Vehicle Detail

Fun in the Sun: 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet ! In the fall of 1982, a new version of the World's favorite sports car was introduced: for the first time ever, the legendary Porsche 911 was available as a true convertible model. Finally, the Zuffenhauseners got hip to going topless! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Built from 1983 until 1989, the 911SC and Carrera Cabriolets are a far cry from the hyper-complex, computer-dominated, heavyweights offered up by the Porsche folks today. The 3.2 Carrera--essentially featuring the iconic 911 design first introduced in 1963--is perhaps the last user-friendly Porsche, a car that can be worked on with hand tools, rather than requiring plug-and-play computers. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not surprisingly, clean examples of the bullet proof three-point-two-liter Porsche have already made the smooth transition from admired supercar to highly sought-after collectible. That's true for Coupes, Targas, and especially the most desirable Carrera: the Cabriolet! The 1984 Porsche Carrera presented for auction here, VIN *WP0EB0917ES170850* is one of the nicest low-mileage examples you could ever hope to find. One of just 1,191 Carrera Cabriolets built for delivery to the United States, it was sold new in July 1, 1984 at OGNER PORSCHE of Canoga Park, California. A So-Cal resident all of its life, it still proudly wears its period blue-and-gold California license plate. Driven sparingly, as a sunny-day play toy only, it covered a mere 2,650 miles annually, on average, for a current total of just 71,074 actual miles, supported by clean Carfax and Autocheck reports! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's now inspect this fabulous Cabriolet in more detail, starting with the trunk. Trunk light works, gray felt mat is clean; original owner's manual, spare, jack, and compressor to inflate the spare are all accounted for. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view We take out the trunk mat for some detail shots. There are no signs of corrosion or neglect. Note Stereo amplifiers and CD-changer. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Having been owned by the proverbial "little old Lady from Woodland Hills," the car has never been abused. Bodywork is smooth and does not display any dings or dents. Peeking down the sides, we note nothing but laser-straight sheet metal. Being a Southern California Porsche, there's absolutely no corrosion! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Cab has recently been fitted with 17-inch factory "Turbo Twist" wheels. They wear excellent BRIDGESTONE Potenza RE750 performance radials of the size 215/45R17 up front, 255/40R17 in the back. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Water-tight, black canvas convertible top is original and in excellent condition, with a crystal clear back window. The car is equipped with a full tonneau cover that's ideal to shield the interior from prying eyes and hot sun rays when parked with the top down. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This 911 was delivered wearing a very attractive, rarely seen special order color, Slate Blue Metallic, paint code 661. While not 100% perfect (there are a few minor blems that have been carefully touched up), the finish is still very smooth and glossy. It's an amazingly beautiful presentation, considering the car's age--yes, this "timeless" 911 is now almost 27 years old! Let's check out the 911's cockpit now. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash layout is pure, classic 911. Everything is bone stock, even the leather-wrapped, 380mm steering wheel is the original, factory-issued item, and it has remained in pristine condition. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Iconic 911 gauges - yes, they all work perfectly, including the clock. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's try to focus on the dash top - there are no hairline cracks, splits, or chips anywhere. This low-mileage Porsche was always garaged! Click on the above image for another, XXL-sized image (a separate browser window will open) Gray-beige leather on front seats is still supple, shows just a very light patina befitting its age. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Rear seats provide plenty of space for additional passengers, especially with the top down. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Rear seat backs can be folded down individually to increase usable luggage space. Note rear speakers, lap belts, and extra clean, original carpeting. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we go, let's have a good look at Porsche's engine compartment and undercarriage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) As spotlessly clean as the remainder of the car, the fabled 3.2-liter boxer runs every bit as good as it looks. Being a low-miler, it never needed any work beyond regular servicing. There are no annoying oil leaks, and there's no exhaust smoke on initial start-up. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Delivering 207 teutonic horses at 5,900 rpm, the sound of a rear-engined Porsche is still the sexiest roar in the universe. Everything looks clean and dry, even deep down under. The factory's enhanced corrosion-protection includes liberal zinc-plating; even outside of California this Carrera could conceivably last forever! The pristinely preserved undercarriage shows no hint of rust or damage, just factory finishes--including honey-colored traces of the factory-applied Cosmoline protective wax--and German steel. Did you expect anything less from this fine California Cabriolet? Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Piloting this 911 Carrera convertible is pure joy. The car starts, runs, drives, handles, and stops excellently. There are no rattles or shimmies to report. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A vintage open-air Porsche always creates a stir, wherever you go. On the highway, other motorists respectfully relinquish the fast lane when you approach. To call this nine-eleven a feel-good-car would be an understatement. It's heaven on wheels! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Be it as a prestigious daily driver or a cherished collectible, this well-kept Carrera provides unequalled open-air driving enjoyment. Keep it garaged, tuned and detailed, and it will never lose its value; that's guaranteed! It's easy to maintain (remember the famous Carrera chain tensioners), inexpensive to insure as a collector car, fully accepted by the PCA crowd, and looks as good as a late-model Ferrari Spyder, at a fraction of the cost. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Rarely does the opportunity arise to acquire a 3.2-liter PORSCHE 911 Carrera Cabriolet from California that features such low, original miles. Being the last 911 displaying 'Butzi' Porsche's classically pure design, the '84-'89 Carrera is quickly rising to the zenith of collectible PORSCHE automobiles.
