Vehicle Detail
Before i give you any other details about this bike I have to say it is THE best sounding 8-valve bike I've ever worked on. The Vance and Hines pipe carefully jetted, a slight enlargement of the carb slides' vacuum holes (to lift the needle jet a little quicker in transition from pilot circuit) combine to make the engine emit the most fully-sick, mellifluous sound you're likely to hear on a motorcycle. (Don't want to send anybody to the dictionary so I'll advise that mellifluous means 'sweet sounding, flowing like honey'). This bike is just plain ear-pleasing. I was filling her up the other night and a guy came over to me and says 'just let me hear that thing again!'THIS BIKE CAME FROM AN OH ESTATE WITH ONLY A BILL OF SALE WHICH IS THE WAY I WILL SELL THE BIKE. (Before I realized I wasn’t going to get a title from the estate, we did a typical Akron Suzuki Works make over of this classic--btw, it runs like a goosed-moose and is completely issue free). IF LACK OF A TITLE IS A PROBLEM FOR YOU DO NOT BID BUT CONSIDER THAT YOU CAN GET A TITLE FOR $400 +/- FROM VARIOUS SOURCES BUT I DOUBT YOU COULD GET A FULLY-SORTED LOW MILE GS1100GL FOR TWICE THE ASK ON THIS BIKE. THIS IS THE MOST POPULAR MODEL THAT WE DEAL WITH HERE AT AKRON SUZUKI WORKS AND I TYPICALLY WOULD GET $4000 FOR ONE THIS NICE. 1982 GS1100 GL, low original miles, completely sorted out and ready to ride cross county right as she sits. NOTE: since I first listed the bike I have swapped out the ridiculous 'wheel barrel' bars that are still shown in the first couple pics for a nice set of very comfortable bars with less rise and more spread than stock and I added a nice set of pro grips which are thinner and have a nice tacky feel. These bars are shown in the last picture. Sorry for any confusion. Here’s the details of the auction bike and its make over: · 8-valve, shaft drive, clean example · Vance and Hines 4 into 1 header (reduces weight about 25 lbs) · New stock air filter · Rebuilt rear master cylinder · Replaced rear brake pads, rebuilt front and rear calipers · Carbs rebuilt and jetted to pipe, choke pick-ups drilled, low speed idle set and vacuum synched on bike for instant cold weather starting and quick warm up. · Valves adjusted, cam plugs replaced, cam box resealed · New fork seals, suspension balanced front to rear · New throttle and clutch cables, nice original seat · Steering races serviced · New front and rear Dunlop 5 series rain tires (these are a vast improvement over the old ‘raised white letter’ Dunflops) · Original tank (rust free interior) and side covers showing very nicely with no broken tabs, original 2-tone blue paint in very nice conditionWe also rewired and re-grouned the charging system to get it right on spec and cleaned up a few typical wiring issues while we were in there. All lights, indicators, horn, signals, etc work as expected. This bike will pass any state inspection for roadworthiness and safety. The odometer shows 4500 and is functioning normally, we’d guess it’s more like 10k actual—still low miles but as with a lot of Ohio bikes, this one obviously spent more time in the back of a garage than on the road. This bike runs considerably better than the average 8-valve 1100 with very accessible midrange and a nice surge around 6000 rpm to the redline. It sounds very authoritative with the aftermarket pipe—loud enough to be heard in traffic but not so loud as to piss off the neighbors! COULD BE A GREAT RAT BIKE OR THE MOTHER OF ALL PARTS BIKES! My shop typically gets $200 for a full carb overhaul and re-jet. A very nice original tank and matching side covers goes for $350 and up. A very good 1100 motor (with polished cases and new gaskets no less) should bring at least $750. So just the parts value on this bike ought to approach $2K. As they say in Chicago about voting “bid early and often”. john
