Vehicle Detail

Until recently we had 4 Westys. Now retired, we are making more and more longer road trips. It has become evident that at our age comfort is winning out over nostalgia and charisma so reluctantly we are putting our ‘67 Splittie up for Auction. When we bought the van it was in the hands of a “hippy type” as of course many were. It was in good mechanical shape and the exterior was also very good, however the interior stank to high heaven ( the owner was a heavy smoker and his 2 dogs no doubt contributed to the overall effect). The result was my wife would not even set foot in it let alone go camping. Every single piece of the interior seemed to be tainted with the odor and it became evident that it would have to be gutted and redone if we were ever to use it for the purpose for which it was designed. So it was every single item of the interior with one or two exceptions was discarded after taking its dimensions in preparation for making a replacement piece. Many more photos can be seen by going to http.wingsandwheelsfl.tripod.com/1967westfalia The van has had a number of upgrades including fitting a 2 Liter engine and the addition of a Dometic Fridge together with a house battery and a Yandina battery controller. The fridge works fine on 12v DC and 110v AC. There is of course no propane system on a ‘67 I had previously experimented with a solar panel charging the house battery, this was only partly successful with the house battery being fully discharged after about 5 hours of running the fridge.so the Yandina controllert was fitted, this means you can now arrive at the destination with a fully charged house battery It kept me busy during the summer of 2009 and turned out to be a very satisfying experience. The result was all new cabinets and upholstery and absolutely “no smell“. Insulation was installed behind every panel and under the new floorboards. This has made a dramatic change in keeping the van cool in Florida and will no doubt help to keep the van warm in more northerly climes, (the heating on early VWs being notoriously weak) I can‘t be sure what effect the insulation has had on the noise level but it can only have improved it.. One key fit’s the ignition and all doors with the exception of the cargo door which I suspect has been changed sometime in the past. There is some evidence of bondo on this door which can be seen on the photo on the website. The luggage rack was purpose made for the previous owner and comes with the package which also includes an original Westfalia Tent in extremely good condition, a hard to find item which always raises the value. The luggage rack is sturdy without being too heavy, (easily put on or removed by two people. The design allows the pop top to be raised to full height and can be loaded from inside the van. I would be happy to drive the van to it’s new owner or to an east coast port at a cost to be agreed after payment has been received in full. Since taking some of the photos I damaged the rear bumper whilst getting the Splittie out to take some more shots. This left the bumper looking a bit “curly” and the engine cover could no longer be closed. There was no bodywork damage and the bumper was obviously repairable in the right hands. Rather than sell the van in that condition I decided to close the auction and have the bumper repaired. This has now been done and the Westy is back up for auction. I do not consider this Splittie a show car, it has served us well as a daily runner albeit only 5 miles daily round trip to the cycle trail. It has however won best of class in local car shows and always gets a lot of attention. In fact you cannot park up for very long before someone will be along to tell you that they or someone in their family had one and rued the day they sold it. It seems I will probably be joining their ranks after the auction closes, but at the present time it makes more sense to reduce our inventory. Please keep in mind this is a 43 year old vehicle. This is evident in a number of different areas particularily in the way a 1960’s vehicle handles. For example the drum brakes are no match for the increased power from the 2 liter engine and the visibility from any of the seats in no way compares with the present generation of vehicles. The Westy has survived 43 years of life on the road and as such carries some age related scars. Although still very presentable there is evidence of Bondo on some lower bodywork which does not show up too well on the photos. Having said that the floors and rockers are sound but you cannot take away the fact that it will always be the sought after 1967 year Westy. If you propose to make a Show Car out of it please keep this in mind when bidding. I would not wish to over emphasize negative aspects of the vehicle but at the same time I would not like the high bidder to be disappointed. Given the price which restored Splitties now sell for there should be ample scope for further investment to the bodywork if you so choose. Some new door seals are certainly needed. The photos of the interior, the upgrades, tent and roof rack speak for themselves. Overall the Westy typifies the era and always draws a smile from passers by, a satisfying experience which as the owner I have always enjoyed.
