Vehicle Detail

* * * 1965 Volvo PV544 Sport * * * Excellent driver Pacific Northwest car  Practical, reliable classic  Here up for bids on eBay is this very nice '65 PV544S.  If you follow these cars on eBay you're probably used to seeing a lot of clapped out examples needing lots of work.  While this car may not be ready for Pebble Beach, it's a good honest old car that has seen a lot of care.  I recently drove it on a 300 mile day trip and it performed flawlessly.  This car looks pretty sharp running down the road, you'd be surprised how much attention it draws.  Ford people like it because it looks like a shrunken down '48.  A few people I've spoken with drove these cars while stationed overseas in the military and haven't seen one in years.  This car features a rebuilt B18 and a recent overhaul of the brake system, it's ready for the road.   Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page.   From a cosmetic standpoint this car presents well, the paint is not show quality perfect but pretty nice for a car that you could drive everyday.  The car has picked up some chips, a few small scrapes, that type of thing, but overall it makes a good impression.  The paint job is in the orginal color - "Horizon Blue", code 89, this was the first color other than black that Volvo offered for the 444, back in the early 50's.  The paint is of good quality with no overspray, prep problems or excessive orange peel.  One of the car's strong points is its absence of rust, the lower trunk area has had the typical repair that you see on this series, otherwise the undercarriage is very solid with no rust issues, the inner sills and floorboards are really excellent.  The car has all of its original trim, still in very nice shape.  Glass is all in good shape, the windshield is a replacement and is crystal clear.  Tires are quality Firestone radials.  Headlights are rare "Equlux" Marchals. Bumpers show some hazing and a few dings but no pitting or flaking.  Fender welting is in nice throughout, it looks like it was replaced when the car was painted.  Lights and lenses are all excellent with no cracks. The interior of this car has been restored and presents very well.  Seats are in great shape with no splits or scuffs.  Door and rear side panels have also been recovered and are without flaw.  Windlacing is in good shape, doors have new weatherstripping. Dashpad is nice with no cracks.  Everything here works correctly: lights, signals, horn, wiper, fan, etc.  Gauges all work and show good readings.  Indicator lights and dash illumination work.  Even the cigar lighter works, and all 3 ashtrays appear to be unused.  The Motorola radio works but has poor sound quality.  As with most Volvos, the heater in this car puts out some serious heat.  In the summer months you'll find the car ventilates very well thanks to the combination of wing windows and pop out rear side windows.  The 4th picture is one I took (quickly) while driving.  I wanted to show the unique ribbon speedometer, this was actually seen as a safety feature by Volvo; the more red you see the more caution you should exercise. The steering wheel is in good shape with no cracks.  Windows wind smoothly, locks work.  It should be noted that the passenger door needs a lock cylinder, but the door will lock from the inside. New floor mats front and rear in the original style.  Underneath these mats are solid original floors that have been treated with POR-15 to insure no rust in the future.  Back seat has seen little use.  Headliner and parcel shelf are both excellent.  Clean and correct trunk with factory jacking equipment.  Forwardmost area has been repaired and sealed. I can't say enough good things about the way this car runs.  Pull the choke, hit the key and the car is ready to go.  This car pulls strongly, shifts smoothly, and just runs down the road as tight as can be.  The car doesn't smoke and is not a leaker.  The car has a great turning radius and is easy to drive around town, it's equally at home on the freeway.   Surprisingly, the best place for this car is on back country roads, it actually handles really well, this is something most people don't expect.  You can leave it in 3rd gear on twisty roads and run anywhere from 30-50 mph without having to touch the brakes.  The motor has great torque and instant throttle response, 3rd gear provides the right combination of power and engine braking that makes driving fun. Unfortunately I don't have the records for the rebuild but it's obvious from the photos it doesn't have many miles on it since. Here's the pictures that most PV544 sellers don't show.  Being a Pacific Northwest car, the floor pans and sills are original and untouched.  The car has all new brakes, from the master cylinder back.
