Vehicle Detail

Tired of paying through the nose for fuel? Then this is the car for you! You are bidding on a 2002 Volkswagen Golf GLS TDI. This is one of the “original” TDIs with an EPA rating of 42 city/49 highway mpg (later versions have far lower estimates). Over the past nine years, I have averaged 40-44mpg in the city and 47-53mpg on the highway (depending on the load). I bought this car new and am responsible for all 108k miles on it. I have records for all service – all maintenance has been performed by VW dealers or licensed VW mechanics (with fantastic reviews on CarTalk’s website) – so it has a new timing belt, fuel pump, brakes, updated engine software… you name it, the maintenance has been done. This car has every option except for an automatic transmission. So it has: · 5-sp manual · Power windows (one-touch up and down on both driver and front passenger windows) · Automatic and power door locks · Air conditioning · Cruise control · Monsoon stereo · Sunroof · 15-inch alloys · Heated mirrors and washer nozzles · Heated seats Those heated seats are too much in this 90+ degree weather, but in the winter there is nothing better! The Monsoon stereo system has a CD changer in the trunk, but I also installed iPod connectivity – the connection is through the “ashtray” in front of the gear shift (see pictures – I don’t smoke, so it made sense to put that space to a better use). I am also including the VW-branded ski rack and its tools to connect it to the car. You can see slowly-degrading protection pads on the roof of the car where the feet of the roof rack sit when it’s installed – these aren’t really noticeable from a distance, but there is a close-up picture. Those aren’t scratches, but adhesive pads. I recently bought new tires: Nokian WRG2 all around. These are all-season tires made in Finland and are, without a doubt, the greatest tires I’ve ever experienced. Snow, rain, dry weather – they are incredible (I got 63k miles on the last set… only 7k on this set so far). The Golf’s 15-inch size is also ideal – no real bragging rights, but the tires are far more affordable than larger sizes. Naturally, the car has ABS plus EIGHT airbags: driver, passenger, curtain front, and curtain rear. To personalize the car, I added GT TDI taillights from the European version, the gear knob from the German market-only Sport model, and Hella angel-eye headlights. In order to make those more effective, I have installed a European headlight switch, which allows normal headlight operation (the daytime running lights are “off,” but can easily be turned back on) in addition to an angel-eye function (in the “parking light” position). Despite these “go-faster” bits (including the little red T on TDI), there have been no changes to the electrical or engine management systems. It is still a standard Golf TDI underneath. As such, it’s a powerful, but not overly quick, car. It’s comfortable, good-looking, WAY FUN, and regularly returns incredible mileage. It’s built like a tank – the only time the car feels “small” is when you realize how awesome it is for driving in town and parking in tiny spaces. There are some issues that you should know about before bidding: · This car is nine years old. It has seen a lot of high way driving (from Atlanta to Arizona to Montana to Maine and everything in between – basically, everything but the West Coast) and it has lived the majority of its life on the street. As such, it has quite a few scratches and the bumpers have scuff marks from being bumped (see pictures). · Someone nicked the driver door mirror, so there are some scratches on that, too. · The passenger door had “intimate relations” with an Acura; the resulting dent was ugly, but only superficial. · The antenna’s rubber coating is degrading, so it looks ugly but still works perfectly. · The interior shows normal wear & tear for a 108k-mile car. Some of VW’s rubberized coating has peeled in some places (based on what I’ve seen, this is normal) and if you notice in the pictures, my heel has worn a hole in the floor mat. It’s truly an amazing little car. So, why am I selling it? Because I will be traveling overseas for the next two years working on my dissertation. I can’t very well take the car with me and a car like this does not want to sit around staring at the road when it could be – and should be – driving on it. Important: Terms & Conditions · This is a USED CAR and is being sold AS-IS. There is no warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. The above description is accurate to the best of my descriptive ability but should not be relied on in place of an inspection. I encourage your inspection BEFORE bidding.· This car carries all proper and clear documentation. It is owned solely by me and the safety inspection is valid in DC for another 15 months (required every two years in the District). · You are bidding on the car, NOT on the option of buying the car. Your bid is binding. Please do not bid unless you are ready to purchase this automobile. If you have any questions, please email me BEFORE making any bid. Payment · The winner will send a non-refundable $500 deposit via Paypal within 72 hours. The remainder of the balance is due within one week or when you collect the car, whichever occurs first. The remainder of the balance MUST be paid in cash or via cashier’s check/banker’s draft. No credit cards, no Paypal other than the deposit, no personal checks. · That last part is important so I’ll repeat it: The remainder of the balance MUST be paid in cash or via cashier’s check/banker’s draft. No credit cards, no Paypal other than the deposit, no personal checks. Shipping · The buyer is responsible for shipping, including all logistics. I will be available to help make sure the vehicle is loaded, but all shipping is solely the responsibility of the winner. I highly recommend that if you have the time, you collect the car in person; in fact, I encourage you to pick it up yourself and drive home. Drive this car with confidence – it’s comfortable, economical and reliable. If you choose this option, I will gladly pick you up at the airport or train station. It will probably save you money, too, even with insanely high fuel prices. Please email me via eBay if you have any questions or concerns. On Jun-13-11 at 05:21:03 PDT, seller added the following information:I was asked about the "intimate relations" with the Acura: There was a small dent on the front passenger door below the body molding. This was back in 2006. It was really shallow and the repair shop pulled it with a plunger in a matter of minutes. I didn't think to take pictures until it was already repaired.
