Ultimate "Keeper" 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa ! Porsche aficionados agree: the 1987-89 Carrera may be the best 911 ever built. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Why? It's simple, really: it is the last one to feature the pure body style now considered classic and the first to incorporate technological advancements such as the vaunted GETRAG G-50 transmission. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sure, subsequent generations of the 911 yielded good cars, too, but the air-cooled Carrera struck the perfect balance between old school and jet age. It is a far cry from the hyper-complex, bloated, electronically regulated, heavyweight 4-seater offered up by Zuffenhausen today. No, this Carrera is the last user friendly Porsche that can be worked on with hand tools instead of plug-and-play computers. For its future as a sought-after collectible, this bodes well, very well, indeed. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa presented here, VIN *WP0EB0912KS160271*, was manufactured during the month of September, 1988 and remains a very nice original example of the last batch of those highly desirable 3.2 G-50 cars. More specifically, a mere 860 U.S.-bound Targas were built during the 1989 model year! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sold new on April 9, 1989 at PORSCHE of San Diego, the car was fitted with numerous extra-cost options, documented by the factory sticker on page 1 of the warranty book. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This Porsche comes with its factory books, the original merlot vinyl pouch, service records, and a clean Autocheck print-out. The maintenance booklet contains dealer stamps for servicing up to 1997. The car was driven less than 9,400 miles annually, on average. From 2001 on, the car's second owner, a Gentleman from Ventura, Calif., had his pride and joy looked after by Ventura Independent Porsche. All service records from the past decade are included, totalling $4,755.98. Original 1989 California license plates are proof that the car was continually registered in the Golden State. Let's now inspect this fabulous 911 in more detail, starting with the trunk. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Always a good omen: presence of original tool roll and compressor for spare tire inflation, items that are all-too-often missing. Gray felt carpeting looks very tidy, trunk light works, hood shocks don't sag. We're pleased, very pleased, indeed. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The trunk floor doesn't disappoint, either: everything is clean and factory stock. The vulnerable "nose" section doesn't show any traces of rust or damage. Original paint, decals and stamped numbers abound. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view VREDESTEIN spare has never been used, and neither has the factory tire jack. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Carrera's coachwork looks stunning. This 911 featured a fully galvanized shell from the factory, plus, it has spent the past 22 years in sunny Southern California, so there are absolutely no rust bubbles or other issues related to a harsh climate. The left front fender was replaced with a factory part in 1991 due to a small supermarket parking lot mishap, but you'd never know it if we did not mention it here. Straight as an arrow, we'd call this one "unmolested." Click on any of the above images for a full-size view A Targa combines the advantages of a convertible's open air pleasures with those of a coupe's rigid body construction. It takes but seconds to remove the Targa top, fold it, and store it in the trunk. Suddenly, open air motoring takes on a whole new dimension! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Eye-catching Prussian Blue metallic paint, shimmering in the warm California winter sun. This special-order factory color must be one of the most attractive Porsche offerings ever! There are no blemishes like dings, dents, scratches, or bubbles to note that would cause anybody sleepless nights; a few, very small rock chips have been carefully touched up. Weatherstripping and brightwork is in very good to excellent condition as well. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view What would a real 911 be without a set of the iconic FUCHS wheels? This Carrera comes with immaculate, chromed alloy rims, dipped deep into BRIDGESTONE Potenza Super High Performance rubber of the dimension 205/55R16W up front and 225/50R16W out back and fitted with cloisonné PORSCHE crests to the center caps. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash layout is pure, classic 911, with the large, white-on-black VDO gauges--they all work, even the clock! It's a timeless design that's as functional as it is beautiful. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Everything is bone stock, except for the installation of a leather-covered, late-model Porsche steering wheel and a modern, XM-radio-ready CD/MP3 Stereo system. Options include: Power disc brakes Power windows (M651) Automatic heating system (M424) Air conditioning (M559) Central locking system (M341) Key-operated alarm Heated outside power mirrors, left and right Partial power seats, left and right Fog lamps (M566) Automatic speed control Two speakers on rear shelf (M494) Automatic two-point rear seat belts (M185) Brake pad warning light (wear indicator) Rear window defogger Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Wonderfully preserved door panel. Factory fit and finish on these late Carreras is examplary. It's hard to believe that this fabulous car has just celebrated its 22th birthday! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Carrera seats' reputation for comfort is legendary. A nice addition: a set of black floor mats embroidered with the targa logo protecting the original velour carpeting. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Linen-colored leather presents itself wonderfully preserved; it's still supple and does not show any cracks or split seams. Seats are partially power-operated. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Those spacious--leather--rear seats don't look like they've ever been used. Push a small red button and the back rests fold down individually as needed to create additional luggage space. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we take off, there are two more areas to inspect: engine compartment and undercarriage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Inside a toothbrush-clean engine bay resides the fabled 3.2 liter power plant; it runs as good as it looks. In fact, a compression test performed by Ventura Independent Porsche on 10/13/2010 revealed an even 175 lbs compression on all 6 cylinders, indicating a very healthy motor. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Additionally, clutch and throwout bearing have just been replaced to the tune of $2,380.00; while the engine was out, a new sound pad was installed. (We've also just replaced the windshield.) The pristinely preserved, dry and clean undercarriage shows no hint of rust or accident damage, just factory finishes and zinc-plated German steel. Brownish "stuff" on suspension parts is not surface rust, but simply residue of the factory-applied Cosmoline protective wax. Click on the image to the left for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Photos below show the undercarriage in more detail. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Piloting this 911 elicits pure joy. The car starts, runs, drives, handles, and stops very well, indeed. With the top safely stowed away inside the front trunk, a convertible-like feel is achieved, minus the wind buffeting. Heavenly! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Its GETRAG G-50 5-speed transmission with its BORG WARNER synchromesh system certainly can handle the Carrera motor's torque; the hydraulic clutch ensures ease of operation. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Delivering 217 strong, Teutonic horses @ 5,900 rpm, the sound of a rear-engined, six cylinder Porsche is still the sexiest roar in the universe. On the open highway, we had a blast! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home, we marvel at the incredible value this '89 Carrera has to offer. Perfectly suited for daily driving duties, it still is a Super Car in many aspects, able to run away from pretty much any other automobile, its limits well beyond what can be explored on public roads. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) It's a gas miser, easy to maintain (remember the famous Carrera chain tensioners), inexpensive to insure, fully accepted by the PCA crowd, and looks as good as a late-model Ferrari Spyder, at a fraction of the cost. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A low production model to begin with, with only 860 ever built, you will rarely see a 1989 Carrera Targa offered for sale. Here's a golden opportunity to acquire one of the few survivors to appear on the market, as most of its brethren have long since retreated to enthusiast's climate-controlled garages!
