Vehicle Detail

1964 Triumph TR-4 Oregon car from new 3 owners, 77K original miles Very rare in factory Black *  No Reserve Auction  * Up for bids is this wonderfully well preserved Triumph TR4.  With only 77K original miles, this car has been in the care of just 3 local owners since new.  The car was bought new in Eugene, Oregon on May 23, 1964 by George and Hazel Bennett of Salem, Oregon.  It remained in their care until June of 1996 when it was presented to their son as a 50th birthday gift.  The son maintained the car in the tradition of his parents until 2003, when it was sold to a collector in Vancouver, Washington, just across the river from Portland.  All original, and wearing most of its original paint, this TR4 is one that has slipped through the cracks - never neglected, never modified, never handed off to a teenager - it remains a well cherished example of one of Triumph's most iconic models.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. With a sticker price of $3276, the purchase of this TR4 was offset by a trade-in of a MG 1100.... Very few TR4's were painted black, this is a factory original example showing the paint code 11.  Most of the car's paint is original and still presents well after all these years, a testament to its garaged existence.  I have taken a magnet to the entire car and have found no evidence of filler anywhere.  There are no rust problems anywhere on this car, including the undercarriage, it's a solid as they come.  Overall the car makes a strong appearance, black adds an undeniable presence to the car, at times making this Triumph appear more Italian than British.  The paint finish is fairly consistent throughout, showing good gloss and depth in spite of some touched up areas and the inevitable rock chips.  In a way it's the perfect combination; an honest, presentable car that shows a little patina - not so perfect that it's sterile, but well above anything that would call out for a repaint.  This is a car that you can actually use regularly without fear of an errant flying pebble. The car has good panel fit, gaps are good, doors open and close easily. The car's chrome is in good shape with no pitting.  Front and rear bumpers are straight, the over-riders shows a few dings and the back bumper has some hazing on the left side.  Lights and lenses are all in good condition, headlights are original, all signals operate correctly. The soft top is in excellent shape, it has good fit and shows well.  Although vinyl, it has the texture of a worked in leather jacket, a good look on this car.  Running down the road with the top up and the heater on in 30 degree weather isn't your typical TR-4 experience but I learned that it's enjoyable all the same!  At freeway speeds the top is quiet and stable with no whistling or flapping - for a British car I was impressed.  The soft top does its job to nearly transform this car into a soundproof, weatherproof coupe.  All snaps and hardware are present and operable.  The plastic windows are still clear and pliable, the back center window has some abrasion marks but no cracks or splits.  Top bows are the correct ivory color, they stow flat and raise easily.  Included but not shown is a tonneau cover (white) and a car cover. Nice, straight grill with no tweaks.  Cloisonne hood badge is in terrific condition.  The windshield has one filled in chip, and some light wiper rash on the passenger side.  It is the original Triplex piece from new, still hanging in there after 46 years.  Both side windows are Triplex pieces as well, both in good shape. When you get down low and look at the front and rear valances on this car you'll see that they're both in good shape with no damage, not always the case with these cars.  The luggage rack is an AMCO original.  It is easily removed at its 4 mounting points, 2 on the trunk hinges, and 2 at the license plate. The trunk is rust free and carries a vintage Michelin spare. You don't have to be a Georgia Bulldogs fan to appreciate the beauty of Black on Red.  For some (me) it's the ultimate color combination.  The interior on this car is mostly original and still in fine condition.  The seat covers and carpet have been replaced, otherwise it's original equipment from '64.  It's right in line with the exterior; very presentable with just a little patina. The dash pad and dash face are in good shape, all of the gauges work correctly and show good readings.  Lights work, signals work, horn works, wipers work - I haven't found any gremlins lurking, it all checks out.  All of the center cluster knobs function as they should.  The car has a very effective heater and fan for keeping the interior warm this time of year.  You'll like the way this car runs and drives.  It starts readily and has a good strong idle, instant throttle response, and a great exhaust note to accompany it all.  The car runs down the road straight and true, shifts beautifully, has good brakes, it runs strong and runs cool.  Steering and suspension are tight, and for a Triumph it doesn't have a lot of squeaks or creaks.   Typical to form though, it does leave a few drips and drops underneath, part of the genome of vintage British cars. Although not detailed, some will appreciate the degree of originality shown in this engine bay.  Items like the original Lucas distributor cap and coil.  The correct radiator cap and hose.  Factory wiring, tie-downs, and bullet connectors.  Dual Strombergs with original air cleaners and  fuel line connections.  All worthy subjects for the weekend detailer. The 2nd photo is one I took quickly while driving, to show the good oil pressure and cool running temperatures of this TR4.  Included with the car are service receipts and records from the 3rd owner, plus an owner's manual and tool kit. Be sure to click and enlarge the photos of the undercarriage.  They show a car that has had no accident history, no rust repair, and perfect original floorboards and rockers. More information on this at: http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bidding-overview.html I've had episodes in the past where a bidder will call me in a panic right after the auction ends, complaining that they tried to make a last minute bid and were not able to, then missed out on the car altogether.
