Vehicle Detail
For sale is this one owner, 1962, series 62 Cadillac convertible. It is completely rust free except for the minor spot in the right front fender as seen in the photos. The rest of the body is excellant with the exception of 50 years worth of dings, chips, and scratches. All of the paint is original except on the drivers side from the center chrome strip of the front fender down, the top of the door down, and the center of the rear fin down (basically the the whole left side). It was scratched in it's early days from front to back and the whole side was repainted. All of the paint will actually hold a shine but this repainted section will not plus it's chipping away. As you can see, the rear floors are completely rust free (except for very minor surface rust), not even any pin holes. I didn't want to pull away the original carpet but I figured that any interested buyer would want to see the floors. If it's that important I will cut away the front also. There is no rust around the fender skirts. They are perfect. The right rear fender skirt was stolen in a grocery store parking lot in the early 1980's and it was never replaced. However, I found (and bought) one on ebay but I didn't take a photo of it. The trunk is awesome. All of the cardboard liner is in great shape, the trunk lid paint and insulation looks like new, and the jack instructions including the wooden tire wedge is still there. All of the exterior chrome is in great shape but is wearing thin in some places. The exterior stainless is also excellant. The engine hadn't been cranked since 2004. I put a Mercury Marine aerosol chemical product in it which is made to clean outboard two-cycle carburetors and let it sit for two days. I then poured some gas in the carb and it fired right up. The engine doesn't smoke one bit, period!! The original carter carburetor didn't need dissassembling for cleaning. The choke works well and the engine isn't missing. It runs excellant as a 64,000 original mile car should. The only leaks I have noticed are the valve covers and the power steering pump. When you drive it it runs and shifts smoothly. Reverse works as it should also. The brakes pull to the right. The tires are old. They hold air but are dry rotting. Everything under the hood appears to be original including the dated generator, and the A.C. compressor which has a stamping the reads" O.K. Cadillac" The interior leather and vinyl is awesome. Neither have a simgle crack, hole, or wear mark in them. There are some stains and discoloration but they only need to be dyed....definetely not replacing!! The dash pad is perfect. The steering wheel is perfect. There is some very fine oxidation of some of the aluminum and pot metal parts and some rust pitting on the inside windshield chrome post and convertible top brackets. Of course, the original carpet needs to be replaced as does the original soft top. As you can see in one of the photos, the original soft top cover (boot) is still with the car! The story behind this car is that it was bought by a local family (upper class) and the wife drove it up until her she was unable to drive anymore (1990). Since then, the son (now in his mid-sixties) drove it occasionally...not often though. He is a local doctor and claims that he didn't have the time being that he was always on call. The car was totally taken off the road in the mid-1990's and wasn't messed with until he (the Dr.) and I pulled it out of storage and got it running for a local parade in 2004. At this time, I was amazed that it ran as well as it did and everything including the top still worked (not sure about the A.C.). After the parade, he didn't put it back in storage, he just pulled it under his carport and covered it up. His wife recently called and asked if I was interested in buying it since I pestered him to buy his 1958 Corvette for over 10 years. She said that if she didn't call then he never would and she wanted it gone. Although I was hesitant, I went ahead and bought it to relieve her of the headache. For some reason, I kind of felt obligated since she was the one who finally made her husband (the Dr.) decide to sell me my dream car that I had been after for so long. The lights, windows, and turn signals are working just fine. The seat struggles. All of the other components aren't working. They were in 2004 but aren't right now. The horn, heater, radio, fan, A.C., convertible top aren't getting any electrical power which tells me that either a switch isn't working or some wire some where isn't making contact. So, I'm NOT going to say that these items don't work, I'm just going to say that they need servicing.....my honest opinion. I have the original owners manual, lots of registrations including one back to 1972, and the most current which is in 1990 which still has the sticker which has never been removed to put on a license plate. I also have an old service manual. Now that I have it home, cleaned it up a little, got it running again, and I know that even though I really like the car, the timing is bad for me to be buying a new toy. If you have any queations please feel free to call me up until 1:00 A.M. EST. Thank you. This car is located in Salisbury, N.C. My phone # is (704 )640-1983
