Vehicle Detail

1937 Buick Special Frame off restoration Complete mechanical rebuild Show winning example Up for bids is this exceptional 1937 Buick Special.  This car has been completely restored from top to bottom with masterful workmanship and an eye towards authenticity.  It features Hunley Acuff running boards, a full Hampton Coach interior, beautifully woodgrained dash and a perfectly recast steering wheel by JB Donaldson.  Every piece of chrome on the car has been redone, all stainless straightened and polished, all new glass, and all new weatherstripping throughout.  The car has logged just over 3000 miles since the restoration and is sure to be a competitve entry at any judging event.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car was completely disassembled for the restoration, every nut and bolt, no detail was overlooked.  In fact, it's the details that make this car so exceptional, everywhere you look the quality of the work is apparent.  Starting from a terrific original body, the car was expertly primed, blocked, and finished in DuPont acrylic lacquer for an appearance that feels absolutely period correct.  All trim has been rechromed, every piece, including all of the window frames.  All new glass adds to the appearance of looking at a new car that just happens to be 74 years old.  All new window gaskets, window felts and a complete weatherstripping set completes the package.  All of the stainless trim on the car is in fine condition with excellent lustre.  Running boards are accurate reproductions from specialists Hunley-Acuff, they are perfect. The interior has been completely redone with materials from Hampton Coach for total authenticity.  The interior looks, feels, and even smells like a time warp back to 1937.   The front floor mat is a correct "Fisher Body" reproduction in excellent condition.  All interior hardware has been rechromed, every piece, right down to the sunvisor brackets and door strikers. Excellent fit and finish everywhere you look in this interior.  Both front and rear wing window frames have been rechromed, all garnish moldings have been redone, weatherstripping and window gaskets are all new. Perhaps the highlight of this interior is the expert woodgraining of the dash and window garnish moldings.  These pieces were sent to Fauxreal in Oakland where Craig Clemens created the masterpiece you see here.  In addition, all instrumentation was rebuilit and new instrument panels were painted by hand by Jon Gateman & Son of Vashon, WA.  Complimenting the dashboard is a beautifully recast steering wheel by JB Donaldson in Phoenix.  This wheel is displayed on the home page of his website; www.steeringwheelsusa.com.  Next to the wheel you'll notice the "Yankee 960" turn signal switch, a desirable item that's period correct for this car. The trunk contains a matching Firestone "DeLuxe Champion" spare, and the factory jacking equipment.  Also included with the car is a large assortment of spare parts, plus a high quality and huge California Car Cover. The engine and transmission have been rebuilt and are both terrific.  The big Buick Eight provides plenty of power to easily propel this car to freeway speeds.  The car runs strongly, shifts precisely, brakes well and runs cool.  The car has all new fuel and brake lines, stainless steel master and wheel cylinders, stainless exhaust, and a new radiator. The car has a new YNZ wiring harness from front to back using the correct lacquer-coated braided wire.  The wiring connections to the Trippe lights and the dash clock have not been hooked up and I haven't looked into the reason why.  All other electrical items function as intended. As you can see in the photo below, the cooling system has been converted to a pressurized system for cooler running temperatures.  Next to it you'll see that an auxiliary oil pressure gauge has been installed, both the dash gauge and this one show great readings. Included with the car is a large assortment of literature and original manuals specific to this car.  Also included, but not shown are over a hundred back issues from various Buick Clubs, including 'Torque-Tube', the publication of the 1937-1938 Buick Club. The undercarriage shows the extent of the work that was done, and the well preserved nature of the car that was transformed into the magnificent example you see here today.
