It was never in an accident or had any paintwork. Never been modified or abused. This has every single option available that year, it was nearly $70,000 when it was new. If not, the following information will help you better understand the features and equipment it contains. The Touareg V10 is powered by a class leading 310 horsepower 5.0 liter twin turbo diesel V10 engine that set it apart from all other suv’s on the market then, and even now. Even more phenomenal is the engine’s enormous stump pulling torque output of 750 newton meters at only 2,000 rpm! That’s enough to haul the Queen Mary out of the water and up the boat ramp. OK, not really, but it CAN tow a ¼ million pound airplane. The Touareg holds the world record for the heaviest load towed by a passenger car, pulling a Boeing 747. CLICK HERE to see the video. That amount of torque allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in the 6 seconds range which is quicker than just about any other suv out there, and is quicker than most sports sedans you will find. With its all-wheel drive traction, it can keep up with or even lead most any pure sports car like a Corvette, BMW M-class or Porsche in the stoplight drags, especially on a wet road. For those that say there is no such thing as too much power, there are chip tuning companies that can raise the V10’s horsepower rating to nearly 400 H.P. and the torque rating above 700 lb-ft! This V10 TDI engine has a forged steel crankshaft mounted in a 90 degree V cast iron block for maximum durability that all diesels are known for, topped off with overhead cam aluminum heads for light weight and improved heat dissipation. Two massive intercoolers mounted behind the front bumper feed cool air into variable vane Garrett twin-turbos to force-feed this beast. Bosch handles the fuel delivery with the latest technology Pumpe Duse (PD) direct injection fuel injectors that produce 30,000 psi pressure which not only contribute to the high power output but also allow great fuel economy. To eliminate any possible engine vibrations, a counter-rotating balance shaft is used so its no wonder that this engine has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for it’s high power output, excellent economy and inherent smoothness. In fact, the Touareg was named Car and Driver magazine's Best Luxury SUV, and Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year for 2004. The engine is mated to a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission with Sport mode and Tiptronic® manual control. This transmission has low first and second gears that provide brisk acceleration out of the gate, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and excellent fuel economy figures in the mid 20’s mpg in real world driving. In fact, at 55 mph the engine is loafing at only a little above idle at 1,350 rpm, and even at 70, it’s at a leisurely 1,750 rpm. It’s not until you hit 80 mph that it gets to 2,000 rpm which is right at the peak of the engine’s torque curve. If you have incredible self-control and can manage to keep the cruise control on 60 mph, you can actually get 30 mpg on a mostly flat highway. During more spirited driving sessions such as on twisting back roads, you can select Sport mode which keeps the engine in its powerband longer and delays upshifts for faster acceleration and initiates downshifts sooner for greater power. The transmission can learn and adapt to your driving style. In the Tiptronic manual setting, you move the selector lever from D to the right into the Tiptronic® position and can manually upshift and downshift by tapping the lever up and down. The driver information display in the dash always lets you know at all times which of the six gears you are in regardless of which mode or setting the transmission is in. This powertrain is backed up to Volkswagen’s 4XMOTION® Permanent all wheel drive system. This electronically controlled system sends power to the wheels that have the most grip depending on the available traction conditions. It can send up to 100 percent of engine torque to whichever axle needs it. Some of it’s features include a two-speed transfer case that allows you to haul the heaviest boat up the boat ramp or climb over rocks and logs on a steep trail at just above idle speed. An electronically locking center differential (EDL) to get you out of slippery situations. The optional rear differential lock for the ultimate in traction in the most demanding conditions allows the vehicle to keep moving as long as only one wheel has any grip. Complementing 4XMOTION® is Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) which is a sophisticated traction control system, and an Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP®) which enhances directional control with over/understeering of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to the appropriate wheel to create a countervailing vehicle movement. If you accelerate too rapidly on an icy curve, ESP® can prevent you from spinning out into the ditch. ESP® can be switched off for those times when you intentionally want to have some fun. In conjunction with ESP®, Hill Descent Assist (HDA®) is automatically activated whenever you are driving down a slope that is steeper than 20 degrees. The vehicle will apply