Vehicle Detail

1992 Audi V8 Quattro w/ the more desirable 4.2 liter engine. I'm hoping this will suffice. The right buyer will know what this car is and not need to hear all the amenities, accessories, features and so on. These are rare cars. I believe only a few hundred imported for this year. The odometer says 105K but there are 150K in reality. This car had the drive mechanicals that would appear in the 1997 A8 but a special stretched 200 series body. In actuality the only body panels shared with the 200 series is the rear trunk although overall there is a strong resemblance. Here is the good, the bad, but no ugly on this one: July 16th update: passed CA smog today: maximum HC allowed 120; average 29; THIS CAR; 20 CO (%): maximum allowed: 1.00; average .10; THIS CAR, .01 The Good: Titan metallic gray exterior that is still beautiful and lush (some slight fading on the sunroof but wax brings it back out)Black leather interior that is in very good condition (no shrinkage, tearing, etc.)Headliner is excellent Lots of preventive maintenance done (timing belt service with all associated components 38k ago, speed & ref. sensors replaced, transmission service, all fluids flushed, breather hoses, new power steering pump, hydraulic hoses, CV half axle, new alternator, plugs, ignition switch, climate control head, idle stabilizer valve, and more)Drives like a champ; I've had several of these and this is the fastest one I've owned. I think because it's burning some oil (quart in 700) that the engine is a bit looser and just goes like a rocket when you need itTransmission shifts flawlessly and smoothlyBrakes good, tires OKCold, very cold A/CSunroof works fineRecent professional window tinting Note: the 1992 Audi V8 has numerous changes and upgrades from the 1990 or 1991 version. I owned a 1990 and they are really very different feeling and driving cars. Here's what Audi did for 1992: BBS wheels4.2 much more powerful engineimproved suspension which is more compliant; the 1990 is too harshstraight out exhaust tips that look coolerservomatic power steering rackNew front brake systempassenger side airbagnew climate control system (got rid of the old GM variant)new seat controlsremote infrared locking system The bad: Burns some oil as these versions tend to do but does not affect driveability or smogging. See my reference above on this. I've come to see it as the nature of the beast. That goes for the famous 4.2 front low pressure return head gasket oil leak also which every one of these seems to have but is not noticeable to most owners unless they are in the know. Audi didn't fix this all through the A8 production run until the 2000 series cars. This engine is the same engine as the 97 through 99 A8 with the exception of the coil packs. Only noticeable smoke is when the accelerator is stomped on. Does not smoke at idle. I saw no smoke recently when the 2500 rpm high speed smog test was run for several minutes. This is my third V8 Q and they have all burned oil to some extent or the other. I tend to drive 75 on the freeway so that may be a contributing factor. Slight pull to right that no one has ever found out why because everything seems to be as it should be. Brake light on which is likely the sensor malfunctioning because there is absolutely nothing wrong with the braking system Back driver's side window regulator just stopped working; they do that eventually. All others work. Cruise control doesn't work (not on my other either); it's the module under the dash I haven't tackled Passenger speaker/amp unit not working and therefore the Bose system doesn't. I may have one to provide, not sure will have to check Slight paint scuffing under left side lower bumper on far left side underneath, couple of door dings (very small, you have to look); I had part of the hood repainted to eliminate nicks on the front trailing edge of the hood from small rock exposures on the road over time. Minor ding right on top of sunroof the size of an eraser head. Some of the rubber molding in some places around the headlights is deteriorated and a couple of pieces have broken off. Ding on right front quarter panel you can see if the light hits it right. 25% tire tread left on the Michelins. Gas mileage is less than stellar; you always hear these owners talking about how they get great gas mileage but believe me they don't. Both my V8s get the same 15 or so in city. The only time it can shine here is if you do straight highway miles without any streets whatsoever and for some reason you can max out at 21.5 if you're careful. There is a slight rattle sound from the front of the car when it's running. It's a consistent sound and after much analysis and 3 timing belt changes in a row it's most likely the oil pump outer bearing which can be changed during a timing belt service but never is thought of apparently. The dealership wasn't able to identify it and they brought in their regional expert to look at it and he thought it was the water pump so we did the whole timing belt service over and obviously it wasn't that. I found another Audi master tech who had come across this in a couple of 1997 A8 models he worked on and that is what it was. All the tensioners and rollers and all else were replaced during the timing belt changes (3 in 5 months trying to identify this). It's been the way it is ever since, not more or less. They all tend to make some of this noise but this one is more noticeable. NOTE: this car was purchased new outside of California. For some reason, this year (at least on my vehicle) does not have a standard "check engine" light. If you look at the factory manual wiring diagram it shows the light is not connected except for CA cars. Some Mitchell or other manuals used by smog stations may not show this. The car smogs fine however and in this car there is a "catalyst" warning light. For the sake of full disclosure I am mentioning this. Please do not bid if you have the slightest concern about this. Sellers rarely in my experience tell the full story, but I'm telling it straight because I believe only a car person should buy this particular vehicle anyway. This is not a car for a "drive it till it drops person". These cars require some attention, but if you take are of them, will provide a great driving experience. These cars were very advanced for their time and still are in many ways. The quattro all wheel drive system is unsurpassed and remarkably trouble free. One very big advantage of buying this car from me is that I have two parts cars and a lot of new parts and a lot of knowledge I am happy to share with the new owner. Ask questions before bidding. Shipping is up to you to arrange entirely. You are encouraged to fly in and look at the car. I cannot make a block of time available in my schedule to wait for a transporter who may or may not arrive on time. No international bidders. Sale is final. It is understood this is a 20 year old car and not perfect and the buyer accepts that. There is no warranty or expectation implied. All components on this car are stock.
