Vehicle Detail

Here is a 1997 Honda Civic DX 2 door coupe, 1.6 liter engine, 5 speed manual transmission, with 183,000 miles. My sister-in-law bought this car new and sold (more like gave!) it to our son when he got his license in 2005. She kept it well maintained and recorded all service on a spreadsheet. Since our son has had it I have kept up on its maintenance. As a Christmas/early graduation gift we bought our son a newer car, so here is the Honda. This car runs very well, has averaged 36 MPG, and has been extremely reliable. It is a very basic car with few options except power steering and air conditioning. It has an aftermarket stereo, with a stock cassette player which is not hooked up. The interior is in average condition, with no rips or stains on the seats; the carpet has a little staining, and the headliner as two small holes. The drivers’ sun visor has some holes as well from constant sunlight due to being in the down position all the time. The center console is a little faded. The body is rust-free except for one small spot at the driver’s rear wheel well (see picture). This car has never been in an accident, and only has a few minor scratches/dents/dings, except for the right rear filler panel below the taillight where I managed to back it into my snow plow blade (see picture). The paint is still in good shape, although it could use a good buffing to really shine. The Michelin tires have 75% of their tread left. The clutch was replaced 22,000 miles ago. The car has one major shortcoming. The transmission is noisy and often will not go into second gear. It sounds like the countershaft bearings are worn as well as the second gear synchros. This is not the original transmission; the original started making what sounded like mainshaft bearing noise two years ago. I replaced the original with a cheap, used transmission so he could use the car at college while I rebuilt the original. As with a lot of things, I never got around to rebuilding it, and it will be included with the car if the winning bidder wants it. The car is still drivable, provided you have patience and don’t mind being looked at when the gears grind. I am listing this car with no reserve as it has served us well and does not owe us anything. I have described it maybe a little on the harsh side so that there are no surprises, and there are no warranties expressed or implied. The car is being sold as-is, and I would encourage you to come see and drive it before you bid. You can call my cell at 908-403-4838 (my name is Carl) between 9am and 7pm Eastern time if you have any questions. I will not ship it, but will work with your shipper as best I can. A $200 deposit is required (PayPal preferred) within 48 hours of the auction end, and full payment can be made by cash or cashier’s check when picking up the car. The car should be picked up within 7 days of the auction end. I do not have a buy-it-now price, nor do I end my auctions early, so please don’t ask. Good Luck! CarlOn Apr-06-11 at 14:29:26 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had a few questions about the driveability of this car. After it warms up, it will shift into second gear maybe 3 out of 5 times without problems. The rest of the time it will grind and usually not go in gear at all. I would not recommend that this car be purchased for everyday transportation for any length of time. The more it is driven, the worse the problem will get. Also, if you find yourself in a situation where it is necessary to accelerate quickly and it won't shift it could be dangerous. The few times that I have driven it and I had to be sure that I could keep accelerating I would go straight from first gear to third. When the original trans got real noisy I looked into getting a good used unit, but the prices were in the $600 to $700 dollar range. If you are a mechanically-inclined type of person but short on cash, an option would be to put the noisy original trans back in since it shifted fine, although I don't know how long it would stay working. If you have placed a bid and this disclaimer has changed your mind, let me know as soon as possible and we can retract your bid. I am posting this revision on Wednesday, April 6 at 5:25pm EDT. Thanks! On Apr-10-11 at 05:45:19 PDT, seller added the following information: IF YOU HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF EBAY FOR LESS THAN 10 DAYS OR HAVE NO FEEDBACK, CONTACT ME BEFORE YOU BID OR YOUR BID WILL BE CANCELLED !! I have been burned in the past by jokers bidding on and winning auctions for large-ticket items like cars, then not hearing from them or completing the transaction. Not only is it a headache for me, but it is unfair to the other bidders who have a true need for the item. I have already cancelled the previous high bidder since they did not respond to emails within 3 days.
