Vehicle Detail
For sale is a 1963 pontiac grand prix,, To start with I would like to say I dont understand how so many people on Ebay ask for alot of money for an old car and have such short descriptions. I like to think that I have fully informed a potential buyer to the point that they know exactly what they bought, So you will have to excuse the long description. I consider myself an (old car guy) and would want someone to be happy with a purchase and not dissapointed. That being said,,my discription will probably include many things most people would not even bother to mention. So if your interested in the car make yourself comfortable and read on. First: Story,, I purchased this 63 pontiac Grand Prix from out of a barn where it sat for approx 8 years on jack stands. being a complete car that was very dirty that was driven into the barn. The owner had interest in old cars, but not enough to really pay the kind of attention to them that old cars require, He had good intentions and purchased over the years many extra parts and collected them for someday that never happened and then decided to sell it rather than have it sit any longer. When he first got the car maybe ten years ago before it sat he had it repainted, installed all new shocks and it looks like the springs may have been replaced, he installed a new front anti sway bar and links ,and also installed headers. He kept the original exhaust manifolds and gave them to me with the car, with many boxes of extra parts he accumulated over the years. far to much to list out, extra gauges, dash parts, emblems, lights, carb, rocker mouldings, etc. I had the car towed to my brothers house nearby and he did what had to be done to drive the car to my house 14 miles away, this included ,replacing the starter, replacing a bad front wheel bearing, changing the oil checking the fluids, I drove the car home without any problems. It was then gone over and checked out to make it road worthy enough to take and have it inspected, (NY saftey inspection), This dont meen it was restored, It means that it was made so that everything works enough for the car to be driven legally on the road. and everything that should work does, lights, wipers ,brakes, visual of brake lines, front end parts. The mileage listed is unknown to be true, assume its not. It was found to have needed, and replaced. lower ball joints, upper control arm bushings, a replacement of a front spindle,,front wheel bearings, front wheel cylinders rebuild, replacement of heater care, replacement of rear leaking pinion seal. And alot of cleaning. I then drove the car for approx 40 miles without any issues. I am seeing if I can sell it because I need the garage that its in and dont want it to sit outside. I have restored cars in the past and have the knowledge but cant do the work anymore due to an injury., Condition: Interior,,, The inside of the car is very presentable with the original vynle seats only having some minor wear to the sewn bead on the driver seat where you rub on it getting in and out. the interior door panels are very nice with new arm rests. the carpet was replaced, the rear package tray area was recovered with non original vynle. The head liner has one small patch. the dash pad was cracked and repaired with apoxy and looks good but has a different texture than original. one small tear in rear qtr interior panel was glued. steering wheel has typical discoloration and cracks that was common on these cars most of the chrome inside looks nice with no major pitting of any kind, console gauges, handles etc. overall I would say the interior looks very nice and everyone compliments on it. all the gauges work with the exception of the clock and the feul guage sometimes goes to full then comes back. I think its a ground problem. the radio does not work but the car comes with two others and extra gauges.,, Engine drive train and under hood: The motor is not the original to the car, I was told it was but the numbers on it seem to suggest that its from a 66 lemans, It is a 389 4 barrel wich I believe is what the car came with, it is mostly physically the same with some differences like the style of the water pump and the power steering pump. the car has a newer style power steering pump but the original style comes with the car. PLease note added info about motor at bottom of listing in questions and answers, I looked into the motor numbers as per someones request and the info may be useful ,The motor and underhood will need to be cleaned up to show it off anywhere,. It has headers, chrome valve covers and edelbrock air cleaner, and some chrome dress up parts but it has been neglected as far as appearance goes. I also have the original air cleaner assembly with the car. The motor runs well, I think it may have been rebuilt as it looks very clean inside under the valve covers. It has a slight valve train noise when cold but it sounds tight and healthy with no smoke or alarming sounds ., Trunk: the trunk has a new mat and jack storage bag installed and is clean with new spatter paint. It has the hardware for the spare to mount but has no spare wheel., Body: ,, Probably the most significant things when starting with an old car is rust issues, So this is wher this car is far above average in my opinion. It was heavily undercoated when new and looking it over it has survived far better than most, An overall honest description of the body,,, The car has been repainted, The quality of the work was very