the brakes to individual wheels as needed to maintain speed and help stabilize it without the need for stepping on the brake pedal. Even more impressive is the Touareg’s climbing ability. It’s rated to climb up to a 45 degree gradiant angle with an aproach/departure angle in the highest suspension level of 33 degrees. Rounding out this Touareg’s sophisticated drivetrain is the optional air suspension. This allows the driver to select one of four ride height settings depending on road/trail conditions affecting ground clearance. The street level setting is the most common position and is used for all normal driving conditions. It’s speed dependant and provides 7.28 to 8.66 inches of ground clearance. At highway speeds the level will drop to the bottom of that range to reduce drag and improve fuel economy as well as increase stability. At speeds above 90 mph the vehicle is lowered by 1 inch and at speeds above 120 mph, by a further 0.39 inch. The load level setting is fixed at 6.29 inches of ground clearance and is used for loading and unloading the luggage compartment as well as in assisting passengers enter/exit the vehicle. The off-road level provides 9.44 inches of ground clearance and is recommended for off-road driving up to 45 mph. Above that speed the vehicle will return to the street level until speeds drop below 25 mph for 30 seconds. The highest level is X’tra level and provides nearly 12 inches of ground clearance. It’s used for climbing over rocks and logs, wading through water and for freeing the underbody of the vehicle if it gets stuck. The Touareg has triple-fold door and tailgate seals and is rated to drive through nearly two feet of calm water at this level. Maximum speed in X’tra level is 15 mph, above which, the vehicle will lower to the off-road level. The driver information display in the dash monitors the level of the vehicle. An air compressor and air tank next to the spare tire supply the system with air through pressurized accumulators. Together with the air suspension an electronic Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system lets you select soft, medium or hard suspension feel. The AUTO mode is the standard setting and gives a medium feel, The COMFORT mode gives a softer ride, while SPORT mode firms up the suspension for greater control and road feel. Damping will automatically be set harder at higher speeds regardless of the setting selected, and in SPORT mode, ground clearance is set to 7.67 inches. The styling of the new for 2004 Touareg is an evolution of that Volkswagen generation’s clean lines and sweeping curves while adding bold and aggressive elements to form a beautiful updated design. A quick walk around the truck reveals how the Touareg is one of the most powerful, sophisticated and stylish vehicles ever created in the luxury sport utility class of passenger vehicles. From up front, it’s large black cross-hatched inserts in the bumper openings hint at the two massive intercoolers residing within, Next, clear lens headlights seem to flow over the hood to a steeply raked windshield and into sweeping curves along the sides of the truck as they meld into muscular round wheel arches filled with wide low profile tires on beautiful large-spoke aluminum wheels. Clear blinker lights in the rear view mirrors add an upscale touch and composite rocker panel trim deflects rock chips. The rear stainless steel exhaust tips are set far apart and give the truck a stable wide-track appearance while the aluminum roof rack functions as a spoiler to give an illusion of speed suggesting this truck is ready to take off at any moment. It takes styling cues from some of the priciest German vehicles as well as creating some that are all it’s own. It’s chic Euro-styling that looks handsome from any angle without being flashy. If you like traditional craftsmanship combined with high tech design, the interior is a feast for the eyes. Get in and sit down in a 12 way power seat that adjusts to the perfect driving position with settings for lumbar support and recline, and the power tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel that feels perfect to grip. Notice the soft supple feel of the soft grain upholstery, take a deep breath and inhale the scent of aromatic leathers surrounding you. Now glance above you at the glass moonroof that gives you a view of the sky and lets in the light. Lastly, gaze over at the dashboard and center stack to admire the beautiful high polished genuine Vavona wood trim and how it integrates old-world craftsmanship with the latest large screen navigation display screen. Note the brushed aluminum accent trim and feel the precision of the soft-touch control switches throughout. Notice the polished chrome details around the gauges, shifter and switches. At nighttime admire the red glow of the back lighted switchgear and instruments that don’t compromise your night vision. You can see why one car magazine said, “The museum of modern art doesn‘t have a display as stylish as the inside of this car!” And this isn’t just some boutique truck, all show and no go. As the performance figures noted previously, it will keep up with most any sports car on the road, and run circles around most any truck off the road, yet won’t drain your wallet at the fuel pump.
