* * * 1939 Plymouth P7 Business Coupe * * * Here up for bids on eBay is this incredible survivor, a 1939 Plymouth Business Coupe.  With each passing year, cars like this get harder to find.  Cars that haven't been modified, mistreated, or left to sit for years.  Always garaged, this car has had constant, albeit limited use over its 71 years with a 4 owner history.  Sold new to a farmer in Hagerstown Maryland, the car was used sparingly for the next 30 years, mainly just to drive in to town.  The car moved to Martinsburg West Virginia with its second owners in 1969, a couple who used the car in parades and not much else for the next 40 years.  The car was sold to its 3rd owner in 2009 when it was advertised on eBay and caught the attention of a noted car builder here in Portland Oregon.  A custom build was planned but after consideration of the car's originality it was decided to leave it untouched, and it was sold to a local enthusiast that same year.  The 2nd owners (1969-2009) have stated on title documents that the car has original miles - 16,600 - and many elements of the car's appearance suggest that to be true, however other facets of the car appear to be more like 116K.  In any case, this Plymouth represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire an original, unaltered business coupe.      Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page.   The car wears an older repaint, it's presentable but certainly not perfect, the proverbial 20 footer.  The repaint was of good quality with a minimum of orange peel and no apparent prep flaws.  That said, expect to find lots of little chips and small scrapes here and there, the car has no real dents but the body does show its age.   What you won't find on this car are rust problems.  Always garaged, this Plymouth is just as solid as can be.  I have taken a magnet to the entire car and have found no areas of filler.   The undercarriage (pictured further below) is likewise solid and original. All of the car's brightwork is in good original condition, showing just light pitting in spots.  The stainless trim on the grill and hood is in great shape with no dings.  The bumpers are in fantastic shape with good chrome and no dents or dings.  Hubcaps and trim rings show a little age but are presentable after 71 years.   The wheels are super, still showing the factory striping with no faded spots.  Tires are Firestone 6.00x16 front and 7.00x16 rear.  This small difference adds a nice dimension to the car's appearance, giving it a 'big and little' look in a very subtle way. Windshield gasket is weak, running board rubber shows some cracked areas in the corners but is holding up well overall.  The ugliest spot on the car is a old repair done behind the left rear bumper, visible in the 3rd photo below.  Both taillights are in excellent shape.  All of the glass on the car appears to be original and is in great shape, even the windshield.  The pieces are branded with names Duo-Lite and Herculite. All of the lights work correctly, the photos below show the parking lights illuminated from within the headlights, the full lamps are much brighter.  The car's nose is crisp and undamaged, showing no road wear, another clue to its possible low mileage.  The cloissonne Plymouth emblem is in excellent condition. The interior is like stepping back into time.  Nothing has been modified or changed here, it's exactly as it left the Lynch Road Plant 71 years ago.  The seat upholstery is still serviceable, the floor mats are still good.  The door panels show some scuffs and tears but no water staining.  The lower door weatherstripping is original and still pliable.  Doors both close with a simple 'click'. Good steering wheel with no cracks or splits.  Instrument cluster has lost some of its paint, gauges all work correctly and show good readings.  Speedometer works, horn works, wipers work, panel lights work.  Cigar lighter is present but has lost most of its knob.  Switches all operate correctly, lighted switch at far left controls the heater fan. Door jamb service stickers show a reading of 15,033 in Dec. of '62.  Woodgrained dash still nice, glovebox untouched. Footwells show minimal wear.  Working heater.  Underdash area all stock, wiring still in good condition.  Windlacing in the door jambs is still in good shape. The headliner has one small hole (visible in first photo below), otherwise it's looking great after all these years.  The wear on the door panels is the interior's weakest point. I've sold a lot of vintage American cars with big trunks but this Plymouth takes the title - it's simply cavernous.  The original mats are in great shape, no rust problems on the lip, underside of the mat shows no history of trapped water.  The leather bag in the back contains vintage snow chains.  The trunk has a pass-through door to the passenger compartment.  On the flooor beneath this door you'll see the factory jacking equipment, still with its instructions tag. Behind the driver's seat is where the spare tire is kept, the oilcloth cover has shrunk a bit but is still in nice shape for its age.  The spare wheel and tire are in great shape.  The car has all of its original keys, (trunk, access door, gas cap, passenger door) and all of those locks work. The flathead six fires to life immediately and just runs super.  Maybe the most convincing argument for the low miles is the way this car drives.  It motors along strongly with no issues or drama, sure and steady, just a pleasure to drive.  The motor makes good power and has good throttle response, freeway driving is no problem with this car.  The car runs cool, doesn't smoke, has adequate brakes and is not a leaker. While not detailed, the toothbrush and Q-tip people out there can see the possibilities for bringing up the appearance of this engine bay.  It's all there, untouched and original, right down to the spark plug wires.   The undercarriage shows the same degree of age, its real beauty lies in the fidelity of its floor pans and frame.  No rust, and no history of rust repair, a mark of pride for this 71 year old survivor.
