Vehicle Detail

The Best of Both Worlds: Porsche 911 America Roadster Tribute! Porsche's model Nine-Eleven needs no lengthy introduction: blessed with a timeless design, it's easily the most recognized sports car on the planet. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sure, Coupes and Targas look nice, but there's nothing cooler than a topless Porsche! Unfortunately, the factory waited almost two decades before offering a convertible 911. Among the air-cooled droptops, none perhaps possesses more cachet than the 1992 America Roadster, of which only 250 examples were manufactured. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The fantastic Porsche presented here, VIN *9112111514* has been a labor of love for its previous two owners. Based on a 1972 Porsche 911T chassis, it's a breathtaking tribute to the super rare 1992 Porsche America Roadster, which essentially was a Turbo-Look Cabrio with a normally aspirated engine. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A California resident since new, the car lived most of its life in dry Silicone Valley. According to the present owner, more than $30,000.00 was spent initially to transform this rust free 911 to America Roadster specs, not counting untold hours of unpaid labor. The car comes with a stack of 38 receipts detailing upgrades and maintenance during the past four years, totalling an additional $13,849.82. Apart from regular servicing, the rear shocks, master cylinder and clutch assembly have been replaced recently, heater system and suspension were rebuilt, an 'Elephant Racing' front oil cooler was added, new leather seats were installed, as well as a set of custom-made, 17-inch FUCHS wheels. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's now inspect this Porsche in more detail, starting with the trunk. Gray Josef-Beuys-memorial felt carpeting looks fresh; let's remove it and look underneath, for the vulnerable "nose section" offers a quite accurate picture of the overall health of any given 911. Note front strut brace. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view After removing the N.O.S. spare, we are gazing at the perfectly rust and wrinkle free front pan. Yes, we are certain: this car has never been in a fender bender and has never been attacked by the notorious rust devil! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Coachwork has been updated with great care and looks simply stunning. Car features the iconic wide stance; steel turbo-flared fenders did the trick. Late-model thermoplastic bumpers--with integrated fog lights up front--add the finishing touch. Convertible top closes with power assist, rear 3.6 spoiler is also power-operated. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Black Sonnendeck canvas roadster top can only be described as like new. Rear window is unmarked. Matching black canvas convertible boot is in equally mint condition and fits perfectly. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Guards Red finish was applied with great care (and expense). Apart from a few minuscule blems on the exposed front bumper, virtually unavoidable if you drive your Porsche at all, there are no bubbles, scratches, nicks, chips, dents, dings, or any other imperfections that would cause an enthusiast sleepless nights. Note late-model exterior mirrors and third brake light. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The iconic FUCHS alloys, integral part of the classic 911 look. The factory made them in 14", 15" and 16" sizes. These are 17s, 8-inch wide up front and 9 inch wide in the back. Say what? Yep, this set of Seventeens was professionally engineered by TRUDESIGN, at great expense! Tires are excellent radials of the dimension 224/45 ZR17 up front, 265/40 ZR 17 out back. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Quite a bit of thought (and a stack of Dollar bills) was expended to make the car's passenger compartment as exciting as its exterior. Let's take a closer look at this immaculately clean cockpit! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Carrera RS-style door panels with red pull straps continue the lightweight RS theme. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Porsche's cockpit emphasizes a very desirable racing ambiance. Traditional, white-on-black gauges with red pointers are fully functional, cannot possibly be improved upon. 911's interior design is truly ageless! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash top presents itself in superb condition, free of warping and hairline cracks. Black Feintuft carpeting with black piping looks new. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Leather-covered MOMO sport steering wheel, alloy MOMO grid floor mats and perforated, brushed aluminum floor boards, MOMO shift knob and the amazing-looking--and fun-to-operate--gated shifter add a few welcome sporting touches. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Porsche has been fitted with a pair of pristine, black leather S53 MRC Racing seats which constitute a perfect compromise between high performance and comfort. SPARCO 4-point belts for driver and passenger complete the breathtaking picture. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we leave, let's have a look at engine compartment and undercarriage! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Residing inside a toothbrush clean engine bay is a bullet-proof 3.0-liter SC of 1980 vintage. With its BOSCH K-Jetronic fuel injection as well as sensible upgrades such as Carrera chain tensioners, 11-blade fan, MSD ignition, and a fenderwell-mounted, HD oil cooler, this engine has benefitted tremendously in the performance and longevity departments. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The sexy six runs very strong, indeed. She doesn't smoke or drink oil and doesn't need a diaper, either, as she doesn't leak a drop of the black gold . . . Almost all vintage Porsches suffer from the ravages of corrosion--not so this one! 39-year-old underbelly proudly displays its original factory finish, has never needed rust repair; nor was there ever a need to muck about with spray-on undercoating. This is truly as good as it gets and speaks volumes about the car's dry California heritage. Note bright red rear race eye/jack point. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Silky red car cover looks like it was purchased at Victoria's Secret. Owner drove his 911 only on sunny Sunday afternoons, kept it waxed and covered inside his climate-controlled garage virtually all of the time. Time for us to take her out for a spin! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Wednesday, June 15, was another sunny and mild California spring day and we decided to head for New Age enclave Ojai to excercise the 911 and have a light lunch. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Car starts, idles, runs, and drives outstandingly well. The perfectly lowered suspension includes WELTMEISTER steering rack spacers to keep everything level. A 4-wheel electronic alignment has just been performed and the car seems glued to the tarmac. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Known for its light weight, the early 911, here combined with a smooth, fuel-injected engine pumping out as much HP as the vaunted "S" motor, yearns to be flung through the twisties. It is a true driver's Porsche, not a bloated, gizmo-laden douchemobile. The trumpeting music emanating from the stock exhaust above 4,500rpm is seductive, the perfectly dialed in Type 915 five-speed transmission and suspension are addictive. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home, we are all smiles. This "America Roadster" is by far the most bang for the buck we've experienced in a long time! Fully sorted, it goes as good as is looks, it's smog exempt due to its early build date, it's eligible for most reasonable classic car insurance, and--if need be--it still can be worked on with hand tools instead of diagnostic computers. Truly, it's the Best of Both Worlds! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not too often will the opportunity arise to acquire another man's cherished toy, and save thousands, no, tens of thousands, in the process.
