Vehicle Detail
One Year Only: 1970 MGB Roadster! There's something special about a classic British Roadster. Minimalist in design, it provides a maximum amount of driving pleasure. No check engine lights triggered by intractable electronic gizmos, no shockingly high repair bills. Here, rugged simplicity is the recipe for pure, unadulterated fun. Besically, the rear license plate was relocated to a lower position, and the bumper halves themselves now contained the license plate lights. This modification might have been performed heeding to pending government regulations or purely cosmetic, however, after the 1970 model year, the prior design was re-introduced for the remainder of the chrome bumper MGB's production run, thus creating a "one year only" model. Amazingly, it still wears both its 1970-issue, blue-and-gold California license plates, like badges of honor. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Having resided in the Golden State all its life, the car escaped the dreaded rust devil. There are no bubbles, holes, or other signs of corrosion anywhere, not even on the notoriously fragile door sills, dog legs, and lower front fenders. The car features a nicely patinated--but still very glossy--coat of Primrose paint, wich looks great for a "driver." Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Originally, this purebred Roadster was British Racing Green. Since it received just a superficial color change to the exterior, a repaint in the original color would be super easy, as engine compartment, trunk, interior, and even the undercarriage still display their factory BRG paint. Or, leave it as is, and still reap compliments on a daily basis! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Bee comes with full weather equiment. We just had a brand new, black convertible top expertly installed by Maestro Martin of Gold Coast Upholstery here in Ventura. There's also a neat tonneau, covering the rear area when the top's down. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Clean and stock-looking engine bay houses MG's best vesion of the bullet-proof 1800cc engine, producing 95 stout horsepower. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not yet choked by emissions equipment, the engine runs strong, with great oil pressure, and no bad habits such as (oil) drinking or smoking to report. This MG has always been kept up mechanically, and it shows; among many new parts, a new front wiring harness was installed a while ago. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view A true British roadster has to wear a set of spoke wheels. The extremely attractive, perfectly powder-coated knock-off wheels complement this B in superb fashion. They are shod with close-to-new radial tires of the size 185/70-14 all around. Let's have a look inside now! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Emanating the atmosphere of a fighter jet, MGB's recessed instrument cluster is a feast for the eyes. We are fond of the lovingly cared-for look of this cockpit, and we love the fact that the original radio block-off plate is still in place: a genuine British Roadster doesn't need tunes; the mechanical sounds, rushing wind, and roar of its exhaust provide excitement enough! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) All gauges, lights and switches work as intended; there are no LUCAS wiring gremlins! Even the horn honks, all three windshield wipers wipe, and the heater delivers hot air on demand. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The original black bucket seats that are well very well-preserved, indeed. Thankfully, the prior owner extracted the carpet sections covering the floors and replaced them with removeable mats, thus preventing floorboard rot caused by the presence of perennially damp, glued-in carpet backing material. Black door panels look great, glass and chrome are in fine condition. This MG is an unrestored automobile that has been allowed to age gracefully. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but let's first check out trunk and undercarriage! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Trunk is dry and rust free. Orignal BRG paint still peeks through a thin layer of flat black. Note original jack and matching, powder-coated spare. From the frog's perspective, we get a good, close look at the car's underbelly. This one has never needed corrosion or accidend repair, nor has it been the victim of senseless mucking around with non-factory paint or undercoating. Forty-one years after it was born, it's as pure, dry and clean as can be. This is what buying a rust free California car is all about: you will not have to worry about structural repairs! Noticee the quite expensive, newly installed stainless steel exhaust system! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) How does a 30 year-old MGB drive? Wonderfully indeed, just like you would expect it from a purebred British Roadster. On a typically mild, late spring afternoon here in Ventura, we happily stowed the top and lowered the wind-up side windows, and went for a spirit-lifting ride. There is no bad weather, anyway, just inappropriate clothes for the occasion, and the Brits would not dream of erecting the hood, unless caught in the midst of a torrential downpour. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Pull the choke, turn the ignition key, and the engine rumbles to life with a throaty exhaust note. Quite nimble, the MG responds instantaneously to the driver's input, makes tackling twisty canyon roads fun. Loaf along in a relaxed fashion or apply the spurs and turn the "B" into a snarling, balls-out pocket rocket. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Coil spring suspension is firm but comfortable; rack-and-pinion steering direct. The brakes--discs in front--anchor the light car with authority. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home, we are all smiles. This little car truly punches way above its class; it's perhaps the best-driving B we've ever had the pleasure to own. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not a show car or trailer queen, this MGB is a rock solid, rust free vintage automobile that is ready to be driven and enjoyed, just the way it is. It would love to find a new master who appreciates an unrestored original with character. It's as comfortable to own and as easy to love as that favorite old tweed jacket with the leather elbow patches. If you're looking for a "B" to cherish and actually drive, perhaps none would be more deserving than this one-year-only, split-bumper example!
