Vehicle Detail
1953 Mercury Monterey Coupe Shaved, Decked, Frenched, Nosed Customized - Big Block - A/C You are viewing a privately owned 1953 Custom Mercury Monterey Coupe. Classic Cars Online is helping the owner with the presentation and listing of this fine vehicle. You will be purchasing this vehicle directly from him. The restoration/transformation was completed in the late 1990's. They started with a very solid Florida vehicle and ended with one great looking custom ride. Here is some back ground on the car and it's owner. The current owner is an older gentleman that isn't able to give the vehicle the attention it needs. He purchased this vehicle 9 plus years ago from the person that did the customization. This is not one of those "Out of the Box" "Trailer Queen" custom cars. It will need some detailing, cleaning, and a little tinkering to make it perfect. That in mind, the reserve price isn't set at $40k or $30k or even $20k. It is priced to move and would make a great car to just get in and enjoy know. It would need nothing to have fun this summer with. Please read and view all of the 108 pictures listed in the photo gallery. Click on each picture to make them larger. Would you buy a car on eBay with four pictures and one paragraph of description? NO. That is why at Classic Cars Online, our listings will go over and show every area of the vehicle that is up for auction. Bid with confidence! Description! Body & Paint: This project was started with solid body and then was "Shaved," "Decked," "Nosed," and "Frenched." The Monterey stainless steel side trim was removed. (Original trim will go along with the vehicle.) After the vehicle was painted "Mulberry Red," hand painted pin stripping/grafics were added to give the car a true custom look. It is holding up very well, it's not checking, cracking, or fading. The paint has the typical small stone chips and marks. (All can be easily touched-up.) There is one small bubble starting on the bottom of the driver's door. (See close up photo #90) The rear fender skirts are steel. Each door has a solenoid/popper that unlocks and pops open the doors. (Button is in front wheel well.) The passengers door solenoid works but doesn't open the door. (Use inside handle) Chrome & Trim: The chrome bumpers are in good shape but there are a few areas that are dull and would need re-chroming. The lower half of the front bumper was painted with "Argent Silver." The trailer hitch can be removed easily, but there would be a hole in the center of the rear bumper. The word "Mercury" stamped into the rear bumper is very faint. The two exterior chrome spot lights are "Dummies" as well as side chrome exhaust "Lake Pipes." Interior: The interior is done in gray velour. It is in very good condition with no rips, holes, stains, or marks. The front seat is power. The door panels, and the headliner are also in great shape. The interior chrome/stainless trim items are all original and show their age. Most of these pieces would clean up and look a lot better with a little elbow grease and cleaning. The dash was painter and pin stripped to match the exterior. It has a factory radio that is not connected and an after market radio in the glove box which may or may not work. (Never used it.) The under dash "Mercury" air conditioning is another item that was never used. All of the A/C parts are there and the compressor kicks on when the unit is turned on. It may need a charge or have a small leak. Engine Compartment: Sitting under the of this beauty is a 402ci.in. big block Chevy engine. (Unsure of year on engine.) The engine compartment hasn't been detailed for a while. With a little time cleaning and wiping down, this compartment would look a lot better. Missing a horn. See the "Mechanical" section for more information on this drive train. Trunk Compartment: Again, this area hasn't been detailed. It has black carpet on the floor and velour side panels that match the interior. The underside of the deck lid also have the same material. There is no spare tire or jack. The battery is located in the trunk and is in good condition. There are no signs for any patch panels or repairs. Wheels & Tires: All four P205/75R15 whitewall tires are in good shape. The hubcaps have a "fifties" look to them with a chrome coned center piece. Glass: All of the glass on this vehicle is original except for the windshield. They have the correct markings and logos. The windshield has one or two small wiper marks that can be easily buffed out. The side windows roll down and up with ease and have no problems. Frame & Undercarriage: According to a past owner, the car was once from Florida. As you can see in the undercarriage photos, is it very clean and solid. The frame doesn't have any scale/flaky rust, pit markings, repairs, and/or weak areas. The owner doesn't know and doesn't think any of the original sheet metal pans/panels were ever replaced. Nine times out of ten, people selling a car would not talk about or take any photos of the underside. The undercarriage tells you a lot about the car, that is why there are a few pictures of the bottom in the photo gallery. Please view them all. Mechanical: Engine/Transmission/Rear End: This 402cu.in. Chevy Big Block runs great. It doesn't smoke, tick, or leak. It was rebuilt when the car was modified. Bolted to this power plant is a Turbo 400 automatic transmission with a mild shift kit. There are no problems with the transmission. The speedometer/odometer cable is not connected. I think it has something to due with a Mercury cable connecting to a GM transmission. (Fitting) It has a 8" Mustang rear end that works great. (Not sure of the ratio or if it's "Posi" or not.) With this drive train setup, the vehicle gets up and goes. Under minimal acceleration, it will "Chip" the tires out of first gear. Harder acceleration, it will "Chip" the tires from every gear. Strong! Brakes: Power Brakes. Disc in the front, drums in the rear. No known problems. They do not pulsate, fade, pull or make any noise. Suspension: Under the front of this car, there is a '71 Nova "Sub Frame." The rear has a "8 Mustang setup. The ride is nice without any rattles and does not shake, bounce, vibrate, or pull to one side. It does have rear air shocks but the boots on these shocks now have a leak in them. (Will not hold air, but the car still sits nice with the correct look to it.) It has Power Steering as well. Exhaust: Dual exhaust from the headers to the chrome tips out the rear. No leaks or known problems with the exhaust system. Reserve Price: * Please don't ask what the "Reserve Price" is, or if we have a "Buy it Now" price.
