FIAT 124 Spider 1981 2,000cc, fuel injection, Pininfarina 50th anniversary limited edition. In 1981 Pininfarina built a run of 1,000 Spiders painted in a champagne cream color to commemorate its 50th anniversary in business. These models were particularly desirable, sporting leather upholstery and Abarth-style 5.5J magnesium wheels. The Pininfarina badge was the car’s special edition number, and is repeated on the dash. The 124 Spider you’re bidding on is number 714 of this 1,000 run! The odometer reads 38,508 miles; the original owner donated the car to a charity in 2003, and I bought it from a middleman that year. It spent most of its existence in Southern California and is rust free. I made $4,000 worth of improvements and replacements to the cooling, electrical, and heating systems; in 2008 I replaced the alternator, timing belt and the wheel bearings. This Spider has been repainted Italian red, and the original worn leather seats have been replicated with custom fitted imitation leather vinyl covers. A chrome luggage rack is mounted to the trunk. The original leather covered steering wheel has been replaced with a wooden one: the original steering wheel is stowed in the trunk. The original gear shift boot has been replaced with new cowhide. The original vinyl top was replaced in 2006 with 36-ounce pinpoint grain vinyl that is preshrunk and waterproof, and has a 40-gauge “Regalite BUV Ultralite” plastic window, which offers superior resistance to UV rays and scratches. The power window on the passenger side operates flawlessly, allowing the driver to raise and lower it while driving. The electric motor for the driver’s side window must be replaced. This window must be operated manually. The original radio has been replaced with a removable CD/MP3 player/radio. This Spider has a backseat! It’s great for toting items such as sporting equipment and groceries, or transporting small people. The four cylinder FIAT 2,000cc engine, fuel injection and twin overhead cams make for both decent fuel economy and impressive performance. The twin overhead cams are housed in the distinctive convex sculpted hood. This sporty and beautifully styled vehicle is a joy to drive: the handling is enhanced by the solid steel chassis construction, the shifting is smooth yet mechanically precise: it has 5 gears!
