Vehicle Detail
1984 Plymouth Colt GTS Turbo, Silver with Burgundy interior Options: A/C, Power mirrors, Rear wiper, Digital clock History: I purchased this car in early 2009 and I am the 4th owner. The 3rd owner had purchased the car in October 2007 from the 2nd owner who owned it for 20 years. The car has been stored in a garage for the last few years waiting for me to find the time to complete the minor (mostly cosmetic) restoration work it needs. Since I have too many other projects I am moving on and letting this car go to a new owner. When the 3rd owner purchased the car, it had been sitting since 1992 due to a non-starting problem. It was discovered that someone had poured sugar into the gas tank and it completely clogged the entire fuel system. To get the car running, the 3rd owner replaced the fuel tank, cleaned out all of the fuel lines, installed a new fuel pump, new fuel filter(s), rebuilt the throttle body, and cleaned the fuel injectors. After this work, the car runs great. The previous owner provided a lot of detail when I purchased the car, which I have summarized below along with any additional information gleaned from my years of ownership. To say that a car of this type with this low mileage is rare is an understatement. I have watched the market for these cars over the past 10 years and have seen a car with this low mileage only twice. Interior: The majority of the interior is clean and in better than average condition. There are no burn marks, and the car has its original carpet and seats. The door panels are complete and in good condition. There are a few small areas of separation in the fabric on the driver seat, a few cracks in the dash, and a tear in the headliner (but the material is not sagging). Also, the fabric on the rear deck shelf is in bad shape and has aftermarket speakers installed. The original rubber straps to lift the rear deck when you open the hatch are intact. An aftermarket (80’s vintage) AM/FM stereo cassette with digital display is installed and I do not have the original radio. Electrical: The majority of the car’s electrical components are sound and function properly. All outboard lights are functioning. The power mirror switches are complete (not broken), but the mirrors do not move. Also, the gas gauge does not work for some reason despite all the fuel system work completed by the previous owner. This is likely a quick fix, but I haven’t diagnosed the problem. Exterior: The body is straight with no visible rust through points or evidence of any accidents (with the exception of the passenger fender). At some point, it appears that someone backed into the passenger front fender as it has a large dent (there is no other damage in the area). A replacement fender is included. The car is primarily rust free, but I have discovered certain areas where surface rust has started and needs to be addressed. I have done my best to highlight these in the attached pictures. The worst area is on the bottom of the passenger door and a rusted plug in the spare tire well. Overall the paint is poor and there are a number of dings/dents across the hood and other body parts. This appears to be hail damage. There are also a few drill holes on each side of the car from an old molding that was removed. The car appears to have been repainted at some point. All glass is clean and in great condition. All Turbo Colt trim pieces are present and in good condition, including the honeycomb grille, front and rear spoilers, and side skirts. The tires are all matching and in good condition. Mechanical: The engine runs very strong and starts up with no problem. Compression checks out at across all cylinders. The exhaust system looks good with no leaks or rust and no smoke. The cooling system seemed sound with no leaks or white residue around any hoses or gasket points. The turbo spools nicely and provides smooth and consistent boost. No fuel or exhaust odors when you’re driving. The transmission is in good shape with all gears operating smoothly, including the high and low range. Clutch is strong. The car does not pull when braking or have brake squeal, but it does need new brakes. Also, the outer driver’s side CV joint is missing the boot and is completely dry and rusted (clicking when driven). This needs to be replaced and 2 new front axles are included. The EGR pipe has been repaired with a clamped rubber hose (see pictures), but I am not sure what is wrong with it. It does not impact the cars performance, but clearly doesn’t look stock. I do have an additional EGR pipe available from a donor car. There appears to be a leak at the valve cover gasket. There is a slight valve noise (tick), so a valve adjustment is needed. Second owner claimed that the head was rebuilt with new valve guides, but I have no way to document this. The A/C does not work and I have not attempted to diagnose the issue. The interior switch lights up (green light turns on), but I don’t hear the compressor click on. Please note that there are no warranties (express or implied) for this vehicle and it is sold as-is. I have done my best to describe the vehicle as accurately as possible, but all the information contained in this listing is based on my subjective opinion. Any prospective buyer is encouraged to view the car in person or have a professional review its condition to draw their own conclusions. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to arrange a test drive.
