I Purchased this car, plus 2 other cars a few years ago at a Storage Rental Auction. (you know the places that have rows and rows of different garage units) It was a sealed bid auction and the description I was given by a man that worked there was vague, (he was one of my customers who called me because I owned a Towing Company, he thought that I might be interested) he told me "there are 3 cars, a mid 90's t-bird that looked nice, a big old Oldsmobile boat and a old 4 door ford". it ended up that I was the high bidder and I paid $750 each for all 3 vehicles site unseen... I sent one of my drivers with a check, he picked up the paperwork and towed the cars back to my shop one at a time and when I figured out what I had purchased I flipped out. a 64 Olds 442, (this is one of those stories I always wished would happen to me). I mean we opened the hood and there sat a big old high performance V8, with no carburetor, I automatically started to think, (maybe it had a blown motor) and thats why the past owner did not pay his storage fees for 6 months. The Oldsmobile had 4 flat junk tires with different types of rims on it, the interior and trunk were both full of scattered clothes, shoes, toys, junk... it also had a clutch pedal on the floor not connected, but it had a automatic transmission with a B & M shifter, and just one single exhaust. (not the duel, a 442 should have). It was kinda depressing because in 1964, the 442 stood for: (4) Barrel Carburetor, (4) speed Transmission and (2) Duel Exhaust! (maybe its not a 442 ?) I had my driver drop the Olds in the very back of the shop, (over time) a few people noticed it and made offers, I refused an offer of $2400 on it because I was going to restore this old muscle car for myself. (I knew what it would be worth done!) Take a Good LOOK at the Pictures Before and After Then it happened, I got sick and went into the hospital for many weeks, diabetes took my health and I have not been able to kick it and I have been stuck in bed. the bills are overwhelming so now everything is for sale. So last month I had my guys tow out (the 442 want-a-be) and clean out all the junk and see if we can find parts to get it up for sale, they found some body trim in the trunk and a 4 barrel carburetor all wrapped in a old shirt. My men took off all the different type rims and put on a set of aluminum rims w/tires (nothing special just to move around) a they took the carburetor cleaned it up and rebuilt it, installed it, poured a couple gallons of gas in the tank, primed it it started up, (Oh my GOD it sounded so good I could hear it from my room) then they put in gear and drove it around our lot. the exhaust was leaking alittle but WOW it made my day. The Vehicle Identification Number is 824M088164, I found out a few things about it. the first digit is for the Engine and 8 stands for (V-8 Engine). I also found that in 64 they installed a 330 high performance engines... the second digit is for Series Code, 2 stands for (F85 Cutlass). digit number three stand for Model Year and 4 is (1964) the forth digit stand for Assembly Plant Code and M = (Lansing, MI) and the last six digits are Production number (sequence) Here is what we believe to know so far: it is a 330 high performance V-8, The factory series code in the second VIN# it is a Cutlass F-85 (but it has the 442 badges on the trunk & fenders), the other thing we found out is the factory produced a bunch of police cruisers in that year, that were 330, Automatic Single exhaust. So this could be the case. No I don't think so! (see Confused below) it is a 1964 and it was made in Lansing, Michigan. It has a factory install clutch pedal still there, It has a Maine State Inspection Sticker on the Windshield of March 2003, Someone put a after market AM/FM Cassette Stereo in it and cut the front door panels and the back deck cover to put in big over sized speakers in the car. they also put air shocks on the back after market door mirrors, they filled in the side panel trim holes w/putty and spray patted door handle (missing one) and locks. other than that it looks original... it needs new door handles and a few minor items = I would put on the inside door handles and few trim pieces (they in the trunk). Confused with the; Standard Clutch pedal still attached to the floor board (was it originally a 4 speed standard and someone changed it over to auto or a Auto that was changed over from a standard) and the Steering Column has a place on the side for a shift lever, but we have a B & M shifter on the floor between the seats, along with with the B & M transmission pan that usually come with high performance shift kit. (someone might have changed the 4 speed standard to a automatic or Had a automatic changed the shift lever from the column to the floor and then started to change it to standard by adding a clutch pedal)???? OK I'm still confused... Here is what I think... This car was a original 442 from the the factory... it has a factory installed clutch pedal still in the car, it looks like someone changed the steering column to an automatic, change the transmission to automatic and later took the lever off the column, decided to add the B & M floor shifter. somewhere along the way the duel exhaust was changed to a single exhaust. yes a 442 Muscle Car.That is just my opinion after months of research. it seems if you ask ten different 442 experts, you get ten different answers, so I formed my own. What You See is What You GET. All in all since I purchased the car, we put a matching set on aluminum rims & tires on the it, also though out the junk and washed & vacuumed the interior, sanded down the whole car did some minor body work on the rear quarter and front fender primed & painted it flat black (we figured who ever the new owner was would want to paint it their own color) we have not done anything underside except inspect what we had, there are some surface rust and a few small rust holes (but the car is over 47 years old) the frame looks solid, the rocker panels are both solid, there are little helper gadgets on the rear springs and air shocks, but nothing serious in our opinion. we cleaned and rebuilt the carb, cleaned and tightened the valve covers (which seemed to leak alittle oil) the brake seem spongy, and other than the fact that we took some pictures to get it for sale.
