Vehicle Detail

1973 Volvo 1800ES Sport Wagon 62K original miles Fresh restoration 4spd, Overdrive, AC Up for bids is this terrific 1973 Volvo 1800ES.  Relatively rare, Volvo built these "Sport Wagons" over just a 2 year period; 1972-1973. ES values seem to have recently come into their own, here's an opportunity to own a show quality example.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car has had an exceptional repaint in its original color of Sea Green, code 115.  The paint was done by Tom Black's Garage, Tom has over 40 years of concours level paint experience, it shows when you look at this car.  All of trim was off the car, all of the glass removed, this paint presents very well.  The body panels are arrow straight, and of course no rust issues anywhere.  The undercarriage is likewise solid.  The car rides on a set of very rare ATE Volvo branded wheels, they have been bead blasted and powder coated.  The wheels are perfect, and that's a word I don't use freely. All of the trim on the car is original and in excellent condition.  The optional roof rack shows some slight pitting on the corner pedestals, otherwise you will find no pitting on any of the other chrome trim on this car.  Both bumpers have been rechromed by Oregon Plating with true triple-plate show chrome, they are flawless.  The center sections on these Volvo bumpers are actually stainless steel, they have been highly polished to a chrome appearance.   All 4 rubber bumper guards are new.  The Hella foglights are new with no chips or flaws. All signal lenses are in excellent condition.  The back hatch seal is new, the gutter is rust free and has clear drain holes with new drain tubing. Clean and crisp details everywhere you look on this car, right down to the gas cap.  All of the glass is good, the back hatch struts are in good shape.  The locking mechanism works just as it should.   The windshield and gasket are new, there's no substitute for the clarity of a new windshield!  Mirrors are original, wiper assemblies are original, the trim surround on the windshield is original to the car and in great shape. The front seats have been restored, otherwise this interior is all original, a testament to its low miles.  Carpet, door panels, dash pad, etc - all original.  The seats were recovered in leather by Guy's Interior Restorations here in Portland, they are excellent.  As with most Volvos, the seats offer good support and are very comfortable.     The carpet in this car has held up very well for being 38 years old, it's obvious the car has led a garaged life.  The door panels are in good shape, there is one small blem on the passenger side panel, otherwise they present very well.  The car has all new weatherstripping, every piece. The steering wheel is in good shape with no splits.  The center console compartment has a functioning lock and key.  The 4th photo below shows the small tear on the door panel. Both windows wind smoothly, the window felts and outer seals are new. The back seat, console, and seat belts are in good shape with no wear.  The seat folds down to create 28 square feet of cargo space.  It doesn't look like this car has done much heavy hauling, the carpet and headliner are in super condition. The rocker switches were a '73 only feature, all of them operate correctly.  The gauges are all working, even the clock.  All of the gauges show good readings; good oil pressure and cool operating temperatures.  The dash pads are both in good shape, there's a small split right in front of the steering column, otherwise the dash pads are looking good.  The heater and plenums work correctly, the AC system blows cool, not ice cold though, some freon will be needed in the future.  Lights, signals, horn, wipers, etc are all functioning correctly. At a glance, the underdash area may look like a bunch of jumbled wires, but if you look closely you'll see that this is all stock wiring, never messed with, no need to fix someone elses sloppy work.  The horsehair insulation on the firewall has held up very well over the years, not often the case in these cars. The cargo area also reflects the car's protective ownership, most examples show a lot of sun fading in this area.  The spare tire is an unused original Good Year whitewall, marked "Made in Sweden", still showing the blue coating on the whitewall.  Included is the factory jacking equipment, tool kit, and a 70's era road safety kit.  Also included with the car is the owners manual and a huge lot of VSA back issues. The car starts readily and runs out great.  The motor pulls strongly, the gearbox shifts smoothly, the ride is tight and responsive.  This car offers a good mix of sport and comfort, you definitely feel part of the driving process but without the harshness that some sports cars exhibit.  This Volvo has a nice comfortable ride, good visibility, good braking, and an overall feeling of solid reliability that is unique to Volvos. The undercarriage is solid and original with no rust issues.  The gas tank has been professionally cleaned and sealed. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
