Built in the tradition of the British Roadster, but without the warts For many enthusiasts, “affordable sports car'' is virtually synonymous with “Mazda MX-5 Miata.'' Since the Miata’s debut in 1989, it has been the first and only affordably-priced two-seat roadster since the demise of the British sports cars some years before. Despite its Japanese origins, in many ways this roadster represents the revival of the traditional British sports car. It has styling derivative of the Lotus Elan and excellent reliability in the tradition of Japan's automakers. The MX-5 Miata is the world's best-selling two-seat roadster. And for good reason: . . . The secret to its success? It’s simplicity, smart design, spritely weight, good performance, and affordability. Miata's forte has always been nimble handling. It has all the positive attributes of the MGs, Triumphs, and other small sports cars of the 1950s and 60s, with none of their warts. It is in that tradition, comparable to “The British Roadster” A little larger than it’s predecessor, with the RX-8-influenced styling that gives more room inside, so even six-footers can now fit comfortably. No body panels have been left unchanged, and an inch or two larger than the previous generation in almost every dimension, but doesn't look it. The chassis structure is significantly more rigid, with the engine moved back behind the front axle centerline to further improve handling. The oval grille and slit-like projector-beam headlights give it a look that combines classic European design with the contemporary Japanese idiom. A longer hood and shorter rear deck accentuate the new Miata's sports car proportions, and the wheels fill the wheel arches well, having the look of a high-performance car without being a steroid-injected caricature. And there is real power. The MX-5 is still very definitely a roadster. The engine touts 170 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque, packing a good kick, yet economical enough to be rationalized as a commuter. Working just as well in the cut and thrust of traffic as on an empty winding road, it brings smiles everywhere. It is an exceptionally well-balanced machine. Ever strictly a two-seater, comfortable, supportive high-bolstered sports seats cradle the driver and passenger. The driving office is excellent. The steering wheel and shift lever are positioned nearly perfectly, and the pedals are placed for heel-and-toe driving. Storage space inside includes a locking glovebox and three compartments in the rear bulkhead, with the center locking. There are bottle holders in the doors as well as center console. The trunk is large enough to accommodate luggage for a holiday getaway, and still leave room for souvenirs, spoils of war, or a case of wine from Paso Robles or Napa. The top is manually-operated and latches with one central latch. It can be put down or up from inside. The process takes mere seconds - less time than most power tops, so, no problem there. The heated glass backlight ensures good visibility in all top-up conditions. But driving with the top down, well . . that's the point of a roadster, . . .and wind protection is very, very good. There is just enough wind with the side windows down, and almost none with them up. Passive safety features include a sturdy unibody structure designed to meet or exceed impact protection standards, and front and side airbags. Excellent handling and stopping characteristics help active safety. The reason for a sports car is handling, and it shines in that department. It has a long wheelbase and wide track, both of which enhance stability. The engine has been moved almost completely behind the front axle line, and the fuel tank forward of the rear axle for near 50/50 weight distribution to further improve handling. This mass centralization and revised suspension geometry gives the MX-5 extremely quick response to steering inputs. A low center of gravity further enhances handling. Extensive use of aluminum in the suspension reduces unsprung weight, while aluminum hood and trunk panels reduce overall weight. Even commute traffic can be less of a chore as steering effort is light at low speeds and appropriately heavier as speed increases. The Mazda roadster changes direction like a roller skate, speaks to you clearly through the steering wheel and driver seat, accelerates adequately with a classic inline-four growl and writes the book on shifting precision with the steering mounted paddle shifters. With well-chosen gear ratios and slick, quick shift linkage, the six-speed gearbox further helps performance. Given the wide power band, shifting is not as necessary as expected, and a gear higher than expected could often be used. The four-wheel antilock disc brakes (ABS) are fully up to repeated fast stopping. Mazda has improved on a classic with the 2006 MX-5 Miata. This Mazda roadster is about simplicity in design and operation. It's about having fun behind the wheel. It's about feeling free and young on warm summer nights. Lowered top and an open road, Mazda's roadster has few equals when it comes to sheer entertainment and driving pleasure. Every bit as nice as one would hope. This car was purchased as certified pre-owned in 2007, and has received about 12,000 miles a year of driving. Used as an occasional fwy commuter and a weekend getaway car, tooling down California's back highways. This car has been a joy, and has never been abused in any way. Obviously the buyer of this car would most likely be in reasonable proximity to the seller. Please feel free to ask any questions, and if you would like to come out to kick the tires . . . . so much the better
