Vehicle Detail
1986 Ford Mustang SVO, Medium Canyon Red (Paint Code 2A), Cloth interior, Sunroof. This car is in great overall condition and has low miles. History: I purchased this car a little over 5 years ago and I am the 4th owner. The previous (3rd) owner purchased the car in late 2002 when it had about 41k miles. Prior to that I do not know the ownership history, but I believe the car was originally out of South Carolina. Car has been enthusiast-owned and traded hands through the classifieds on the svoca.com website at least twice (that is where myself and the previous owner found this car). The third owner had purchased the car for autocross competition in the stock class. Shortly after he purchased the car, it developed a misfire and after an unsuccessful attempt to diagnose the problem, he decided to rebuild the engine exactly to the factory specs (in order to keep the car in the stock class for autocross). The rebuild fixed the problem. I also purchased this car with the intention of using it for autocross in the stock class, but only made it to one race. After that it mainly sat in my garage and was brought out only for the occasional weekend drive. Eventually, I decided to drive the car more often and this car has been my daily driver for the past 1½ years. Mechanical: The car was not driven much during my first years of ownership, but has now become my daily driver. The car runs great and is very fast with plenty of turbo boost. When I purchased the car, the previous owner provided a lot of information regarding the engine rebuild (see above) which I have summarized: In his attempt to diagnose a misfire condition, he replaced the fuel pump, injectors, fuel rail, coil, boost solenoid, VAM, and many others. This did not correct the problem, so he decided to rebuild the engine. Ultimately, the engine was rebuilt at approximately 50,000 miles and bored .020 over with NOS factory forged TRW pistons and factory rings. All new bearings (mains, rods, cam) were installed, the rods were reconditioned and the rotating assembly was balanced. The crank was not reground, because it was in great shape. The cylinder head was rebuilt and had a 3 angle valve job, including new turbo valves, springs, retainers, cam, lifters, and followers. The car has an E6 exhaust manifold and retains its original turbo and downpipe. The previous owner converted to single exhaust with a dynomax race magnum muffler and single Dynomax 2 ½” polished stainless tailpipe (original dual exhaust tips are included). The previous owner also replaced all the rubber brake hoses and installed a new clutch and pressure plate. He also freshened the rear end with new outer bearings, seals, and trac-lok friction discs. The car has recently developed an oil leak, which I have not addressed. This does not impact the car’s performance, but I do need to add oil every now and then. Also, the A/C system is all intact, but there is no cold air and I have not tried to fix this. Electrical: Everything works, but there are a few issues, as follows. The foglight switch is stuck in the ON position; the power door lock on passenger side does not operate (actuator?), and the engine cooling fan is currently operated by a switch (hidden under the dash) so it runs all the time when the car is on (bad fan control module). Exterior: The paint is good, but not perfect. It shines up real nice when waxed, but can appear dull other times. The trim was repainted black by a previous owner and could use a touch up (or return to original gray). There are some small dings here and there and the most prominent is a quarter-sized dent on the front fender. There are many rock chips on the front which is typical for these cars. New headlights were recently installed because the original units were faded beyond repair. The body panels are generally straight and ding-free. There is no rust anywhere on the car that I can see. I have provided pictures of some typical rust-prone areas to show the condition (e.g., rear hatch area, door bottoms, undercarriage). The windshield does have a crack and needs to be replaced. Also, all of the side glass is etched with stripes at the base, including the initials “SVO” in the rear quarter glass. I had considered replacing the glass and have a full set of replacement glass without etching (both doors and rear quarters). The door belt weatherstrip is dry and cracked and needs to be replaced. Interior: The interior is in overall great shape and shows minimal wear. The drivers seat does not show wear along the bolsters. The dashboard is in good shape, but does have some discoloration and cracking by the passenger-side speaker grille. The fuzzy dash panel inserts are worn and scratched (looks like someone inadvertently cleaned off the fuzzy). Carpet looks good, but headliner needs to be replaced (has started coming down). The shifter knob and steering wheel are worn, but not worn through. I do not have a cargo cover. Also, the driver-side visor’s vanity mirror cover tabs are broken. There are also a few miscellaneous trim screws that are missing here and there, as well as one of the plastic knobs from the A/C controls. Extra parts/items: Original dual exhaust tips are included, Full set of shop manuals, Extra set of wheels and tires for autocross (stock size) - 5-ziegen Fn01r-c wheels with set of Kumho Victoracer V700 tires used at one autocross event. The wheels are 16x7 and weigh 16 lbs/each and the tires are size 225/50R16. Like any used car that is 25 years old this car is not perfect, however, this is a solid, rust-free, and mechanically sound car that does not need much to be close to perfect. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Please note that there are no warranties (express or implied) for this vehicle. I have done my best to describe the vehicle as accurately as possible, but all the information contained in this listing is based on my subjective opinion. Any prospective buyer is encouraged to view the car in person or have a professional review its condition to draw their own conclusions.I drive this car every day, so the actual mileage at the time of sale will be more than listed above and the car’s overall condition may change slightly due to normal wear and tear.
