Vehicle Detail

Purchased in 1989. It was converted to a race car, for sports car club showroom class racing. It is now most suitable for vintage class racing. It was last raced 12 years ago, and has been in storage since. The engine was started and ran briefly 2 years ago. This auction is for the car, plus a homemade TRAILER that is sized to haul this car. The trailer has removable sides for hauling other items. Also included is a portable ENGINE HOIST. The Illinos Title is clear. The mileage is only 51,034. VIN on title is 0021856, but it probably should be 124BS0022856. This car is not a street ready car. It has been modified as much as possible to race within showroom class (Improved Touring) race rules. Many items have been removed to reduce weight/increase power. I am auctioning this car for my father, who can no longer race. I have noted what is missing or changed that I know of. It certainly would make a great vintage showroom class race car, or a parts car, but would take a fair amount of work and some parts to fully restored. Engine: The original 4 cylinder 1608 cc engine size. Engine is sound, does not smoke and was running well when last run. The main bearings are fine. One of the rod end bearings was being worked on, may be ok, but should be checked. The oil pan has an access door cut in to it that leaks and needs to be sealed. The generator guts were removed to reduce engine drag, so that the battery needed to be charged before each race. There is an added electric fuel boost pump. The muffler has been removed. Transmission: Shifts fine & sounds fine. There is one problem in that when the gas is let off while in 2nd gear, it will pop out of gear. Brakes/Tires: Racing brakes. Stock rims with racing tires - lots of tread on the tires. Interior: The carpets and insulation have been removed and a carpet put in front of the front seats only. Front seats are in quite good condition. The back seat has been removed but is with the car. The back seats cannot be installed, due to a strong roll bar put in the back (see pictures). There is NO heater or radio. Body: The windshield is fine, but the roll-up door windows are gone along with door cranks. The convertible top & frame are gone too. Some light wiring has been removed. Although the stop lights, tail lights and headlights are supposed to work, I could not verify this as the battery is not charged. The turn lights do not work. The body looks fine for a race car. It has been repaired. The paint is not glossy. It is a standard fuel tank. Some of the underbody was reinforced with welded sheet metal. Trailer: Homemade single axel. The bed is roughly 10’ long & 5’ wide. It is just big enough to load the Fiat with the sides removed. It was used to haul the Fiat to each race. It has wood ramps and a manual winch. The tires are like new. It has three removable sides for hauling other items. Engine Hoist: Don’t know much about it other than it is portable. See photo – it is RED and in front of the trailer. The car, trailer and hoist are in the town of Lakemoor, Illinois, northwest of Chicago, next to McHenry, Illinois. Full payment is due within 7 days of auction close by cash, paypal, cashiers check, or credit card. The car, trailer and hoist must be picked up within 30 days of payment. Buyer is responsible for picking up all items. I have tried to give an accurate description of this car, but the car is sold as is, with no warranty. I am not responsible if the car differs some from the descriptions, or if I unknowlingly omitted something that one may consider important. On Nov-15-10 at 19:42:13 PST, seller added the following information:One ebay emailer has asked if it perhaps a later model than 1970, since the hood has two bumps. He believes that 1970 models did not have the bumps. Another emailer wondered about the CCs since 1970 models were 1438CCs, while later models had 1608 CCs. We have a hand writen receipt of purchase from 1989 stating it as a 1970 124 Fiat Spider. We also have a 1992 receipt from an engine rebuilder stating 1608 CCs. It is possible that it was originally 1438 CCs and rebored to 1608 CCs for more power.
