Vehicle Detail
Very rare, Factory Built, 1947 Chrysler, 7 passenger, Windsor Limousine with Chauffeur seat and original, roll-up, divider window and very rare Overdrive Fluid Drive transmission. One of only a handful known to exist. If Chrysler can identify through their records, who the car was delivered to new, it might be of serious value or significance. This entire limousine is completely original as it left Chrysler in 1947. Nothing has been modified or altered or replaced. Upholstery, dash, paint, engine, chassis all are from 1947. I have the history from 1956 till today and the 1956 Oregon title. There were only 750 Chrysler Imperial limousines made from 1946- 1948 and even fewer Windsor limousines with the factory divider window, this is what makes this car so special. The entire divider section is in excellent condition with all the parts intact, working and not rusted or broken. In fact, the best piece of glass in the entire car is the roll up divider window, it is perfect without any blemishes, and rolls up and down effortlessly. This divider section is framed in wood and the wood is not rotten, and the custom divider window garnish moulding is in original navy blue paint like all the other moldings. The divider section is covered in the original navy blue broadcloth wool, still in tact for patterns. There is even a very neat pair of wool broadcloth flaps with brass zipper, which hang down over the rear jump seats when they are stowed away. There are many accessories which came with this limousine: - roll up divider window- chrome air vents from front cab to rear section- Overdrive transmission- back up light with original dash switch- chauffeur area dome light with switch- chauffeur/limousine only leather front seat- trailer hitch- radiator screen- coil- Mopar AM radio- clock- Mopar comfortmaster heater- cast accessory front license plate bracket- white wall tires All of the paint is original from 1947. The car has had no accidents or repair work. There are no dents at all on the body, however it has rust. This is the only major negative to the car. Fortunately, all of the limousine-only pieces are there which will make the restoration much easier. Most of the floor and trunk has been covered with a rust stabilizer similar to POR 15. All upholstery is in tact to use as patterns so there will be no guessing as to how to correctly restore this limousine. In fact, I pulled back the leather to see the original stamped Good Year seat padding dated 1948. There is rust in the floors, bottom edges of the doors, front splash pan in front of the radiator, the battery holder and the trunk, however the chassis/frame has no rust, its all very solid. The front floor area has a large removable access panel which will need replacing but there is no welding involved, it just bolts in, and this panel is currently reproduced and available on ebay too. The majority of the back seat floor section is still solid but the door sills are rusted and will need to be replaced. The trunk is rusted out but this section is not specific to a limousine so a regular sedan trunk area could be cut out and welded in. It will need a fuel tank. The sides of the trunk fender wells appear to be solid, so this will make for an easier patch panel repair. The rocker moulding, both left and right are original and for the limousine. The drivers side has a couple dents which can be removed by a polisher/plater, but the important thing is that they are complete limo length and with no rips or breaks in them. All the stainless trim is in very nice condition with the two front hood pieces missing and the rear right short piece which are the same on any of the 46-48 Chryslers. The special rear door moldings are in very nice condition. The front and rear bumpers are in nice shape with decent chrome. The center front bumper guard is missing. The front grill is also in nice shape with only minor pitting. The 6 pieces of wrap around "whisker moulding" are all very nice with minimal pitting. They are not cracked or warped which is common, they fit the contour of both front fenders nicely as would be from an original un-wrecked car. All 4 white walls are in like-new condition and have very few miles on them. They even have the tubes as originally equipped. The car only has 3 hubcaps and 3 original trim rings. The hubcaps are easily found here on ebay. You are better served finding the nicest 6 cylinder hubcaps right here on ebay to re-chrome since a plating shop will have a very difficult time peeling off the outer chrome skin to remove any dings. The interior is all original. The front seat is still covered (barely) in its original black leather for the chauffeur. All of the upholstery needs to be redone in the car. There is no headliner but all of the headliner bows are still in place. The rear floor area originally would have been covered in hogs hair carpet and there are a couple decent original pieces for patterns. The rear armrests were wood covered and are complete with the both ashtrays. The jump seats have polished, cast-aluminum hinge hardware and are in nice condition. The blue broadcloth has holes and seams coming apart, but offers good patterns. Only one of the door panels remains on the door but the stainless, decorative trims for the other doors go with the car. The two original Chrysler front door panel arm rests are still on the doors and not broken. The rear doors have both "flipper" handles in good condition. Expect to replace all the glass except the divider window and rear window. In fact, all the other glass is flat so a regular glass shop can cut them. The ones on the car are either cracked or fogged up. There is enough glass with the doors to make patterns. All four window regulators work well. The engine is the matching number spitfire 6 cylinder Chrysler motor it was delivered with in 1947. It has all the correct parts, air cleaner, mopar generator, auto lite voltage regulator and starter and correct carburetor with linkage. Amazingly the manifold is NOT cracked, they always seem to be broken, especially the 8 cylinder ones. It also has an unusual accessory coil. The best part of the limo is that is has a factory overdrive with all the components. Nobody has removed any of the linkage or electrical components. It still has the bracket and pull knob on the dash to engage it, nothing has been removed. I don't know if it works. In fact I do not know if the engine runs either. I removed the plugs and soaked the pistons but I don't have a large enough socket to see if the motor turns over. As of the listing, I haven't tried it, so bid on the car with the worst case scenario that the motor doesn't run, and if I get it to turn over before the end of the auction then thats a bonus. The engine still has the original honeycomb radiator which are very hard to find, since they are always replaced with the fin type. The radiator does not have any rot at the bottom too. It also has an accessory bug screen attached to the front. There is also only one horn on the driver's side, but the passenger side does have the bracket and wiring. These horns also come up on ebay now and again for little money. I do know the history of the car back to 1956. Also, all of the divider window limousines were delivered to significant clients. I was told that Chrysler has those documents. I also know that the limo was used at the university of Oregon from 1959-1964 at which time it was parked. The car came form the estate of the late Mr. Fields, and I do have the 1956 Oregon Certificate of Title still in his name; in fact it was issued 55 years ago last week. The Oregon license plates on the car are from 1956 and were titled through 1963. The University decals are still on the bumper. I sure wish I knew who had it from 1947 till 1956! The car is sold as is with no warranty. You are welcome to come inspect the car in person during the auction. Its stored in San Fernando, 30 minutes north of downtown Los Angeles. If you would like additional photos, I can email you them. If you can not see it in person but have questions, I can go over the car on the phone with you. Sorry, there are no keys with the car. A $750 deposit must be paid within 72 hours of the close of the auction. The balance must be paid within 7 days of the close of the auction. Email me with any questions BEFORE the end of the auction, if you win it you buy it, simple. The car is for sale locally and I have the right to end the auction early. No zero feedback bidders. I can help arrange shipping or loading the car, but shipping payment is your responsibility. You will have 14 days from the close of the auction to pick up the limo. On Jul-11-11 at 20:16:35 PDT, seller added the following information: ATTN: This limousine is a Windsor 6 cylinder not a New Yorker. I couldn't change the automated "vehicle type" heading in the initial description.
