This model is known for a broken wiring harness to the rear hatch - where repeated use over the years causes the wiring to break and need repair or replacement. A new harness is available from BMW at a cost of $275 (dealer list) per side. I have cleaned the switches, replaced one of the control units and generally gottten things working from an non-enthusiast previous owner. With the wiring in this condition it pops a fuse and sends a warning message to the display panel that the trunk is open. It also requires a second lock attempt to secure the car with the central locking system. This is a now reliable driver that an enthusiast can tinker with and keep on the road to haul bikes, musical instruments or anything else that needs to be moved with the ability for the seats to fold down and load stuff up.
