackson VW (Jackson, MS's authorized VW dealer):- Oil pressure is 2 bars / 29 psi at 2,500 rpm (same as original factory specs)- Front axle CV joints are leaky and should be replaced- Dashboard fuel gauge does not work- Steering linkage is loose- Brakes need replacement- Kitchen sink in the back needs a new pump- Auxiliary battery wiring is in place but it needs a new auxiliary battery- Some of the cabinet knobs/latches need to be replaced If I wasn't leaving in a week, I'd spend a few weekends this fall getting this vehicle in perfect shape. The body, frame, and engine are already there; all it really needs now is some attention to the details. www.TheSamba.com is a great resource for used VW parts and discussions. I've bought replacement parts here before and am confident you could find everything you need here to get it into near perfect condition. Busdepot.com, gowesty.com, and selectvwparts.com are also great resources. I would highly recommend Rob at selectVWparts.com; his customer service has been amazing! I don't know everything about the mechanics, etc. of this car but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to find out the answer. Feel free to ask anything, but make sure to ask before hitting buy it now. I know there are a lot of people out there who are interested and I don't want to take it down unless it's really ready to sell. Bob