unprofessional, I guess the guy just wanted it to look decent. It is painted the original color of the car but the preparation was such that the car has dullness ,cracking, and has some touched up scratches. surface rust near the rear sail panel was touched up with paint. The car has alot of small waves in it. For those of you who know the difference between a car that was not blocked out with a long board and instead dug up with a DA sander will know what I mean. The car looks decent from 20 feet away but should be done over. I have had many old cars and will say that this car has areas of surface rust in places that the undercoat peeled, but it has very solid floors, supports ,body mounts, rockers, inner and outer, wheel wells, radiator support, door skin folds, I see no evidence of any major rust anywhere you would expect. The only rust through I found on the car was under the trunk mat toward the front of the trunk. It was getting soft enough to poke a hole through with a screw driver. in an area about 10 in X two feet. I put a fiberglass patch in that area and painted the floor with rustoleum and put tar and tar paper similar to the original. Then installed a new floor mat, Its not something I would bother with unless the car went through a complete resto, and the only way you would know is that I just told you. The frame has surface rust only and no evidence of rot or repairs, The doors open and close like a bank vault. The gas tank was removed and drained and inspected and looks like it was restored and sealed inside , it was cleaned and repainted on the outside to preserve it and re installed with new cap, Oring and gasket.. The chrome:, The chrome on the bumpers is again presentable from a distance but have issuse like areas pealing and scratches, the back bumper has a dent on one side, the front bumper is nicer, a vent window has some chrome peeling but I think I have another, some pitting on front headlight bezels. Missing left front wheel opening moulding. Rear grill has some significant pitting. The transmission had a leak, A plug on the bottom that is square and looks like a freeze plug on a motor was leaking and I sealed it with JB weld epoxy, Ther was no cracks or damage of any kind, it was a slow leak, but to replace the plug it would be something to do at a later date if trans gets serviced. The only reason I mention it is so someone doesnt look and see some epoxy and think the trans was broken or cracked. for those people who might be familiar with it its a slimjim trans. It has one other very slow drip from a screw in plug that I didnt take out or try to reseal because Im unfamiliar with these and its just a small drip. nothing else is leaking anywhere that I have seen, The trans cooling lines have been installed lousy, and spliced with rubber hoses, I would replace them. The steel brake lines under the car look like they have been replaced and look to be in good condition, The feul line was a problem some time in the past and was sistered with a rubber feul hose. The car will come with a new roll of steel 3/8 feul line that can be installed if you want to. The exhaust system is dual exhaust with stock mufflers and in overall good condition. Well I think that about covers it, described to the best of my ability. This is a solid decent old car that will be a great canidate for resto. Or can be driven and worked on as you go. It is a fairly desirable model being a Grand Prix 2dr, and should be worth 11 to 20 thousand finished with nice paint and chrome. Its not a car I would jump in and commute to work just yet, but it starts, drives, brakes, and steers well. A good oppertunity for someone who wants to get into the hobby, Or a mechanic looking to do local cruise-ins and upgrade as you go. The tires are old and the rear have some dry cracks in them, I would consider changing the tires for saftey,, I cannot guarranty anything as its an old car, only that my description should be found to be accurate. The car will need to be picked up and paid for in a reasonable amount of time , If more than three weeks email before bidding. Payment should consist of 25% within 24 hours of auctions end through Paypal. I would prefer the rest be paid at pickup of the car to simplify things with some kind of guarranteed payment. I also would like to recommend even with my detailed description that you either look at the car or have someone look at it for you. I cannot help with relocating the car the buyer will have to arrange everything, but I will acommidate pickup meaning I will be here for pickup., Thanks for sticking with me if you read this far. And good luck bidding. Please bid to buy. make sure you understand what your buying and if you need a question answered ask, The car is for sale localy so I must reserve the right to end the auction at any time unless the reserve is met and then the auction will run its course . The car has a clear transferable NY registration,On Dec-30-10 at 13:31:50 PST, seller added the following information: I have had alot of requests for photos of the underside, questions about rust. So I have added as many photos as the listing allows to hopefuly give a good idea of the codition of the metal. If anyone would like any photos of specific areas send a request and email address and I will try to send others to you.On Dec-31-10 at 22:05:02 PST, seller added the following information: I just lowered the reserve so that the next bids should buy the car for those interested.
