A new fifth generation of BMW’s midsize 5 Series sedan arrives for the 2004 model year. It has grown a bit in size and presents a fresh but familiar “new look.” Mounted on a wheelbase that’s 2.3 inches longer than its predecessor, the rear-wheel-drive 545i is 2.6 inches longer overall, 1.8 inches wider and 1.3 inches taller. Space in the rear has been increased, and the automaker says entry into the backseat is easier. Trunk capacity has grown by 26 percent. With keeping weight down in mind, a new all-aluminum front-end structure is used. Rather than the 4.0-liter V-8 that powered the previous 540i sedan, the new 545i four-door gets a 4.4-liter V-8 engine that develops 325 horsepower, which is 35 hp more than before. Equipped with a Valvetronic system, the V-8 engine first appeared in BMW’s larger 7 Series. The automaker’s 5 Series is also available in two other forms: the 525i, which is equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-six-cylinder engine, and the 3.0-liter six-cylinder-powered 530i. The 545i sedan comes with either a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and luxury-oriented equipment or a six-speed-manual gearbox and Sport equipment.
