Vehicle Detail
Classic" Saab 900 "models are becoming attractive as a special interest automobile and enjoy a growing cult status among enthusiasts. The combination of unique, "aircraft inspired" appearance with innovative quality engineering and pleasing road manners make these cars particularly appealing to those who appreciate automobiles. Convertibles and turbos tend to attract the most interest, though the increasing rarity of well kept "unmolested" examples are making nearly all variants potentially collectible. As Saab was a low volume manufacturer, most Saabs are relatively uncommon and any Saab limited edition model is considered particularly unusual. What set the 900 Turbo apart from its turbo-equipped competitors, especially in the early- and mid-1980s, was the development and use of the Automatic Performance Control (APC) boost controller. The system allowed the engine to run at the limits of engine knocking. The system had a knock sensor attached to the motor block and if knocking of any kind was present, the APC-system would decrease the charge pressure by opening a wastegate, a bypass to the exhaust. This enabled the use of various octane fuels and also made the use of the turbocharger safer for the engine. Some 900 Aeros and Carlssons had special APC controllers in red and black enclosures (so-called "redbox" APCs) that provided more boost and increased power to 175 hp (130 kW) or 185 hp (138 kW) without a catalytic converter. 3-Door 900s have a strong following among those who appreciate Saab's closed 900 models — in particular the iconic turbocharged models including the 900 SPG (a high-performance version of the 1985-1991 Saab 900 Turbo 3-door typically equipped with leather interiors, aerodynamic side panels, and upgraded suspension components). THIS CLASSIC 900 TURBO BOASTS UNMOLESTED INTERIOR AND CARRIES ALL ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SPEC'S. THE CAR DOES HAVE SOME SURFACE RUST ON THE LOWER PORTION OF THE L/S REAR QUARTER PANEL AND DOES HAVE RUST ON BOTH SIDES OF THE REAR FLOOR PANELS.NOTE: THESE ARE ALL REPAIRABLE BY A QUALIFIED AUTO BODY PROFESSIONAL. The car was purchased by me from the original owner with 69000 original miles on her approx. 4+ years ago. I have replaced the pinion bearings in the transmission along with the clutch kit assembly. I have also replaced both front wheel bearings and front lower shock bushings. The interior headliner has been replaced. The car needs some minor TLC (ie.tires,a/c recharge,r/s outer cv boot, interior blower motor, etc) but for an original copy of a 1988 900 turbo you will be hard pressed to find many of these cars around in this kind of shape in the near future. This car runs great and will be a perfect investment in owning a classic 900 turbo for many years to come. Please feel free to e-mail me with any and all questions you might have about this car. I reserve the right to end the auction prior to the end.
