Vehicle Detail
1978 FJ40 3/4 ton "one of a kind" It has 8 miles on completely rebuilt engine. I have restored this FJ40 to be able to drive it as a daily driver, or to be used as a Crawler. The people I bought it from had intentions of turning it into just a crawler but I wanted to make an FJ40 that can do both. If you have ever driven one of these you know that they can climb anything and will literally crawl up a tree, but when you put them on a hill sideways you better be holding on. The wheel base Toyota used is great when you want to be really skinny and go on narrow trails but is useless for doing anything else besides narrow trails. Stock FJ's are extremely tippy and I wanted to change that so I can feel comfortable. I have restored a lot of these and really enjoy their unique design. It has been completely rebuilt from ground up. I had a Mechanic of 30 years experience help me put the power trane in. Everything had to be completely custom since it is all Chevrolet Engine and down. Frame and up is still the original 1978 FJ40. So to go through what all has been done. Running Gear: Front and rear are out of a Chevy 3/4 ton truck. So not only can you use this to crawl, you can actually use it to pull something. Front has Disc brakes and rear has Drum brakes. All fluids were flushed and replaced. Gears were checked and cleaned. Drive shafts were completely rebuilt and had to be machined to proper length. They are out of a 3/4 ton Chevrolet as well. Wheels and Tires: Wheels are made by Offroad Racing and are 8lug by 6.5"x 17"rims. Tires are Nitto Terra Grappler 33"x12.50". Front Shocks- Compressed 21" Extended 35". Rear Shocks- Compressed 13.5" Extended 24". Outside to Outside of Front tires measures 83". Transmission and Transfer Case : Tranny is a TH350, which is an automatic. I had brought it to a Transmission shop to be looked at to see if it needed to be rebuilt. They opened it up and told me eveything was really clean. Fluid was nice and pink and no metal shavings in pan. Shifts really clean. Does not clank when shifting like most tired Turbo 350's will do. Transmission Cooler is mounted to the front of radiator and will help keep it cooled by an additional 60 degrees F. Transfer case is a GM 205. The shifter had to be completely reshaped to make it into the original Toyota hole on the transmission hump. Engine: It has a small block 350. (model years is 1973-1979) Quality Automotive which is who helped me rebuild this machine completely, rebuilt the engine. It has been bored out at .030 over. Normal dyno testing done at this range is about 380hp. Headers have been sand blasted and coated with a ceramic paint that is good up to 2000F. So headers will not rust over time and look junky. To have those painted alone cost $6 an inch. Extremely expensive but I did not want to cheep out anywhere. Standard VHT paint is junk and does not hold up. Carb is a 1960's Rochester and has been rebuilt as well. Exaust is dual with turbo mufflers. These mufflers are quieter than straight pipes but will still give you that deep throaty sound. It has power steering. Electronic Ignition. Frame: Now from here up everything is 1978 Stock FJ40. I machined brushed the frame and coated it with an enamel brush on satin that is used on bare metal and stands up to gasoline. You have to take a grinder to it to brake through the coating. Tub & Top: All the doors were completely taken apart to give the best quality paint job possible. I have used PPG as my paint and it is a single stage. This paint is top of the line and extremely hard. Does not chip easily. All Exterior Hardware is Stainless Steel. Windshield is brandnew. Upholstery was done at Loose Ends Upholstery here in Kalispell. Ceiling liner and dash pad are brand new as well. I hope I did not over inform you. I try to give you as much information as possible to limit questions and also to help you read the detail that has gone into this FJ40. I do have the Fender Flares for the rear but did not want to put them on since they require drilling. I wanted to allow whoever buys it to make that decision. You can reach me at 1-406-257-3822. My name is Chris. I would be glad to answer any of your questions. If you have 0% feedback please contact me before bidding. If you are interested in making me an offer, please call and we can talk about price. My Reserve is very fair for what is put into this FJ40.
